Posts: 411 | Disney's focus on kids/young adults for Tron's future on Tuesday, August, 09, 2011 2:05 AM
This past weekend, we went to a birthday party for two of my wife's neices. We were testing out their new 3D tv and 3D Blu-Ray player. First we watched the original Tron Light Cycle scene in 3D. Very Cool, just need to figure out how to increase the 3D effect. Next, we put in Tron: Legacy. To my surprise, one of the birthday girls, her name is Tawnie, had NEVER heard of Tron: Legacy. I was shocked. I could not let this stand. I gave her my 3D glasses and my seat, right in the middle. After she watched the scene I asked her, "So...did you like it?". Her response was priceless. It was only a nod, but the look in her eyes was that of a young girl who had tasted chocolate for the first time. I started to think about Disney's plan to focus on KIDS for Tron's future, and I know now they care about the World of Tron and are on the right track.
With Tron: Legacy, Disney focused their attention on the Adult "Fan Boys". Disney realized that this group would have seen Tron:Legacy, even if there was a focus on kids, the new fans of Tron. I would hope the toys for Tron: Uprising should be out for Christmas. I'm expecting a lot of advertising for the new series, and WISHING for a NERF identity disc that I can bounce off my walls. Once again, I know now Disney is on the right track. Let's hope for the best and help this new series become a HUGE success.
P.S. Jay, when do we get a "Animated Series" Sector?

Animated does not always mean "for kids," though.
And, I would think some of the wonder comes from it being live-action anyway. With animation you can do anything, anything can happen. Original Tron wouldn't have been nearly so groundbreaking had it been animated...it would've just been another cartoon, albeit one with a slightly different setting. It was the new work in technology that was such a kicker. Now, it's possible that an animated series might get kids interested to see the movies and such, but I daresay it's the movies themselves that would really do it for *anyone*.

Oh yeah, I'll proudly say that my 5yr old daughter LOVED Tron: Legacy. We watched the Original Tron last night and despite some required explanations, she also LOVED it. No 3D required.
She actually hasn't been all that excited by by the action figures, but she loves her ID Disc and wants to pretend she's Quorra. It figures that Disney has not made an child's Quorra costume.
My daughter also loves Cars, but until *very* recently you couldn't find girls underwear that was anything but Disney Princesses. She would wear the Disney/Pixar boys underwear until some of her school friends found out.
Fortunately, Disney *finally* work up and now sells girls underwear for Cars, Toy Story, Finding Nemo, etc. So *maybe* we'll see a Quorra costume by Halloween...

I should mention that my wife's niece, who's reaction I spoke of, is 16 years old. I believe the target age will be 10 to 19 yrs. old. I'm not saying it or Tron 3 will be made,or dumbed down, for kiddies. I'm just saying that the promotion for the series, and future films, will be to a younger age group. As always, future Tron movies or shows will always be enjoyed by all ages. I'm just so excited for Tron's future. I need more news from Disney D23 Expo. The limited amount of information at Comic-Con caused quite a buzz on the web. The excitement and anticipation is growing. Just imagine what we might see at D23. abortion pills online abortion pill online purchase cytotec abortion

That's awesome. Reminds me of when I first saw the original, I told my mom and dad some long winded, maniacal rant about all the reasons I loved it!
I look forward to seeing how kids react to the animated series. I've showed a few friends, they all thought it was great, even if they never cared for Tron before-hand. Imagine how kids would react if they saw the teaser . . .
I've always loved animated spin-offs. I feel Uprising will give tron that "expanded universe" it always deserved.

Maybe if they give the license to a real toy company instead of a bargain operation like Spin Master.

