Since much of TRON Legacy's marketing has relied on viral campaigning, I think the Black Eyed Peas pickup is awesome. Between Daft Punk doing the soundtrack and things like the Black Eyed Peas lightcycle appearance, Disney is clearly trying to market the film far beyond its original cult following. Which is all good in my book. Bring in the kids! Bring in all the folks who went to see Avatar for the amazing visuals. Hell, bring in EVERYBODY! That cannot be said for BEP stealing the lightcycle for their own use at their concerts.....Concerts that people paid money to go to. Money that should be rightfully shared with Disney now, for shoplifting the lightcycle! |
The problem is they aren't generating a single dime with the lightcycle...in fact, it probably cost them a ton of money to buy/build. People aren't going to the concert to see the lightcycle, they're going for BEP and the music they made.
I've worked in film & A/V production for a decade and I can spot infringement when I see it. This ain't it.
Besides, how do you know they didn't get the cycle from Disney themselves? All we've seen is a couple of cell-phone videos on YouTube. We don't know the context. So everyone here who is condemning the band is jumping to some massive conclusions.

They may be going to a BEP concert but you are completely overlooking my point. It's not that people are somehow being duped into seeing BEP in place of Tron or any some such, the fact is that BEP is benefitting from the use of the lightcycle and I have a good suspicion that it is not sanctioned by Disney because if it were I would think Disney would put out in a press release that they were allowing said band the use of TRON Legacy imagery for their own agrandizement. And to be honest you don't really know that they aren't generating a money or publicity for themselves with the use of the Lightcycle. That is your speculation based on your bias for BEP. THe fact that they have it in there and there is no press from Disney saying they support it leads one to believe that it is not a kosher business deal. As for Disney lawyers always coming down on them, that is falacious. Since the management of Disney has changed their attitude has softened a little over the years as they are not anywhere near as lititigous as they were under Eisner. Everyone has seen the change in that direction. This could have easily been something they are not interested in persuing because they figure it will run its course. That is their decision, I can live with that. But I still support that BEP are talentless theives that have no clear direction without taking from others and I stand on that. If you think that theft of ones work is okay as it could mean a scant percentage of publiciy for them then that is your belief. Hope you don't create anything too popular that could be co-opted for others gain. And as for a dress made of dead kermits....A one and only item is worth more than a postering fanboy riding on an icon he and his bandmates didn't even rightly get license for. Uh, no, they aren't. If the prop isn't generating extra money, and actually cost them money to have made, then it isn't an asset, it's a liability.

Did Disney ever send out a press release about Tron being used by The Strokes? Family Guy? South Park? American Dad?
That is your speculation based on your bias for BEP. |
OK, now you're really making leaps of logic. I don't have any bias toward them...in fact, if anything, I'm biased AGAINST them. Personally, their music makes me want to throw things at my TV and/or radio to make the pain go away. I just know significantly more about the entertainment and production industries than you do. You, on the other hand, are spazzing out as if you created the property and it belongs to you. Guess what? IT DOESN'T. And instead of being content with the fact that a property you supposedly love is getting the mainstream attention it always deserved, you dig deep for a reason -- a completely unfounded reason -- to bitch.
THe fact that they have it in there and there is no press from Disney saying they support it leads one to believe that it is not a kosher business deal. |
Or -- more likely -- they just don't give a crap, because they realize it's an homage to the movie's production design and will likely get more publicity for the movie.
A one and only item is worth more than a postering fanboy riding on an icon he and his bandmates didn't even rightly get license for. |
OK, of all the message boards you could post this on, you post it here. A site full of people who make their own costumes, props, figures, posters, art, fanfic & God only knows what else. And they're using those creations to get recognition for their creative skills and modeling/crafting ability. And has anyone in this forum paid for any kind of licensing fee for the use of Tron, its characters, its vehicles, its costumes? So should Disney shut us down then?
Fun fact, Iso: Tron does not belong to you, or any other one person. It was created by Steve Lisberger, it's owned by Disney, but it belongs to the entire world. And just because YOU don't like how someone pays tribute to it doesn't mean they're wrong.

FusionAddict, your dead on.
It doesn't surprise me that BEP would do this. They have seemed to have incorporated a futuristic techie design for the group's image in the latest album. A homage to Tron Legacy seems natural. None of the people who went to that concert went for the light cycle. They went to watch BEP. It was clearly a homage.
As far as past references to Tron being acceptable, I think it's because fans were excited to see anything Tron related. It gave hope that maybe the franchise wasn't dead. But now, for get it! Die hard Tron Legacy fans only want Disney, who neglected the franchise for so many years, to do anything Tron related. Now that Tron Legacy looks to be a big hit, certain fans feel Tron no longer needs the support of unlicensed tributes. That's just ridiculous. It's those tributes that kept Tron alive, and I bet Disney feels the same. But only time will tell.
I personally, liked the older homages as they were modeled after the original Tron and 2.0.
As far as Lady Gaga, since she is trying to be a sex symbol, then the comments about her unattractiveness comes with the territory. You can't have your cake and eat it too. If your trying to seduce someone and it's not working, they're going to let you know and why. I have no sympathy for her.
