Actually I always heard it as the sound my computer makes when it's "thinking" real hard. Like when it has to access the harddrive a lot it makes a chittery, mechanical purring sound.

That sort of implied to me that Rinzler was reduced to his basic code or something, leaving out any personality or free-will; as if he was left with only a "stimulus/response" kind of intelligence. Corrupting Tron this is another example of the monster Clu became.

I've also assumed that it was an early version of "rectification" that, between Tron's strong will and defenses, and the newness of the process, left Rinzler messed up as he was.

I read the "purr" as more of a low growl, the kind of sound I associate with large hunting cats.

I suspect the ability to repurpose programs was always one of Clu's functions. As an administrator, the ability to reassign programs to important tasks when necessary - and reprogram them to carry out those functions if needed - would have been invaluable. (Especially since Clu couldn't just create whatever programs he felt he needed - that particular privelege was reserved for Flynn. Now there's something I can see Clu coming to resent...) So "rectifying" the average program was most likely a simple matter for him - the "primitive functions" (as Castor called them) may well have been designed to be repurposed in such a way should the need arise.

Tron would have been a much harder nut to crack. As a system security program, he would have been hardened against subversion by other programs. He also wasn't written by Flynn, so the differences between his base code and that of the other programs on the Grid would likely have posed additional headaches for Clu. Instead of a simple, clean repurposing, Tron's rectification would have ended up being a brute force hack job, with Clu suppressing large chunks of Tron's code and crudely grafting in whatever restraints he could get away adding with while keeping the functionality he considered useful intact. Tron was effectively reduced to Clu's trained attack dog. (Or attack panther. Whatever.)

Flynn explained it at the portal. His creation of CLU was at a time when he thought a perfect system was possible. The ISOs proved his theory wrong. The ISOs represent the chaos theory. What life is, Kevin realized, is organized chaos. Free will and outside influences make a perfect system impossible.

By the way, the actor who played Rinzler was no actor at all. Disney found him on the internet. Those flips and tricks he did were what they wanted. Another Cool Disney move.
