Oops - I meant to spell it June bug in my previous post, not Dune bug! After all, it would be pretty hard getting a Dune Buggy into a scanner:

Yes it did... or I think it did. It was found while cleaning out some old office supplies.

Thanks. I'll probably put a reduced version of it in my next blog entry later today. It's missing some legs, but cool to look at. Lots of belly hair - who knew?

Well... it was already e-mailed to co-workers, so it's butt... or thorax, whatever the closest thing to its butt is, has been passed around.

FYI - There was more to the June bug saga than seen in this week's QuickVid. If time allows, I'll make a little more of the madness available in a 1-day QuickVid later this week.

Yeah, it does get quite boring at times. This was a much needed break from work, if only for a few minutes. I'm not sure how many other people have scanned June bugs at 1200 dpi, but it was something new fun for us.

Thanks, MutoidMan! I think the Pitfall video is one of my personal favorites... and took the longest (of any to date) to produce. I wanted it to be longer, but ran out of time before I had to post it, so it got shortened a bit.
Been short on time, so only been able to make phone-cam QuickVids lately, but the ones with silly visuals and special effects are generally my favorite ones.

Just got around to watching your Quick-Vids finally (since I knew the archive would be large on account of me not getting here until late, it took me a while to get to it) and some random comments/questions...
I notice there's a way to "submit a comment" on your site itself, but a lot of the comments I see there seem to be from what people said here on the board. Do you just copy-and-paste and submit those yourself? If so, I should be careful what I say here. :P
Anyway...my favourites are definitely the parody/'80s reference things, but then, they would be. Oh! And another thing I just noticed: Whenever you do an obviously fake special effect, in a way that's laughing at it and at yourself. I'm a MSTie so I'm a bit of an afficianado of B-movie effects...so seeing them get _lampooned_ is always great. Although the ones that talk about just ordinary real-life stuff in a funny way are neat, too.
Some favourites...
--the Darth Vader helmet
--Worf in the shower (So HE'S the one who really killed J.R.!)
--Dancing on the Ceiling _was_ my favourite, until...
--Once in a Lifetime, until it got topped by:
--Pitfall. The way it turns into the Atari-style jungle behind you...the cute retroness of it...and I LOVE the choice of music! That...so...WORKS! I've always loved that song anyway. (I've also always liked the song "Once in a Lifetime" and also "Weird Science", which you didn't play but did reference the movie.) If I had the resources, I'd be tempted to do, like, a video to _the whole song_ of "Tarzan Boy" about the "virtual jungle"...starting with Pitfall and then showing bits of jungle scenes in other videogames through the years. Maybe in chronological order, maybe not. Haven't decided. Knowing me, I'm sure it'd have plenty of stuff from the tropical levels of the Sonic games, though. :P (Sonic swinging on a vine and catching the next one in the Angel Island Zone in "Sonic 3", for example.)
Other notes...
The stuff about the snow/cold temperatures makes me nostalgic...you see, I had snow when I was a little kid, but _only_ when I was a little kid (and only for part of the time--I was born in California). We lived in Iowa from 1981-1986, and even though it was only five years, images of deep snow, building snow forts, throwing snowballs, White Christmases, shovelling the walk and changing from boots into normal shoes when you come indoors are still burned into my mind as The Way Winter is Supposed to Be. Now, mind you, I don't LIKE cold, but around Christmastime this Utah weather starts to kind of let me down. This last year we actually had snow, but only a few inches. Iowa would...snort snow out of their nostrils at us silly desert-types, for thinking a few inches counted as "snow"! :P
Seriously...I had those really fat fluffy snow-pants, that make a funny noise when you walk..and moon-boots. ACTUAL moon-boots, can we talk about retro? They looked funny but were _really warm_ and I'd count on them again in a pinch if I had to move back East where it's colder and wetter, for some reason.
Iowa was...SEVERELY cold. We're talking way down into the negatives in the winter. I still remember "The Bad Winter of '81" where one time (including the wind chill factor) it hit 90 below. NINETY! I am, as Dave Barry might say, totally _not_ making this up.
I got the "Believe it or not" thing with the Virtual Jack Palance, by the way. My brother and I used to watch that show as kids all the time.
Last but not (or is it?) least, the "Asteroids" thing...I also used "Asteroids" as part of a dumb gag in one of my MSTings once. Heh.