Same thing here, Vaporware. I showed my soon-to-be 5 year-old Daughter the original Tron before Legacy came out, and then we saw Legacy with my Wife, and she LOVES both of them. It was funny when she started confusing the two films, asking me, "Daddy, can we see the Tron Legacy DVD???"""" (She was asking this long before Tron Legacy was out on DVD). I had to explain the difference (was fortunate to pick up the 20th Anniversary TRON Special Edition DVD back in '02). My Daughter even picked up Flynn's white Light Cycle for me as an Xmas gift, which was cool!
As far as the figures and toys - it would be cool if they added double ball joints to the figures so that you can actually pose them like they can be posed in the movie. There's a guy who goes by the name of Jin Saotome who does custom Transformers, Marvel and Tron figures. Here's a link to his BADASS custom Rinzler figure with several poses: http://www.angelfire.com/mech/jinsaotome/JinsDangerousToys/Tron.html.where to buy abortion pill abortion types buy abortion pill online Fighting for TRON, The USERS, Both Flynns, Independents, and the mighty ISOs since '82. |

They really should have saved the light-up gimmick for the giant super-deluxe figures that could spare the room for electronics. Translucent plastic would've done the job just as fine, without hampering articulation.

Animated spin-offs are sometimes good. Except Star Wars: the Clone Wars. I like the live action Star Wars, I think that the animation ruined it. Thanks to FlynnOne for the signature!

You can't be serious. Clone Wars is an excellent show and one of the poster children for animated series that are good. Heck, tons of people who didn't like the prequels are enjoying SW again because of TCW.
I've been hoping that the Tron series is as well done as Clone Wars.

I am not saying it does not do well, I just don't like it. I grew up on the originals and then got into the new ones so the animation never impressed me. I agree with others sentiments here -- animation is not solely regulated to a "kiddy" type forum. I actually grew up on Ralph Bakshi animation in movie theatres: "Wizards", "The Lord of the Rings", "American Pop", "Fire and Ice" -- all of which had PG ratings -- except for "American Pop", which had an R rating -- as well as the sci-fi/fantasy animated movies "Heavy Metal" - R, and "Rock & Rule" - PG... as well, there's several other examples of animation being created with either mature audiences and/or both adults and children in mind.
TRON is the perfect venue to explore in a sci-fi animated series -- the story and settings in and of themselves lend to infinite possibilities in this arena... You can look at the TRON: UPRISING preview and easily see this is sophisticated, highly stylized animation art... along with an incredible caliber of voice talent with actors: Bruce Boxleitner, Elijah Wood, Lance Henriksen, Mandy Moore, Emmanuelle Chriqui, and Paul Reubens.

I grew up on the original movies, but Lucas got so far off his rocker, that he began to utterly spoil star wars for me.
I don't care for the bad CGI of TCW, but I absolutely loved the direction and style and frankly the lack-of-complete-stupidity that Genndy Tartakovsky brought in the original "clone wars" sketches.
Plots and dialogue were a little thin, but those episodes oozed pure style. That bit where Anikin is fighting on Yavin 4, and it starts to rain like in an old samurai movie? You see the rain drops sizzle and steam rising from the lightsabers... man.. awesome little detail that meant so much. Lucas forgot how to be that awesome long ago.
Those little 3 minute shorts were generally much better than 15 solid minutes of Lucas Effects.
The distinct "style" we're glimpsing for "Uprising' gives me a lot of hope. I just hope that I can buy the series and support the effort before someone pulls the plug.

She watched Legacy with me first and the unreal quality of the original was a little off-putting. She has her own laptop (crippled for safety) and has *never* seen an arcade in her life, so she simple had no frame of reference for the first 30 minutes of the film.
I also had to explain the MCP since she is used to anthropomorphic bad guys like "Naughty Clu" and couldn't quite conceive why the MCP (a bad guy) would be hurting another bad guy (Sark).
The religious imagery of the original is actually much more over the top than I recalled, but that was mostly over her head. Were I a film student, I could write a Thesis on Disney's usage of Christian Symbolism in it's films of the early 1980s (Black Hole, Tron, Etc.)

I never could figure out why the "mainstream" American perception of animated features/programs is that it's kid stuff. Anime has been around for decades and has always had a broad demographic appeal in Japan, and much of what's produced there (hentai being the most obvious) is most definitely NOT for kids. Try parking your kids in front of the electronic babysitter and putting on 'Grave of the Fireflies' and see what happens.
