In the FanFic forum there is a story written by David1 called Tron 2.1 that picks up where Tron 2.0 left off. He went a little bananas with it and the story is forty chapters long and gives Lord Of The Rings a run for its money in terms of length :-)
I downloaded the whole thing and have been gradually proofreading it, adding chapter title graphics, and so on. Ultimately, I'd like to make it an epub for my iPad. The thing is a great read and will keep you busy till the movie comes out.
Anyway, he gives a good explanation for all this even if it's not canon. The EN511 used a prototype photonic fiber loop memory invented by Walter Gibbs. The early poor shielding of the loops led to quantum entanglement of the photons that comprised a User's program with the user himself, as they developed code for the machine in close proximity to the loops. That's why programs tend to look like their users. As to what the EN511 really was, I'll leave that to the story...

Also, consider this:
These new outfits are very strongly inspired by Syd Mead's great early concept designs for the character's outfits in the original film.
The new suits are strongly inspired by those early designs.
which is a *awesome* IMO.
Yeah I miss the Jean "Moebius" Giraud's design style, and classic circuit prints;
but IMO these new suits still look pretty sleek and cool, and if one looks carefully, one will see that they do have alot of nice groves and fine detail on them.
These suits have *live*, electro luminesent fiber-optic tech that was incoperated into the costumes.
Digital rotoscoping & compositing more complex trace lines and circuit prints would of been awesome yes,
but also would have been very very difficult, and would of been very time consuming.
It would of taken digital artists at least another 2 yrs or maybe 3 more to do it that way.

Here's the Love Scene with Yori and no helmet. Looks quite lovely but maybe a bit too mature for a Disney movie in 1982

Gawds I really really hope the Bluray HD release will restore that scene to the movie (if possible) but it should be in the Deleted Scene section though.
Yeah that was a little "PG-13" before their was that rating. I like that scene.
It shows that the "Programs" even though are digital beings with set instructions and functions that they still feel strong affection, and possibly even love and are not just digital automatons that don't feel any emotions at all.
Heck even Sark expressed fear and anger...