You watched ALL of them in one sitting? That's almost an hour's worth of watching.
I'm glad you found them worthy your time.
Pulsewoman Wrote:I notice there's a way to "submit a comment" on your site itself, but a lot of the comments I see there seem to be from what people said here on the board. Do you just copy-and-paste and submit those yourself? |
The "submit comment" link on my video pages are e-mail links. That's about all I can do given my lack of interactive web programming knowledge. These days, most people are reluctant to submit comments via e-mail - I think it's a bit too personal for them or perhaps they fear they'll get spammed (which I do NOT send out unsolicited e-mails to anyone who e-mails me). I tend to harvest comments people leave for me here and a few other web sites. Only a small percentage of the QuickVid comments are actually e-mailed to me via the "submit comment" e-mail link.
Pulsewoman Wrote:Whenever you do an obviously fake special effect, in a way that's laughing at it and at yourself. |
I enjoy playing with cheesy special effects. I also dabble in realistic special effects from time to time (not in my QuickVids), but the cheesy, obvious effects are a great visual gag and a lot of fun. Always loved stuff like that.
Pulsewoman Wrote:Some favourites... |
Excellent choices - glad you enjoyed! The Pitfall video is probably my favorite as well... it was originally meant to be longer, but lack of time forced it to get shortened. I thought the music went well with it too - jungle theme AND 80's wrapped in one! That song always gets stuck in my head too.
It sounds like the Pitfall video has inspired some creative ideas in you as well. I dig your idea and if you have the time and the means to pull it off, you really should go for it. I'd love to see what you come up with.
Pulsewoman Wrote:The stuff about the snow/cold temperatures makes me nostalgic...you see, I had snow when I was a little kid... |
Yeah, snow was fun when I was a kid too. I don't enjoy it so much anymore though. It only gets in the way these days.
Pulsewoman Wrote:Seriously...I had those really fat fluffy snow-pants, that make a funny noise when you walk..and moon-boots. ACTUAL moon-boots, can we talk about retro? |
Check, and CHECK! I had BOTH! I didn't enjoy the thick, noisy snow-pants, but they kept me warm in the snow when sledding and stuff. The moon boots were my favorite though - I LOVED those things! Man, do they even still make those things? They were AWESOME! I still have some vintage moon boots in storage somewhere around. I'll have to dig them out some day.
Pulsewoman Wrote:where one time (including the wind chill factor) it hit 90 below... |
Whoa! And we complain here when the wind-chill make it feel 10 to 20 below! I don't ever recall it getting that cold 'round these parts - even with the wind-chill.
Thanks for checking out my QuickVids, Pulsewoman. I'm glad you enjoyed them! I hope you'll continue to watch.
I rather enjoyed reading your take on them.
And yes, some of your comments may appear as comments in the video pages sooner or later. I hope you don't mind.
Sometimes I wonder why I spend so much time making videos. Some QuickVids don't take long to produce, while others take several hours. Oh, you can use some of my comments. I'm not sure _how_ you're going to edit that mess down eventually (as in, exactly which parts you'll consider relevant/interesting or not), but I look forward to finding out. :P
I didn't watch _all_ of them in one sitting...the last few links didn't work. Then I tried some other links on your site and they didn't work either. I think it was in some kind of maintainence mode or something at the time...I'll try again later.
But yeah. Well, thing is, I knew they would be short, and I was listening to them with my headphones on. Now, I don't _like_ wearing my headphones. (Not a good combination with glasses...) They pinch my ears, and it takes a real long time/a lot of luck to get them to sit in an even remotely comfortable fashion. So rather than keep taking them off and then trying to put them back on comfortably for several sessions, I figured it'd be easier to watch all the videos in one go. (shrug)
I keep getting ideas for music videos about videogames, movies, anime, my favourite Disney cartoons, etc. _all the time_. I just don't know how to do them. My two favourite pipe dreams? One featuring all my favourite animated characters, Western AND anime, to Aqua's "Cartoon Heroes", and one featuring all my favourite video/computer game stuff, but with plenty of footage from Tron!--for Trans-X's "Living on Video". (I mean, come on, the song talks about a "digital world", a "computer fairyland", "travelling on the light beam", etc...)
I actually had other stuff to say about your QuickVids, but my message was long enough already! Like, with Centipede. I remember liking that game, but I was never any good at it--I am impressed with The Reel Wife's Leet Gaming Skillz. :P For some reason, I remember liking _Millipede_ better in the arcades, though nowadays I can't exactly figure out what the difference is between them. Well, other than the DDT things maybe. But I liked both.
Then skip ahead to like 1999...my brother is at a total loss for what to get me for Christmas so he gets me the _Dreamcast_ version of...Centipede! Because he remembers that I liked that one. All those years later. Now _that_ is a thoughtful gift. (It was also a freaking _weird_ one, at least in terms of the 3D updating of the game. The disc also had the original version and THAT is what mostly got played that Christmas morning!)
You wanna know something funny? We used to have the Sega Channel in like 1996 or so, and one time they had a feature of Classic Video Games...including Pong. And my brother, my dad, one of my brother's friends and I ended up having actual fun playing _that_ all afternoon! Laughing, getting into "tournaments" against each other, taking turns to rotate different people in...
Just goes to show that sometimes the classics are called that for a reason.
...anyway. I could reminisce about videogame memories all day. In fact, I think somebody should start a thread about that specific topic, if we don't have one already. Not just TRON arcade games, but any game memories. Doesn't matter if you wax nostalgic about Final Fantasy 10 because you're only 12 or so...if it's a happy/interesting/funny memory _to you_, it counts!
But I better cease operations of my output terminal for now. :P

