In 1982, I was five. My memory is so vivid despite how young I was.
I remember Empire Strikes Back (I think it was being re-played at our small movie theatur) and it was the first StarWars movie I had ever seen. It was so great back then because I remember standing on a milk crate watching my brother play Tempest and just so excited to see the film.
Not so long after that, I really remember a TRON trailer being shown on TV and just knew that I had to see that movie. The feeling I saw when seeing the blue and red glow for the first time was (and still is) un-descripable.
For days upon days I begged my parents to take me to see it. It wasn't going to be released in my area till the following Friday (I think) and my dad had to put-me-in-my-place a few times. Being the youngest in my family, I was picked on by my older brother a lot but this was the first time we both agreed on somthing. We just had to see TRON.
It wasn't until Sunday around 4:PM that I got the chance to see the movie. My older sisters (twins) took me and my brother to see the film (they were 19 at the time).
Compeletly awe struck before the film, I was standing on that same crate watching my big bro play Tempest while a lot of folks were gathering inside the theature. Upcoming movie posters hugged the walls and the smell of the best popcorn on earth filled the air. What an awesome feeling. It's still so clear in my mind.
Right before the previews were shown, we found our seats and drank our sodas. The music from the speakers overhead were litely playing 80's pop music (Duran Duran if I recall correctly) from CILFM... the hottest radio station of that time in our area. The excitement was like no other in my life. Amazing how we react and hold onto things when we look back when we were so young...
I was in shock watching the movie and when we left, I swore that there would be more movies made in this style in the future. I wouldn't have understood as to why there wouldn't be. I couldn't even shut up for days talking about it.
Well... I posted this because my brother and I just got our hands on a Tempest coin-op machine several days ago (Yep Todd... we got it working... Will send pics as soon as I can). I can not think of anything else when I think of Tempest. Being that 5 year old boy, watching my brother play that game in the lobby... Being with my sisters who I loved so much. One of the best days of my life....
...... and the reason as to why I'm here...

That sounds like one of the best days of ones life, I don't know, I wish I could see Tron in theaters. Happy about it, we are all happy that it happened and everyone is interested, and we can be able to talk about with out getting funny looks from bystanders. I am happy everyone is who they are.

I don't know what came over me last night when I posted it, but I guess it's when my brother bought a broken Tempest machine and we were working on it. Got it to work and played a few games on it.... Then it all started coming back to me.
Sometimes it takes a little something at the right time to trigger old memories.

I remember after seeing Tron the first time my friends and I all played "Discs" by throwing pillows at each other and deflecting them, etc etc.
We were having such a great time, but my parents made me leave and go home. I remember that part distinctly!. I wanted to stay and play pillow-discs!!!!

That's a great post, Qix77.
There were so many films I loved growing up in the 70s and 80s - most of them fantasy or sci-fi. It was a good time to be a kid though I guess there are good movies now for kids. But I think there were possibly more pioneering movies then. TRON of course being one of the main pioneers!
I was 7 when Star Wars came out. Wooah! The PRIME audience age probably. And I'm STILL sitting here with droids on my desk! Shortly to be replaced by light cycles though so TRON is currently 'winning'.

I remember my first time, but not too well.
My brother was the one who was into computer graphics then - something that I've nicked from him now as he didn't seem to get into it that much.
In one of his magazines, he'd heard of this breakthrough movie called 'TRON'. So, surprisingly the library had it in stock (on an unrelated note, the Special Features disc knackered up our old DVD player - I accidentally put it in wonky, and it jammed inside - but we didn't tell dad and he thought it had broken, so got a replacement. Ah well. We got the disc out, anyway), and we watched it. I remember Flynn on the Sailor saying he was a User, thinking it was astonishing graphics-wise, and thinking Sark's horns were funny as they were made of card.
My friends can't work out how I think it gets better every time, but I'm sure we all share that view here, don't we?order abortion pill http://unclejohnsprojects.com/template/default.aspx?morning-after-pill-price where to buy abortion pill

