Sorry I'm chiming in so late on the last two of your videos - been so damn busy! Grrr Just took some time to watch them both at YouTube and left you comments there.
Sorry you couldn't finish the one and looking forward to the upcoming one.
I've never seen or even heard of any of these games, but it's fun to watch these great looking games of yesteryear and you present your reviews with a fun style and sense of humor.

Thanks Todd...
A friend from lemonamiga.com just gave me working disk images of "Wrath of the Demon". They work great but I moved on and maybe someday I'll finish it.
Thanks for the comments. When I move to the Sega Genesis, maybe there will be some games there that you might know. I'd also like to throw in some 2600 games in the future. Three letters... Y A R S...
I'm glad you like the jokes..
My next review should be out by Sunday night (I hope). So far the intro to the review is finished and I've had a lot of fun putting it together.
Ok... Now I have to go pee... lol... Talk to you soon...

I have a very dumb question, Qix, or anybody else who can answer me...
It's about playing videogames on a _computer_, but with a joystick. Mainly: How do you do it?
What types of joysticks work/fit into the average modern-day computer's joystick slot? Can you use ordinary ones from a game system or do you have to get a specialised kind just for this (you mentioned playing that one Amiga game with a Sega Genesis joystick...)?
If...IF, "theoretically", mind you--I had several different emulators, would it be possible to use, say, a Sega Genesis joystick to play Super Nintendo ROMS if I mapped out the keys for each emulator? Or NES? How 'bout (laugh) Atari? Could I use my Dreamcast joystick, which has more buttons than any of the others and therefore could be the most "flexible"?
I normally use the keyboard, but some games are WAY, _way_ clunky that way and I can barely control the character at all, compared to how fluid I would be with a normal control pad. That's why I want to know about this.
Well, that, and I've been curious for YEARS, but how do you type an entire sentence into Google? "playing computer games with a joystick" isn't exactly something easy to search for...
So...can anyone help me with this? Of course, I'm not sure if my current computer even HAS a joystick port of any kind...

Well, you'd need something like this, and then you can plug a PS2, Gamecube or Dreamcast into your PC via USB (I can't find an adaptor solely for Dreamcast, but I didn't search very hard ). Good choice on Dreamcast controller - just picking one of those up brings back huge floods of memories... (I have two working Dreamcasts, for some reason). Ever played Shenmue? If not... then do. Yeah...I got the console that ended up being the (failed, but brave experiment) _first_ "Next Gen" console, ahead of its time (gee, us TRON fans wouldn't know anything at all about liking something of _that_ nature...) and then never got around to getting any of the others. The Dreamcast is the most recent console I have. However, we have just tons of random cords and joysticks around the place that we don't know what they go to as it is, so bringing another console into this house is not really an option...it's just too crowded, and the storage spaces are all filled with stuff we actually use sometimes--in fact, overflowing into the living spaces.
Otherwise I'd probably get a....probably PS2. They're cheap now, and also play PS1 games. I could finally catch up on Final Fantasies 9, 10, and both Kingdom Hearts, then maybe when I'm done with those go on to FF 12. And other stuff, but as you can see RPGs are the ones I tend to go for first.
Speaking of which, yes I do have Shenmue, but I have never gotten very far on it...always a little confused as to what I'm supposed to do next. However, there is one Dreamcast RPG I cannot reccommend _enough_--and unfortunately, it's the one game of mine that has for no reason whatsoever gone MISSING! (cries)
Skies of Arcadia. It. Freaking. Rocks. It takes place in a world still in the "age of exploration", with that excited, "Ooh, what's around the next bend?!" feeling permeating it, and you get to sail in a (more or less good-guy) pirate ship. Yeah, pirates! Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of loqua and all that.
...in the sky.
Did I mention this world is made up of floating islands (much like Arianus in the "Death Gate Cycle" books, but I seem to be the only person I know who's read those)? Well, it is.
The game is colourful, weird, spooky, creative, GORGEOUS, has cool music, a very engaging and twisty plot, lots of little background details that make the world seem "lived in" and real, and a cheerful attitude that is _missing_ from most later Final Fantasy games. Playing it right after having first encountered FF7 and 8, especially, made Vyse (the main character) seem like a breath of fresh air. He ISN'T an angsty, whiny, emo/slacker loner. He's a cheerful guy with an actual sense of humour whose parents _didn't_ die in some blanked-out accident in his Mysterious, Tragic Past because they are STILL ALIVE! A hero with _parents_? Gasp!
It's one of my favourite games ever; one I can play anytime and not care how far I get into the plot just so I can visit that _world_ again, feel that atmosphere, and...my copy is gone. And I'll bet it's SUPER hard to find another one. RPG's are always the rarest and most expensive games to try and buy from E-Bay or whatever.
Sigh.
I wrote (or started to write) a story based off of it that looks to be easily novel-length by the time it's done, that's how much this world inspires my creative side. But anyway.
I thought I'd need an adaptor...my brother mentioned those. So I suppose I won't be playing any games with a joystick on my computer just _yet_. I need money for many repairs around the house, and so the computer has to go last. The poor thing's been needing new speakers for like, two years now...