Are you sure these QuickVids are for entertainment purposes, or are they becoming educational too? That could be a theme. Funny educational QuickVids. |
Education was not really in mind when we scanned the bug - it was more just curiosity. I guess it could be educational though - I mean new things were learned, right? Today's follow-up video isn't so educational... not sure what to call it. Maybe just the impact of it will iron out some additional curiosity people may have had. Or maybe it's just flat out silly.
I've actually pondered making educational productions before. I had some serious ideas churning about a few months ago for kids educational videos, but lack of resources and start-up $$ killed that before it got off the ground. Very hard to get people involved on just the promise of money should it become profitable. Hey - if they were able to make "Barney" (the purple dino) videos successful, I sure had some seriously COOL stuff kids would have loved AND parents would not have hated so much.
Cool - thanks for the link, Sketch!

Uh oh! Jeez, for what I pay for that site each month, it shouldn't have ANY down time. Grrr. Guess there can always be technical difficulties with servers.
Pulsewoman Wrote:I keep getting ideas for music videos about videogames, movies, anime, my favourite Disney cartoons, etc. _all the time_. I just don't know how to do them. |
Maybe just give it a try some day. I learned to do what I do by watching a lot of behind the scenes productions (back before they were just given away with DVD sets) and then applying what I learned via digital video technology as it evolved and became more affordable. When I want to do something new, I have to make it up as I go along - I don't always know how to do what I'm doing until I've done it. If you've got ideas, no sense in keeping them bottled up in you, right? Let them out and see what happens.
Pulsewoman Wrote:I remember liking _Millipede_ better in the arcades, though nowadays I can't exactly figure out what the difference is between them. |
Millipede is basically just Centipede on steroids. I think Millipede is my favorite of the two because it is a lot more wild and chaotic... once you get used to things flying at you from every direction!

