This is NUTS!
-->
I swear - it's turning my life upside-down.
Spent THREE hours on this weekend's QuickVid.
Oh well. Hope you dig it.
Random Program: Hey Todd. What did you do Friday night?
TheReelTodd: Oh, I spent ALL my free time and THEN some on a stupid LOW RESOLUTION video that most people will just ignore.
Random Program: Why'd you do that?
TheReelTodd: Oh, no reason. Because I'm just an obsessed VIDEO GEEK who got this "great idea" that ate up THREE hours of my life! You know - the SS Minnow got LOST in as much time!
Why do I do this again?

Thanks.
The statement I made was both a fact (as I'm starting to spend too much time on these) and also a pun for this weekend's QuickVid.
I went all out this time... well, as "all out" as one can go in three hours.
Can you say "80's throwback"?
I can hear my inner-voice telling me "thou shall not attempt to DANCE!" But TOO LATE for that now!

That inner voice of yours doesn't have much luck, does it?
Was it telling you not to dance when you were filming the opening of CRF?

Maybe it should have been.
Actually, at the time I was recoding my stop-motion dance moves, Thursday, February 19th, 2004, the only thought in my mind was "I bet the guys at work get a chuckle out of this silly dance thing when I show it to them in a few days." I had NO idea that I was about to embark on the most complex, difficult to produce video I've ever attempted. It all started out as a simple gag to crack up the guys at work. Then something went wrong and it exploded in to a huge undertaking for me. Was pretty cool when I finally finished though, huh?
As for my weekend video... can't believe I wasted three hours on that. I showed to my brother and Mom at a family gathering earlier. Neither one laughed. Then I showed them the Mr. Tissue-box from yesterday. My brother laughed so hard, that ice cream almost came out of his nose! Oh, he was eating ice cream at the time, ice cream doesn't just form around his nostrils or anything. Then I showed other people my Mr. Tissue Box video from Friday - they all loved it.
I thought the dancing on the ceiling bit was really funny - it made me laugh out loud when I was working on it. I thought the tissue box one was kind of lame. But it goes to show what I know. A 5-minute video (Mr. Tissue Box) was far more entertaining that a three-hour video (Dancing on the Ceiling).
Perhaps I should make a blog entry about that.
Yes, I think I will.

I thought the Ceiling vid was great! I've laughed at them all so far, and I find it cool that with all the struggles you've had with previous video productions, you're still willing to put three hours of effort into a video which is only on your page for the weekend. I didn't see yesterday's to compare it to, though - I think I've missed about 4 now... I don't know what I haven't seen! You might have said something vitally important that will help me save the world from space mutants in 10 years' time... or some sort of secret code that gives people SUPER POWERS!
...or it could just have been you spouting nonsense at your camera.
But either way, I'm still hanging onto the glimmer of hope that you might someday archive them!
I'll just cyber-poke you in the arm until you do.

Thanks - glad you enjoyed this weekend's "Dancing on the Ceiling".
I made a blog entry today, expanding on some thoughts I started writing in my previous post here. In this blog entry, I re-posted Friday's QuickVid for people to compare with this weekend's.
I've got all the QuickVids on my computer still. Part of me wants to make them available in an archive, but I've not made up my mind on that yet. I does please me that there is a little interest (at least with my friends here) in viewing the ones they've missed before and perhaps revisiting the ones they enjoyed the most.
TronFAQ Wrote:I actually thought the dancing on the ceiling video is the best one since New Year's.
The Darth Vader mask one was pretty good, too.
I'd say Santa and New Year's are tied as my favorites. Dancing on the ceiling comes close! |
Thanks, TronFAQ.
Glad you enjoyed. I'm still trying to figure out what people find most entertaining. Often what I find entertaining isn't so much so with others. There is a lot more cross-over in entertainment subject matter with my friends here than there is between me and the world in general. It's funny though, how I can think something is so great only to find that others didn't care for it. And often, what I find to be not so interesting or not so well done, can be very well accepted by others.
Always interesting to find what people dig and why they dig it. What's the magic formula? I try to study that. I also talk about discoveries of that nature in today's blog entry.
Well, I think I'm going to go and wear my Vader mask for a while. I haven't worn it since the Vader QuickVid. Gotta give it some attention. I think I'll walk around with it on, breathing like Vader for a while and see how long it takes to annoy my wife. That's always fun... if a bit dangerous!