Shenmue is my favourite game... ever. The only thing I can fault it on is the American voice acting (eurgh). It's one of only two games that got a 10/10 rating in the Official UK Dreamcast magazine (the other being Soul Calibur). If you can dig it out and give it another play, I seriously recommend it. The sequel is awesome too (and it has the original Japanese voice acting with subtitles), but it was only released in Europe and Japan.
I've never played Skies of Arcadia, but I do remember playing a demo of it that came on the demo disc of the aforementioned magazine. All I can remember is piloting a big, flying ship about for ages not knowing where to go, before I gave up. I'll hook my DC up later and see if I can find the demo disc, and I'll give it another go.

As far as Joy Sticks and controllers go, I use these two. You don't need adapters or anything because they are made for the USB.

That was another great review.
I noticed you were a bit more serious and not wise-cracking as much. Not that there was anything wrong with the wise-cracking, I always got a kick out of that. But I guess this game struck a chord with you more than the other ones, so you treated the review more seriously.
Of course, there was still a little humor in it. Hail to the king, baby . . .
And I always enjoy hearing Rush.

Thanks guys... In fact, even though this is my longest video I haven't really had the chance to spend much time on it. I sort of set dead lines and I was trying too hard with the Bruce Campbell gimmick.
I have such an emotional attachment to Turrican II. I excluded a lot of personal memories because I didn't want to throw off the direction of this review.
I have one more Amiga game to review before I head over the the Sega. I've got a lot of smart-a$$ jokes (lol) saved up and can't wait to use them. :P

I dunno about this game; what I mean is, I just wasn't convinced that you really like Turrican II. And come on, if you don't like it, well then how can you expect me to want to play it?
Seriously though, another great review.
That 'berzerk' mode kind of reminds me of 'Death Blossom' from The Last Starfighter.
I have to say, you do a good job of picking cool music and peppering your reviews with funny gags. You keep it entertaining, in other words, and that's why I like watching your reviews even though I'll probably never get to play the Amiga games you've reviewed so far.
Again, well done, and I look forward to the next one.

Very nice job on your latest review of Turrican II!
I left you a comment and 5-star rating at YouTube.
I would have been totally hooked on this game for hours on end back in the day! Really cool looking game.
You obviously put a lot of work in to these reviews and it shows - they turn out very nice when you're done. I hope you don't mind a little bit of constructive criticism. This particular review seemed to run a bit on the long side. I'm guessing that is because there was so much of that awesome game play you wanted to let the viewers in on, but sometimes less is more effective. Maybe try using shorter game clips or just fewer of them in your next review. Shorter reviews (say 4 minutes or less) might be more appealing to people wanting to check them out on break at work, etc. Get in, hit hard, then get back out leaving them wanting more.
Keep up the good work and I'm sure you'll attract fellow Amiga 500 enthusiasts and maybe even make a few new fans of these older games.

Thanks, man.. I try to throw in music I like. I'm a rocker and I also love classical/theatrical music too. Believe it or not, for me that is the easy part. The tough stuff is trying to get my voice to go along with what is happening in the game. It wouldn't be a problem but my software is really buggy... and I still have a crappy mic...
Thanks again. When I get more time, I'll start a thread about Amiga game emulation. Most of these games are easy to find and some of the game developers are now giving them away. Amiga emulators are a little more tedious but there is a great front end called Lemonade that makes it operate more like MAME.

Thanks for the five star rating. You rock, buddy.
I totally agree about making the videos short. I try to keep them withing 5 mins of viewing, but I know there are going to be a few reviews that I'll do that may take up a whole 10mins in the future. It depends on the game, experimentation, or just whatever is going through my mind at the time.
... but I do agree and thanks for the input.
Thanks again for the complements.
Oh... BTW: the intro music is "Widescreen" by 'Vanessa Mae'. Most of her music is like a cross between classical and techno. |

There never really a dumb question when it comes to things like this. On most of today's computers you can pick up a joystick that can be hooked up to the USB connector that are available on the computers these days. And most of the time The usb plugs can be found in the front and in the back of the computers. The ones in the front of the computer are for quick access for a joystick or thumb drive to plug into the computer. In the beginning when sound cards were coming out. You had sometimes a similar to like a connection in the back of your computer that looked like another 15 pin serial port port but it was for the analog joysticks during that time period. I still have two of those here with me for all 5 of my computers. I hardly use them over here. But they are good to still have around. But with most of today's games where they have force feedback on them. They would use USB since the transfer rates are a lot better than the analog connectors. Like what Qixx has shown in one of his posts. There are so many different kinds of Joysticks around it is mind boggling. I remember seeing one Joystick that costs about $300-400 dollars.(CDN price) But that one in particular was for flight simulators and crafted out of Plastic for the exterior. And the x & y axis pins internally were all made of metal. Instead of the usual plastic all the way through the device.

