I don't mean to kick the dead horse, but all this discussion about Spin Master reminds me of CLU at the portal. "You promised we would make new figures... Together... You broke your promise"
Like a couple of you said, It sucks what happened, but i'm glad that we got what we did. And i'm not even going to really touch on the Castor Fiasco, it's been said already. But think about it... The primary target is kids, and I don't think too many kids who saw the movie would want "the guy that tricks Sam, than dances while he fights with Quorra", except for the fans, like us around this Sector. If Rinzler, Clu and Sam (ignoring the headsculpts... that's exactly why I didn't refer to Flynn) arn't selling well I'd imagine Castor wouldn't be to high on casual collector's lists. Varying for anyone who just happened to like the character. But it still sucks that he's all over the packaging...
Hey, WheatKing if you're around, Did you happen to get your hands on a Castor? If so would you be able to help us out, not by selling, but help us feel better by posting pics or something? Or would that also get you in trouble with The Mouse?

Uh, I think maybe some of you all don't really collect toys and really don't understand how business works.
The Castor "Fiasco" isn't anything out of the ordinary. Legal-wranglings happen all the time - why do you think it took FOREVER for a decent Ghostbusters line of toys to come out? Because certain actors (cough*Bill Murray*cough) are divas enough to actually CARE about the product that bears their resembelance, and they're big enough stars that they can build that shit into their contracts.
Divergence - take a look at the GI Joe movie line of toys. Both Sienna Miller and the actress who played Scarlett said that they didn't even think their corresponding action figures LOOKED like them. OBVIOUSLY they didn't have any say in the merchandising rights, while other like, say Dennis Quaid and Brenden Fraser DID have a say.
Bottom line - a toy company producing a product has no obligation to the buyer other than to provide a toy. There's no false-advertising going on, every single toy package I see these days has legal disclaimers on them stating that all products may not be available in all areas, and even that products may not end up looking like the photos or colors may vary. Why do they do this? Because of people complaining that Castor didn't come out and therefore their entire collection is ruined.
GIMME A BREAK.
The company doesn't sell toys based on collectors wants or needs, collectors are the MINORITY when it comes to toy lines. Toys are a HUGE business worldwide, and kids who play with toys still make up the majority of the end users. Collectors can only keep toylines going at a certain level, which is why we now have stuff like MattyCollector.com and the HeMan line which is sold exclusively online (except for the few collector's 2 pack exclusives at TRU). If Mattell thought that He-Man would sell better at retail believe me they'd be there, but even the 2-packs with DC figures don't sell very well.
Collectors who a completists are in such the minority I'd say they don't even make up 10% of the purchasers. It's an OCD thing that YOU have, not that the toy company's problem.
Sure they advertise things like "collect them all" but that's really such a meaningless phrase, it's an ad slogan.
In the end Spin Masters doesn't owe you anything. The employees who worked on the Castor figure are probably more bummed about what happened to it than you are.
Where SM made mistakes was not realizing that multiple scales of figures just doesn't work anymore in the toy business. With the price of plastic and tooling these days I'm surprised really that they didn't figure that out sooner. Sure the holographic technology in the big figures was way cool, but the 6 in scale is deader than a doornail at retail, because of the insane price point. Mommy and Daddy are much more likely to buy a kid a single 3 3/4" figure priced between $5-$10 than a 6" figure priced at $15 or more. Increasingly the larger scales are all collector oriented, and as such they don't sell very well. Witness 2009 Playmates Trek, 2009 Playmates Terminator, the 6" Iron Man movie line, the ToyBiz/Hasbro Marvel Legends, I could go on and on. Either those lines failed miserably at retail, or have moved to more of a collector focus (the Iron Man and ML lines).
The bottom line in toy collecting is not that you HAVE to get them all, it's that you get what you want. If you want them all, that's your problem.

So just because it's happened before makes it totally ok? Gotcha. I'll remember that next time a business does something that pisses people off, like race or sex discrimination.
We don't care WHAT the reason was. It was wrong.

And did anyone ever advertise a Peter Venkman movie figure on the packaging of figures that were in stores? No. Did Mattel start releasing their GB line, promising a Venkman figure without knowing if they'd be able to get Murray's approval? No. It's not about if they were or weren't able to get Michael Sheen's likeness and make a toy of him. It's about advertising something that isn't available, and never ended up being available. You don't advertise something because you THINK you'll be able to sell it. That's just bad business and a sure fire way to piss people off when you inevitably can't come through.on line abortion pill misoprostol dose abortion medical abortion pill onlineabortion pills online http://www.kvicksundscupen.se/template/default.aspx?abortion-questions cytotec abortion End of line |

Yup. They advertised the product on the back of the packages with no intention of making it. A company like Hasbro or Mattel would have recalled all product to fix their mistake and issue correcting packaging. Suck Master didn't care. We have the advantage as avid collectors to know what goes on behind the scenes but some average Joe Kid somewhere will probably be frustrated they can't find Castor anywhere not knowing that he was never even available.

Hey guys, I'm taking pre-orders for my custom-made Castor. I haven't made casts of any of the pieces yet, and I haven't made a suitable head yet, but ir should be available on the tail-end of my Blown Out Of Proportion action figure series II collection. Checked my local walmart yesterday. One toy on the shelf: A diecast recognizer.
Everything else was deluxe clus and black guards for $8 in clearance.
TRON 2.0 (PC) name - TRON.dll
I'll play any mode, but I'm best at LC.
PSN - TRON-dll
XBOX Live/Games for Windows Live - TRONdll

LOL I love it! GL with it
I stopped by a local Kmart today to buy general household supplies...and found they added a section in an aisle for Tron toys...in addition to the endcap (which is all they had before!). No idea what's going on with that. Maybe they had lots of stock in the back, and it wouldn't fit on the endcap.
One surprise: they had TWO 3-man lightjets! I was shocked. LOL. Kmart has usually been a disappointment. Wasn't expecting them to have anything new. Then again...everything else that was left was S1...

Exactly. I feel really bad for any kids who look for him without having any idea that he doesn't exist. I still don't understand why he had to be held back for series 3. Why couldn't they have just started putting him into series 2 cases as soon as they resolved whatever the issue was? Isn't Spin Masters supposed to be sending out additional cases of the existing products to coincide with the video release? Why couldn't he have been slipped into those cases? End of line |