I remember my first time quite vividly, as I was about 19 or 20 at the time . Anyway I got my first tase of the Tron world through the game Tron 2.0. After playing through most of the single player campaign, I decided to try multiplayer (as I do with most game I buy). On the online LC grids, I met a group of fans of the film and they told me I had to see it. A quick trip to eBay later, and I was the proud owner of a slightly used wide-screen version of the 20th anneversary DVD. I remember popping it into my DVD player connected to my 20-something inch curved screen TV and my stereo shelf system. As I sat there and watched it, I suddenly realized what they were talking about. To this day I'm still a bit dissappointed that I'm too young to remember it in the theater.where to buy abortion pill ordering abortion pills to be shipped to house buy abortion pill online

I don't remember, really...
all I remember is that my mom and dad rented it for me saying I would like it. I fell in love with it back then (I must've been in like...first grade), and made little paper-doll...things...of the characters that I liked (RAM and TRON...and at that time..I loved Bit.)
I was a lot more creative back then. ==

Wow, Qix77 - that was quite a vivid stroll down memory lane!
I think you remember more about the first time you saw TRON than I do.
I'll nutshell mine.
I had first leaned about TRON during a really cool TV special called "Computers Are People Too". They did a whole bit on an amazing new animation - computer animation! It was so cool to see such imagery that looked... well, so 3D. At the time, I remember thinking it looked more 3D than real life! TRON wouldn't be released until several months later. I believe Computers Are People Too was released in the fall of 1981, with a replaying a while later. Memory could be a bit off.
When TRON finally came out, I was very excited. I knew a guy who had already seen it and he said it was really cool. I remember that it got a 7 out of 10 rating in the paper, and I didn't understand how it wasn't rated a 10.
I finally got to see it, probably a week or two after it was released, when my grandparents too my younger brother and I to good old "Cine 6" theatre (it's gone now).
We sat in the 1st or 2nd row of the theatre, as I recall. Our grandparents sat two rows behind us. I was 11 years old and I knew I was in for the experience of my life!
The film started, the first light cycle sequence played out - the brief sequence where Sark derezzed the guy playing in the arcade. I was so happy to see some of that amazing computer animation so early on in the film. It was truely magical - I really can't explain how incredibly amazing it was for me. I can't even come close to the feeling of excitement it made me feel.
The film played on, I understood everything that was going on. I was already really in to computers at the time and loved the thought of "life" (so to say) in the digital world. I loved the concept of cyber space... long before the term "cyber space" existed. I loved the glowing circuitry on the characters. I loved all the nerdy techno-talk. I loved every minute of the film. I even remember many sequences in the film AS I SAW them that day in the summer of 1982. I clearly remember Alan getting called to Dillinger's office. I remember him getting angry and going to hit the elevator door, only to have it open. I remember Flynn getting smacked in the face with a pillow by Laura. I remember Clu's derezzing, and thinking how cool and creepy that was at the same time. I remember Flynn playing Space Paranoids, and the camera angle of him playing from the game's screen POV. I remember him winning and saying "it's all in zee wrists". I remember Laura saying "shall we dance" jingling her keys...
Ok, I think it's safe to say I remember pretty much everything FROM THE POV of me seeing the film that first time. The film etched in my brain that day. It stayed and has been reinforced with man subsequent viewings of it.
I clearly remember getting bummed out when Flynn was exiting the computer and materializing in the real world. The ride was almost over. Wow - I'm getting choked up over here! I mean, I am really remembering my emotions of how I felt that day!
As the film was ending, I remember how the shot was sped up to show the city fading from day to night. At the time, I misunderstood that scene. I remember thinking it was showing the transition from real world to digital world, in a way that reflected the streets in the real world have their counterparts in the digital world (thinking that the lights and glow were supposed to be the digital world again). But that shot was only a time lapse view of day becoming night. But I remember taking it in that way.
Other memories I have include some not so happy moments.
I remember telling my friends I had seen TRON... only to hear "so what?"
I remember talking to my friends about TRON only to find out they didn't care about it.
I remember thinking... no, I remember KNOWING that TRON would be as big as Star Wars! Instead, TRON was there and gone so very fast.
What happe