TronFAQ Wrote:Well for me, the "cheekiest" quickvids are the ones I find funniest. By cheeky, I mean doing something that's pretty outrageous/silly or a zinger.
Like the Santa vid was just so silly, it was wonderful. And the New Year's was a real zinger . . . it was like "I know you're all feeling queasy out there with a hangover. Now, how about if I do this . . ." (cue wavy lines and distortion).
So it's not so much the "sight gag" stuff, as the cheekiness in the humor, that makes me laugh. Though good gags like the wavy line effect and upside-down dancing, do help make the vids cool. |
Ahh - cool! Thanks for sharing that.
I know the entertainment value of things is not in direct relation to the time invested in making them, but it's kind of hard to figure out what people dig the most.
I know that something really unexpected or very absurd is often funny to people: Warf in the shower, Todd on Santa's lap, Mr. Tissue Box's silly face when I pulled out his "brains".
For you the cheeky-factor is a big part. I knew when I did the Santa one that it would likely be well received. It was both fun and funny while I was doing it and the whole silly concept of me, a grown man, on Santa's lap is pretty funny... well in my book anyway.
I know that some of my QuickVids are better than others. That goes with anything. I'm ok with that too, so long as the "good" ones keep people wanting and checking back for more good ones.
I'll keep toying with stuff in search of that winning formula. The feedback I get is very helpful in that respect. I like being silly - it is actually very therapeutic for me believe it or not. When my silliness can make others smile and laugh along with me, it really brings me joy. Plus, I'd really like to expand my website audience and hope my silly QuickVids can do the trick.

Traahn Wrote:I recently upgraded to IE7 and every time I go to your site now, TheReelTodd, it tells me to "Click to run an ActiveX control." It doesn't load your page until I click the OK button. It actually seems to do this for any website that embeds QuickTime video into it. Do you happen to know how I can stop this annoying message? I'll try a Google search later, but thought you or others might know the quick answer; and wasn't sure if you knew this was happening. Yes, good 'ole IE. |
It's actually very easy to fix. Just use Firefox.
Seriously, I'm sure there is a setting in the Tools, Internet Options, Advanced area, or perhaps the Internet Options, Security, Custom settings area.
I don't use IE 7 so I can't be certain as to what specifically to look for.
Good luck with it.

Darn, I've looked thru the options to no avail. I'm sure a patch will need to be released to bring IE7 to a state it should've been in when launched. I'll just chalk this one up to yet another usability issue introduced with IE7. Not an Opera or Firefox fan for some reason (but apparently not an IE one either ); sorry!

Funny - this same thing came up at work yesterday for different reasons.
I found out that there is no way to make IE7 stop doing this. It all boils down to the fact that Microsoft got sued for some kind of copyright infringement and was forced to pay hundreds of millions of dollars and remove automatic ActiveX functionality from IE. They even released a "patch" for IE6 that disabled that browser as well.
For the fines they paid, they should have just purchased the company that held the rights to this copyright and OWNED the damn copyright as well.
Look it up if you're more curious. Interesting read.
I also leaned that there is code I can add to my pages that will work around IE7's limitations and automatically activate these ActiveX controls... but for now I just don't have the time.
Not too much of a big deal for me yet. I just checked my site stats and only about 7% of my visitors in the last week are using IE7. IE6 is has the largest usage base with about 25% and Netscape 6 just behind at 18% on my site.
In other news, tomorrow's QuickVid (Wednesday's) should be pretty funny. Monday and Tuesday's weren't that great. I mean they were weird, but not really that funny I don't think. But I came up with something that should make y'all laugh Wednesday... or get really grossed out. I'll settle for either reaction.

Haha! Today's QuickVid was great! I even interrupted my brother from mixing his band's album and made him watch it. He loved it too!
Disgusting? Maybe. Hilarious? Hell yeah!
Which is interesting... 'cos I thought people were meant to have matured away from potty humour by age 15...
