Robosapien V2

on Wednesday, April, 19, 2006 7:13 PM
Just look at it. It's so cool looking!

This guy is almost TWO feet tall!

There was talk about this beautiful robot last year in this thread.

For some reason, it popped back in my head the other day, so I looked it up on the internet and started reading more about it. It sounded VERY cool with all the neat tricks it was capable of, especially something very interesting called free roam mode - where the robot basically just wanders around and interacts with its environment on its own! It recognizes humans (yes, it can actually see to some extent), can detect primary colors, has an impressive vocabulary (for something of this price range), and the list goes on.

There were several videos available also, from proud owners of this robotic wonder. The videos showcase both how very cool it is, and also how limited it is. It is clear that Robosapien is more toy than actual robot, but it's still very cool and I WANT ONE!

Yesterday, I asked my wife to pick one up for me because she gets out of work much earlier than I do. I told her the stores to check - Target and Toys-R-Us. Neither one of them had it. Bummer.

No big deal. I got home after work and looked up a few other stores that carry it like Circuit City, Radio Shack, and Best Buy (there were others, but these are all in close proximity to me).

Get this, there were literally only about FOUR of these elisive robots between all the stores I called (I called a few of each). And NONE of them had the cooler looking metallic/gray colored one! The white one is ok, but the metalic one looks so much cooler to me!

If I'm going to spend $200.00 on a toy robot, I want the color I want. I don't want to settle for white - blah.

But there are no metallic colored Robosapien V2's to be found in this area. Grrrr.

Dare I order one to be shipped to me?

I'm considering it... I mean I really want one!

But these things are very fragile. Because they're built "cost effectively" to make them affordable, they're not exactly very durable. If this thing falls more than a few inches, it will break. We all know how packages get tossed, kicked, dropped, etc. along the way. Of course, the same happens when they get shipped to retailers, so who knows. But it is a lot easier to return a damaged robot to a retailer than it is to repackage and ship it back.

What to do... what to do.

Well, if you're curious about this thing, just hit google.com and type in "robosapien v2"... here, allow me:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=robosapien+v2
Tons of reviews and several web sites of fans devoted JUST to this little fella, and the other robots of Wow Wee. He's got quite a following out there!

And there is talk of Robosapien V3... which is already in development and rumored to be about THREE feet tall! That's almost a meter to you metric folks out there. It is also rumored that he will be completely voice controlled and able to "help out around the house". With what exactly? Who knows? But if they do a good job with it and it is somewhat affordable, I'll end up with one of those guys too! It doesn't come out until 2007 at the earliest though.

Man - look at the times we live in! It's FINALLY starting to happen! Robots - REAL robots in our homes!

You know - sometimes I just LOVE being a nerd!

As Flynn said, 'all this technology scares me'!

Still, if it was late at night, and this thing came coming after you, very slowly, with its lights on, making a robotic whirring noise, with you unable to stop it, wouldn't you be scared?

Not when you have your trusty screwdriver! DIE! DIE! STAB! STAB! TAKE OUT BATTERIES! MWUHAHAHAAA!

...

OK, did I get a little carried away there?

But anyway, although the prospect of robots in the house to me is a little scary, I think it should still be quite cool having these things around.

Scared?

I'd be too excited to be scared!

I'd be like "Wow! Look at the little evil robot come to get me! COOL!"

I love technology! Robots are cool and I'd be happy to be attacked by one!

I've seen Star Trek. I know how to shut down a robot.

LOGIC!

All you have to do is confuse it. Tell it "Everything I say is a lie. I just lied."

Then the robot would start saying "If everything you say is a lie, than when you lied, you told the truth... but you can't tell the truth because everything you say is a lie..." and it would become confused and break down. That's how they did it on Star Trek.

Seriously, if I got one of these, I was planning on making a short production video about how the little toy robot is really much more than a toy. But given that I'm not sure if I'll get one of these and I have almost no room left on my computer's drives (for video), that will probably be just another great video idea that never gets further than thought.

But, I still want one. They're cool and look like fun.

