I've seen that graphic on the net many times. Looks awsome. So it's like a theatrical vinel of War of the Worlds. Is it just music or is it similar to the 1938 broadcast?

It stands very much alone.
It's sort of a musical, but not as much or as annoyingly as musical films from the 40's. The sound of the music spans from theatrical orchestra all the way to Rush-ish and ELO-ish rock. Some parts are mood-setting themes and others are straight drama dialouge and everything inbetween.
I describe it as a dark, musical theater of the mind. Great for headphones in a dark room.
I've been checking Half-Price books now and then for a copy on CD. All I have left is a tape duplicate of the LP I used to have and miss quite a bit. I loved listening to it as a kid while wasting the day drawing.
As far as the 30's radio "drama" is concerned, it wasn't much like the book at all, unlike the LP I'm telling you about.. It was a media spoof like something Andy Kauffman would have tried to pull off. It took the form of appearing to be a radio broadcast being "broken into with newsbriefs". Listening to a broadcast of an orchestra just playing music and then you'd suddenly hear another announcer "break in" to update the audience on how the world was being attacked. Many people believed it, but they had to be dolts. No other station would have had any news on it, and the entire scope of Earth's destruction, from launch on Mars to every city ablaze, fit within an hour's program. The form of the attack and the aliens were based on the ones in the book, but that (and the title) is where any similarity to it ends.
All in all, this LP version, despite being musical, is the closest we've had to the original book compared to the radio drama and the old film.

WHY do they want to ruin such a wonderful book with a movie that has a horrible actor like Tom Cruise?! WHY?! That's the only thing turning me off of the whole thing.
Now, there is an independent film that is comming out at the same time (about) that seems to be promising.... I might not see that one either untill someone tells me that they did NOT ruin the story or anything, or didn't change the entire story and say that it was based on the book.
Somehow I know that the Stephen Speilberg one will change and/or destroy the whole story.
Sory for my little rant. I'm just an H.G Wells fan...

I kind gathered that when seeing cars blow up.
Also, it's either the 19th century or the 1800's, not the 18th century.
I know the feeling Tori.

Responding to a post of the last page.
Sketch, I did not want to read a spoiler before I saw the movie, and I did not come into this thread expecting to a spoiler to be posted. Could you please post a spoiler warning before posting spoilers (and I define spoilers as any information about the movie's plot you can't get from official promotional material) for the benefit of people like me?

I didn't think anything mentioned in here wasn't already explosively apparent in the movie trailers and TV spots, and sustaining that sort of state of non-spoilage is not only a bit unrealistic to attain, but if spoilers were THAT concerning to you, the caution before even entering a movie thread should have been on your discression.
I think.

No, it's alright. I had just read the first sentence when I realized it was a spoiler. Thanks for putting up the warning at the beginning of the thread.

I believe Jeff Wayne's Musical version of War of the Worlds has been rereleased to coincide with the new film. It appears to be a standard wide release, so I'll be looking for it in regular music stores. I believe it was slated for July 5th.
However, if any of you get curious, beware there is an abridged version out there too that focuses on the music and apparently trims out the bulk of the drama. *hisssssss* Don't get THAT one.
Just so you know.

OOOOOOH-LLAAAAAAAAAA!!!
Yes, I know the musical version of WOTW!
My thoughts on Spielberg's film?
FRICKIN' INTENSE!!!!
This film freaked me out on so many levels! Very well done and tied with Batman Begins for my favorite film of the year!

I just saw War of the Worlds over the holiday weekend.
I really liked it, with one exception. The little girl, Dakota Fanning's character, is just way too annoying for me. The whole "little kids who are way smarter than adults" schtick has worn out.
Otherwise, I thought it presented an alien invasion in a very believable, scary, and often disturbing and creepy way.
I definitely recommend it!
SPOILERS BELOW:
For me it was especially fun watching it because they filmed parts of it in NJ, where I live.
It was funny how Tom Cruise turned the corner of his block at the very southern tip of Bayonne to go check out what happened and magically appeared across the river on an intersection in Newark.
The destruction of the Bayonne Bridge (the bridge Tom Cruise's character lives next to) was crazy to see.
I thought the walkers were awesome and definitely scary.
Their weapons were just so freakin' evil!!!
Man, when I saw people just instantly cook and explode in a puff of grey powder, leaving only their now-empty clothes floating through the air, I knew Spielberg got it right. That's even more diabolical than the way people disintegrated in the George Pal movie.
The HMMWV's (Humvee's or Hummer's) full of soldiers going over a hill and coming back over with no one inside and on fire was scary, no doubt about it. But what really got me was the Amtrak Acela train traversing the railroad crossing at high speed and completely on fire! Man, that creeped me out!
I really liked how the U.S. Military was portrayed. They went in and did their jobs as best they could against an incredibly powerful alien enemy. No arguing amoungst themselves, no deserting, just trying to kick alien ass and protect civilians. Nice!
I thought the aliens themselves were very well-designed. They were like minature versions of their walkers.
All in all, a very cool version of War of the Worlds. |

I can't wait to see it!!!
It looks like such a great movie!!!!
Here's a spoiler for Master:
In 1940, War of the Worlds was put on radio as a news broadcast. I caused Nation wide panic! Friends calling friends for help, commiting suicide, everything. |
It's kinda funny when you think about it...

Yes, I've heard about the radio program.
It's kind of sad how many people believed it right off. o_O I've only seen clips from the old movie.
But I'm not sure about seeing the movie because I don't like Tom Cruise that much. (He seems out of control in public whereas he works hard in movies...) Granted, I can separate the persona from the movie.
I guess I could always go see it with my sister when it's open captioned. @_@

I hate to revert back to Jeff Wayne's WOTW, but I read on it's official site that they're producing a CGI film based on THAT production! They even have some production tests posted! It's slated for release in 2008! It looks ever so promising, even sticking to the Victorian England setting.

That does look cool! It'll be interesting to hear that soundtrack in a movie theater!
But, I can't hate on what Spielberg made. That film was virtually the same story only updated for our post-9/11 time.
It had the most amazing visual effects I've just about ever seen, a great cast, compelling story and some of the most disturbing imagery ever imagined.
A powerhouse of a film from Mr. Spielberg, in my humble opinion!order abortion pill abortion pill buy online where to buy abortion pill

Ok,
now I feel bad about ranting about the horribleness that I thought the movie would turn out to be. That movie was MUCH BETTER THAN EXPECTED!
YAY, DESTRUCTION!!!!
I still think that they should've followed the book more, like I was told it would do.