Okay, now that I've had a chance to read through your post, TheReelTodd, I will comment a bit more (Sorry about the nutshell thing... it had to be done )
It was very nice hearing your story; thanks for sharing. I enjoyed reading it. It seems Tron is a film that resonates powerfully with some of us for some reason.
Unfortunately, my memory is not as good as yours. I remember my oldest brother took me and my other brother to the movie theater to watch Tron, but (sadly) all I remember is the Dillinger's helicopter flying in. I remember thinking how cool that was. Sadly, though, I think I might've been sick or tired or something, because I think I slept through the movie If I had watched it all, surely I couldn't forget that entire experience like I have??? *sigh* If I could go back to that day, I would definitely watch and absorb it all; committing it all to long-term memory -- for Tron is such a big part of my life now.
Neither of my brothers really care about Tron nowadays. One of them has nothing to do with it and the other (oldest) likes Tron, but doesn't ever watch it or anything. He can relate to it a bit, though.
Even though I don't remember much from the experience of seeing it in the theater, I do remember watching Tron on video at least 2 or 3 times at school within the few years that followed; like during summer school activities, or holiday celebration days, or similar. And those occasions helped to shape Tron as a sentimental/nostalgic film for me, because those were fun, freeing times. When I watch the movie nowadays, I still sometimes get the same feelings inside that I felt long ago when I watched it. (The recognizer searching with its search light is one of the scenes that does this for me almost every time.) And whenever I get these feelings, I try not to interfere with them. I do all I can to bathe in those emotions (because they are so brief and only last a few seconds) and not over-analyze or think too much; for fear that I will suck myself out of the moment, forget what the feeling is like and never be able to get back when I watch the movie again. (Weird, I know...)

I know what you mean; thanks again for sharing. I can get kinda choked up a little, too, when I have the flashback moments that I described above.
TheReelTodd wrote: As the film was ending, I remember how the shot was sped up to show the city fading from day to night. |
I don't think I consciously remember this scene very much from long ago, but this scene can easily choke me up today if I let it. The music and the artistry of it puts me in a reflective mood where I wish I could go back to that time in 1982 -- if only for a few moments -- where life was so much easier and more innocent. Life passes us by so quickly now. I think as we get older, we all sometimes wish for it to somehow slow down a little.
This film was the greatest film ever... why no respect? |
It really was. Well, at least I liked it, too I think it really helps if you were into arcades and computers back then. I think some people maybe just get sensory-overload with all the visuals and don't appreciate video game stories. Maybe those people need fewer visuals, fewer pauses in dialogue, less 'techy' stuff; I don't know. Fortunately, I've been surrounded by others in my life around me who also enjoy Tron. They don't obsess about it as much as me, but at least they understand Tron and understand where I'm coming from.

The odd thing about it is that I didn't understand the movie as well as others. I didn't even pay that close attention to the Real-World parts... Being 5... it didn't matter because all I cared about was the visual style... It was soooo amazing... I didn't get the chance to see it again till renting VCRs was the big thing a few years later. That was when I pretty much stuidyed the film.
So amazing how the elements all come together.
I remember the first time I seen:
Donky Kong: at a local super market one night.
Gyruss: at Showbiz Pizza in KY, before it became Chucky Cheeze.
Qix: at a local arcade in town that changed my life much like Tron did.
Crazy Climber: near a Taco Bell somewhere in Texas in 1980 (I only have a few images of that moment.. Pretty Vague)
There is so much I can remember. Smells, atmostphere, music, etc... I hold on to my childhood as if it was life itself.... and that was the 80's... The best decade ever.... Having a big bro helped too... What he was into was what I was into... till I got a little older... then I found my own groove.
Tempest: As I said before, at the movies standing on a milk crate watching my brother play... I played it tonight thinking about this thread... So many things in my heart... so many memories.
Oh... BTW, Todd... I beat my brothers hi score tonight and when I entered a name I usually put "JPC" (Jody Paul Craig) or "QIX"..... But tonight I put "TRT" (The Reel Todd)...