I've heard of people who can fart on command. But I think the robot can also do that too.

Anyways, wow! Does this new version look so much like Asimo! It's almost like we're seeing his long lost brother here!

I bought one Todd, it's pretty interesting. I haven't set the program moves into it yet, but it can be entertaining, it dances, makes programed moves, and interacts with the roboraptor, robosapien v1, and robopet. it's sorta crude to mess with after a day or so, if it had a keyboard input, and voice programs, I'd say it's worth the $250 I paid, but alas. The moves alone may sell the product, which is really cool to do, but just think little green army men, and is one really good enough? I think mine is lonely, and not intuitive enough for me... I want it to say certain explitives, as it can be put into security mode, LOL, so it is capable of some cool stuff w/o the explitives, but I dont really know how much you could do with security mode... so there's the ups and downs.

I've seen Star Trek. I know how to shut down a robot.

Hopefully it follows Asimov's three laws of Robotics:

1.A robot may not injure a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human to come to harm.

2.A robot must obey orders given to him by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.

3.A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

If not, you're screwed.

Ahh - cats are awesome!

They're low maintenance, make great pets, and their preditory tendencies can be a lot of fun.

I had a cat many years ago. I remember sometimes I'd walk around a corner in the house, just to have the cat come running out of nowhere, jump up at me as if I were its prey, and then high-tail it back out of the room as if to realize I am about 20 times his size - all in just a quick moment or two. I always wondered what caused that behavior - I mean, what exactly was he thinking?. It always scared the hell out of me for that brief moment, and then made me laugh!

Ok, I broke down and bought one yesterday. It turns out that the cooler silver/metalic color can only be purchases through The Sharper Image stores. Aparently, they have an exclusive agreement with Wow Wee so that only they can sell that color. Which is fine by me - at least I got the color I wanted.

It takes 6 D size and 7 AAA size batteries. I also got them there - figured why not - all in one store, right?

Now, it takes a LONG time to unpackage this guy. Me and the wife both worked on freeing him together. There are a zillion restraints securing him to the package. I needed pliers, wire cutters, and a lot of patience.

Once he was finally free of the packaging (about a half hour later), I popped in the batteries and turned him on.

He started talking immediately: "Self diagnostic initiated. I am Wow Wee Robotics RSV2."

He does a little stretch and starts looking around. I initiated the dance routine... it was kind of cool, but he was really sluggish for some reason and didn't finish the routine. I then initiated the range of motion sequence where he shows off his basic range of motions. One of the motions is to lay down and then get back up off the floor. He failed to get back up. On to walking... he could barely walk.

I suspected crappy batteries and went out to buy some Duracells. Yep - it was the batteries. For all the cool stuff The Sharper Image has to offer - DO NOT buy their CRAPPY batteries! $20.00 wasted on weak alkalines.

I played with the robot for a while - it's both cool and eerie how he tracks things and looks around at you when you pass him by. Yep - he usually sees you when you walk by. You can make a fist near his head and he'll track it with his head and eyes. Pretty cool.

Working his remote controller is a bit difficult though. They've got it set up mirror (left/right) image to where you want to go. It really throws me off when trying to maneuver him around.
""
Also, his robotic AI is far less impressive than I expected. When I set him on "free roam mode", he wanders around for a while until he gets too close to an object, then he turns around almost a full 360 degrees, and then sees the same obstruction after starting to move forward, and so turns another almost 360 degrees, and so on. I thought his programming would be a little smarter than that. Not impressive at all. For some reason, he'll get stuck starring at my stove or refriderator. He starts "tracking" them over and over and says he's getting "dizzy" after a while. I'm not sure what he's tracking, but some not too slick programming and shoddy visual sensors in my opinion.

He can still do some cool things, has an impressive vocabulary and has some neat tricks though. For a $50.00 robot, he's really pretty cool... unfortunately he costs 4 times that much. Not really worth that much to me. That was a lot of $$ for me to drop in to something like this and it falls far short of what I expected.