Well, I finally got around to watching the new review. Looks like an interesting game! Looks more like a game I would enjoy WATCHING somebody _else_ play rather than actually playing, 'cos I know me--I suck at shooters (fairly decent at platformers, including some EVIL parts in more modern ones such as certain levels in "Sonic Adventure 2"...but suck at shooters), but still looks cool in general. And I still say the art style on the shots with the people strongly reminds me of Phantasy Star.
Speaking of which--well, Sega games in general--I probably shouldn't be saying this out loud, but Qix, if you ever want to review a Sega Genesis game but don't have a (working) copy of it, ask me and I will totally PM you a ROM of it. Or tell you where the couple of good, clean, reliable emulation sites are, that I know of. I promise, I won't even mention NAMES out loud here on the board, let alone addresses, but if you ever need help on an oldschool console game, I am totally willing to help you out.
I _wanna_ send you a copy of "Pulseman", for example. That one's freakin' obscure but it's so Tron-like! More people on this board need to know that game.
(I don't know if it's POSSIBLE to "own the original cartridge" on that one. Considering that not only is it old and obscure now, but it was only ever released in Japan...)
As for joysticks on the computer...thanks, Compucore! Yeah, I have a USB port on the front, and was wondering if I could plug anything into that, joystick-wise. What's the average price for a _cheap_ computer-ready joystick nowadays, out of curiosity? I don't have much money.
Also, how many buttons should it have? I would probaby like to err on the side of less 'cos with too many buttons, I always get confused when the game gets difficult and I'm looking at the screen instead of my hands, and start accidentally bashing the wrong ones. I like my joysticks simple.
Sure, I _could_ get something tricked out like a PS2 or other modern-day controller, but I'll mainly be using it to play old SNES and Genesis games, at the most complex. I suppose I could TRY to play Tron 2.0 with it...oh, goddess, just imagine me being even MORE clutzy with that game than I am already... :P
I would prefer it to be more on the small and flat side. I _eventually_ got used to the Dreamcast controller so I guess I could use something with a similar design, but I do my best gaming with something of the same general size as an NES or Genesis control pad--the ones I used most often in my console gaming career.
Anyway...well, I suppose I can just look for myself what's available next time I go to a computer-stuff store. I've been needing new speakers for this thing for a while now anway...might as well look at both categories while I'm there...

I'm doing one last Amiga review... and then a funny recap video...
then.... on to Sega... (I will come back to the Amiga from time to time)...
I really hope that I hit some games that you all know... but most of the SEGA games will be pre-Sonic... Like "Golden Axe"...

Hmmm...I hate to say this, but...
...
Well, there really isn't any polite and delicate way to say it so I'll just say it flat out: NOTHING PAST SONIC'S ERA? WAAAAAHHHH!!
...Ya see, I didn't really become _aware_ of Sega during their mostly-arcade or Master System days. I remember seeing a commercial for the original Phantasy Star...but I assumed it was for a Nintendo game at the time! That, and vaguely playing Golden Axe a couple times, was the only real knowledge I had of their stuff before the days when I first played Sonic 2 in a Toys R Us and eventually bought a Genesis. And I didn't know that those two things (Golden Axe and Phantasy Star) were by the same company, let alone what it was called.
Now, I know this is _classic_ videogame reviews--maybe you're trying to stay more within the '80s?--but, well, much as I like listening to your reviews in general, because of your writing style, I was also always thinking: "Wow, what would this be like when he hits something I KNOW?!" So I was excited about your moving on to Sega because, since I'm a huge fan of a lot of their stuff, I thought, "Neat, now the chance he'll review a game I've actually played, characters I know, situations I've been in, will go up!"
...but, not if it's Master System/arcade era only...
I mean, I didn't expect you do to the Sonic games themselves (although perhaps one of the more obscure ones like "Knuckles' Chaotix" might've been interesting) but practically all the games of Sega's that I'm really into are _past 1991_, so...
Okay, so there's Phantasy Star 1...but that's the one that I've never been able to finish or get very into, even. I keep dying way too often, too early. Phantasy Star II (the favourite of the series but I didn't like it much--too much hard work, too much just grunt-levelling-up work, for a BAD ending!), Phantasy Star III (unpopular but _I_ like it 'cos going for underdogs is just the way I roll) and Phantasy Star IV, one of my favourite games of all TIME, which has _everything_ and is great...all of those are post-Sonic.
(And so is "Pulseman!" but I don't expect you to review that one. It's bloody obscure.)
Do you think you'll ever review a full-out RPG sometime, by the way? I mean, stats, levels, gathering the party, turn-based combat, "Yay we finally got the Insert Vehicle Here!" that kind of thing? I play those a lot myself, so if that genre is included, that ups the chance that you'll review something I know by a little bit...
Anyway. I realise I'm only one person, but...well...if you're going to stay before 1991 with Sega, then...you can stick with Amiga longer if you want, as far as I'm concerned. I mean, I'm still as interested as I always was, because of your humour style and stuff, but I'm not actually _eager_ about Sega reviews the way I used to be. (shrug)