My first time watching tron was far different from all of yours. No theatre, no 80's, no arcade games, no lights, no commercials for tron. nothing original. I didn't matter, the experience is the experience with or without all that stuff.
My mom told me about Tron in late 2004 after I got interested in space invaders. My imagination soared wild with the space invaders, through drawing T-shirt, (didn't get a cabinet, wanting one) etc. My mom said that it reminded her of Tron, which she loved.
We went and rented it at blockbuster the day after. We went into the kitchen where we had our only VCR, stuck it in and watched it for the few hours that it was. We popped 4 bags of popcorn, ate all of it, into the movie and all. Wow. Best movie ever, hands down, better than space invaders.
my brother watched it with me the second time, he gave it a 3 outa 10. Same with dad.
I remember thinking, WHAT?! 3?! I wondered if he was having mental trauma or something.
Tron led me through alot of painful steps in life, disrespect, no friends, depression, some weren't, I got better grades, my interests in everything increased, life was good for a while.
Now my life is purely in my mind. Kinda. All my joy is in my work. Well I did end up here, where I can share my work with people that understand, that's good.abortion pills online abortion pill online purchase cytotec abortion

Yeah, I deserved that! Funny thing, when I wrote "nutshell", I was thinking "this is going to be one GIANT nutshell!"
I also left out a ton of stuff, because I was trying to keep it in a nutshell.
I realized that I mostly remarked on my memories of the real world scenes. I left out completely the chills I got as the main light cycle sequence was taking place. That whole sequence totally blew me away. I remember thinking how amazing it was how Flynn was able to navigate through "the maze". It was such an amazing point in the film for me.
And the recognizers chasing after the light cycles after their illegal exit from the game grid. Oh, how the visuals of that left such an impression on me - RIGHT from that first ever time seeing it! I can actually remember all of these sequences from THAT DAY in the theatre in 1982.
I also left out how as I was there LOVING every micro cycle of the film, I looked back to find that my grandfather had fallen asleep! Grandpa was SLEEPING during the greatest film ever! What? Oh well. Funny thing, to this day, he remembers not liking that film. He's almost 90 and still kicking (God bless him).
I bought my Tomytronic TRON game not long after seeing the film too. I got to play light cycles like in the film, and it was just AMAZING! The graphics were limited on the handheld game, but they were good enough to give me a thrill with the light cycles. I loved how the screen scrolled infinitely. I was really good at that game back in the day. I still have it AND still play it from time to time. Of course, it had a cameo in On the Cutting Room Floor of Oblivion
I enjoyed the disc game and MCP game in there too, but my biggest thrill was always the light cycle sequence in the game... just as in the film.
Thanks for sharing your take on things too, Traahn. Nothing like geeking out among your fellow TRON fans & friends, huh? I can't believe you fell asleep during the film! My grandpa, I can understand. But you? Shame, shame. Just playing.

Haaaaaaaaa!
Thanks, man!
No make sure my "TRT" remains on the top ten list for a while, ok? You do keep the game plugged in, right? Can't loose the top ten listing. That's half the fun of playing - ranking a score up with the other top ten! Something that I was rarely able to accomplish back in the day. Always tried though.
All those old 80's games. That also is what made TRON so awesome. The whole video look of everything played right in to the look of TRON.
I loved the concept of TRON being like in the game itself. I don't think they could do that these days. Games don't look very "video" anymore - they're all about looking as realistic as possible. But TRON played upon that whole look and feel with perfection, if you ask me. I loved when the tanks shot their blasts, and the blasts looked like video game blasts. Man, EVERYTHING about that film was just awesome!

I think it's cool that younger folks are still digging TRON. To me, it is a sign of greatness. I mean that.
Look at how all of us TRON fans have gathered here and enjoy each others company so much. No flaming. No trolls. No heated arguments over petty things at all. We're all friends, young and old. TRON brought us together. And we all share other similar interests.

Well, TRT, I don't know for a fact that I did. That's my only logical explanation as to why I don't consciously remember anything (except the helicopter) from the movie that first time I saw it. It could also be that my memory just sucks and I didn't really understand it or care for it the first time I saw it and so blocked it out? I have no clu.