Yeah, I saw the Pong one...it cracked me up. It looked _painful_, but it cracked me up. :P
I must apologise for the picture in the link with "Centipede"...that was mine. We have this thread of image-macros going on at the other main messageboard I go to, and I don't have any of those/know where to find them, so I wasn't able to join in. Then I was playing Centipede...onmymameemulator (please don't derezz me!) and that line popped into my head, so I took a screenshot, shrank it down, and added that text. Yes. Forgive me, Users, for I have memed. (hangs head in shame)
What am I saying, I've done freaking "All Your Base" parodies in the past! I don't _have_ any shame left! (snicker)
(Including a Discworld one, if you can believe that. Really.)
I think, with the music video thingies, what's stopping me is complete lack of knowledge about how the technology to do that works. What systems/cards/drivers does it need to run on, how big is it, how slow is it going to run on my not-so-optimized computer, is it free or does it cost and if so how much...all that. I just don't know.
As for the videogame memories thread, I was talking...games in general. Doesn't have to be arcade. Any happy/interesting/funny memories of playing any kind of game, in public or at home, on a computer, arcade machine, hand-held or console, from any era. After all, (a) some of us here are too young to _remember_ the heyday of the arcades, and I don't want to exclude anybody and (b) some of my own personal memories of fun, weird days are from later than that. I have lots of stuff I could tell you about my Nintendo and Genesis days. And even the Dreamcast! One of my _funniest_ game-related memories has to do with playing a Sonic Adventure demo at Toys R Us...
Anyway. Ceasing operations of output terminal (yet again)...

One thing most of us TRON fans have in common is our love for video games - both the classics and more modern greats. I'm sure a general gaming thread would do well as we ALL have our favorites, funny stories to tell, and memorable gaming moments.

Yeah...I was secretly hoping people _here_ would like the Centipede joke-picture. It's cheesy, but it has a classic game reference, so... (Also the other board I originally made it _for_, 'cos they had a whole thread about joke-pictures like that, completely ignored it. Of course, the thread _was_ pretty much dying down by then, but still...)
I also forgot to tell you another thing I thought of during one of your thingies: The one about hemorrhoids should be called "asteroids"...there's this story about when Star Wars was first being made. Don't know how true it is, but I heard it way long ago from my mom, who read it in some official magazine, so it's not like from fan rumours on the 'net or anything.
Anyway. Since he knew _his_ lines wouldn't be used, they were gonna dub over his voice anyway, David Prowse (the guy actually _inside_ the Vader suit, but you knew that) felt free to say ANYthing during filming of his scenes. Apparently on the line "Asteroids do not concern me, Commander--I want them alive!" he changed that to "Hemorrhoids do not concern me..." yada yada and cracked the whole place up. :P
So I instantly thought of that when I saw that particular QuickVid of yours. Heh.
(Little connect-the-geek-stuff fact: He also played Hotblack Desiato's bodyguard in the TV miniseries version of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Which is SO superior to the new movie I don't even acknowledge them as both being from the same source.)
Anyway. I also had a whole segment about Joel and the 'bots playing a bunch of classic Atari 2600 games in one of my MSTings (don't worry, it's only the beginning bit--you don't have to read the whole thing, or to have been following my own backstory from MSTings before this) and just thought maybe you might find it worth a chuckle. :P

There's nothin' like the good old sensation of Atari 2600 gaming! Playing games with a stick and a single, red button. Game graphics that were inferior to a kindergartener's crayon drawings. Graphic blocks so big it was like seeing the Death Star for the first time - "Wow, look at the size of that thing!"
Joel frantically moved his Atari 2600 joystick about in an attempt to keep his pixels from getting shot |
Yeah - that's about it - pixels! You could COUNT them!
But those blocky games were so much fun. Spent many hours in front of a TV as a kid, with my trusty Atari joystick in hand. With all today's beautiful game graphics and rich environments, sometimes all I crave is that old Atari look and feel. How many times can I flip the score in Asteroids? How long can I go at River Raid? What will my score in Pitfall! be before I run out of time? It's just fun to hit those old games. There's magic in those giant pixels!