If you're considering getting one of these things, be sure you have a good sized disposable income. If you're in my income range (not much disposal income), you'll probably feel very shorted for the money invested. I seriously considered returning RSV2 to the store. But after giving it some thought, I think I may keep him afterall. He falls short of the high praise other owners give him on the internet, he really can't do a whole lot on his own, and he's somewhat difficult to control remotely, but he does have a certain charm and I love robots.

I took a quick video of his bowling skills (or lack there of). There are several bowling videos of RSV2 available out there, but I thought I'd make my own anyway.

First off, let me say it took several hours to finally get him to recognize his ball. I had to find JUST the right spot in the house with just the right lighting conditions for his color camera to work on the ball. He recognizes his ball by seeing green. Most of the time, he jus

Hey Todd. I got online and found out that there is a large amount of hacks for little guy. Some of them improves his AI and others are better replacements for his tracking and sight. The only problem is that if you open him up, the warnty expires... but if you are tech savy, you might want to check them out... Here is a link I found.

Thanks for the link, Qix77. Actually, I was reading up about all the mods people were performing on their robots before I even bought mine. Many of the videos I saw (that helped convince me to buy one) were from this site. There are actually several sites devoted to fans and modders of these little guys. It was the devotion and love people have for them that also helped convince me to get one.

I was playing with mine a little more yesterday and a while ago today. Much to learn about it... or him... or whatever I should call the thing.

Still, I am disappointed in its level of autonomy. I really thought it would have a greater level of awareness when in free roam mode. I thought it would react more intelligently when it came across an obstruction (and not just keep turing almost all the way in a 360 after backing up each time). His programming leaves much to be desired in that respect. For one thing - he can lay down on his back and get back up on his feet again. But if he falls on his back, he just lays there until you pick him up. What's up with that? Why give him the ability to lay down and get up if he cannot get up on his own after falling down in free roam mode? Stupid! Of course, if he falls on his face, he just says "user error" and you have to pick him back up. I was very excited before getting him, thinking he could pick himself back up when he fell down. Boy was I mistaken!

Still, there is so much potential in this thing it makes me sick. It is a toy, but it could be so much more. There are some neat features built in to it already - some even useful, like "guard mode". You can basically turn him in to an alarm that goes off when people get near him. Doesn't work well in low light, but still neat and somewhat useful.

I wish there were some way to pick apart his code and reprogram him to be a little more intelligent. I wish I could write scripts for him and utilize his visual and audio sensors. I bet I could program him to react a lot more intelligently than his current "free roam" mode. But there is no way to hook up the computer to him and do so.

I know people are modding this guy left and right. I've read through several very in-depth Robosapien modding how-to's out there. They come complete with photos and detailed instructions. But I'm no good with this kind of thin. I'm not comfortable taking it apart, soldering things to its boards and chips, and then putting it back together. I'd kill it very quickly, I'm sure. Besides, I paid $30.00 extra for a 3-year extended full replace warranty. I figured if I'm dropping $200.00 in this thing, I may as well make sure it lasts for a few years just in case.

I really wish they could have included a computer port to hook him up and program him - WITHOUT having to modify him to do so. I'm sure Robosapien V3 will have a few more options like this built in.

Oh well. RSV2 is still neat and I'm going to learn how to get him to do what I want him to do. For the money I spent - this thing is getting tamed, dammit!

I think that is a smart move. I might get one this summer and even though I'm ok with a sodlering iron, I probably would not open him in at least a year. $200 is a lot of money...

By the way... I downloaded your video and loved it. It's really funny and yet amazing. The only concern I have is how he walks. In the video he looks like he is waddeling instead of walking... but even at that, it's still impressive. Low maintenance my foot! Cats are a lot like fuzzy little kids; the more time you spend with them as they were kittens, the more they want to hang around with you as adults and still keep certain kitten-ish behaviors. That's the experiance I had with my two cats. I spent a lot of time with them as they were kittens and now I can't leave them alone for longer than 6 hours or I get the baby-cat attack or they'll spontaiously jump on to my shoulders and curl up there like a fuzzy little scarf and so forth. So it really depends on how you raise your cat that makes the difference.
