Hey, let's get the TRON word out there!

I like to think of it as this Superbowl commercial:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLtkyTn0rwI

Maybe BEP is getting "free stuff" (TRON stuff)?

It was cool they used TRON styled outfits, but dear users can they not sing worth a bit, and they answered a few questions for me like, who is responsible for half the garbage songs from last year.

Slash is still cool, fortunately neither him or the guitar were harmed by Fergie's assault.

They would have made the same amount of money if the lightcycle wasn't there, which pretty much nullifies any prospect of them "cashing in on the movie". Because they aren't. If anything, they are losing money on buying expensive props like that.

You don't know that though. Do you personally have knowledge that more people didn't attend their concerts once they heard the "lightcycle" was there? Even if one person went to the show with the purpose of seeing it because "They have the lightcycle", that means that any one or many individuals going from that vantage point was more publicity for B.E.P. and not necessarily Disney, which I guarantee didn't get a cut of B.E.P.'s profits from the concert, with a ripoff of their lightcycle in it. Not only that but you don't know that prop was actually "that expensive". The creators of the prop could have drastically cut their prices just so that they could have their handywork in a professional concert. Basically they cross-polinated with a well known icon from a soon to be released film and rode the profits to the bank, probably (and very likely since we haven't heard word one about Disney receiveing any monies for the use) all to themselves. This is why Disney has sued viciously anyone that uses their images without permission. The fact that they don't appear to be doing that to B.E.P. I have several theories on.

Why would anybody go there for the purpose of seeing one prop that they could already see on youtube? Somebody who loves Tron so much that they would do that is obviously going to see Legacy anyways. Your point of "even if one person came with that person" is pretty much null. Do you think that selling 1 extra ticket is going to make so much of a difference that it could be considered "riding the profits to the bank" or "cashing in on the popularity"? No matter what, they aren't making any money off of Tron, or keeping Tron from making money, so I don't know what your problem is other than that the performance was bad in your opinion. Also notice that it isn't going to change anyone's opinion of Tron in a negative way, and if anything, it might actually change opinions positively.

You aren't going to get it because you aren't seeing this from the marketing and supply side of the arguement. What B.E.P. did was not an homage as much as it was creating an "impression" that there was cross promotion with Disney....Understand. Its not that they kept TRON from making any money that is the real worry....That probably wouldn't happen even if they did something horrific with the lightcycle. What they did was use another persons material to promote and gain funds for themselves. And you don't know that they didn't gain more concert goers and album sales because they took something and used it to their advantage. You have this mentality like many others that somehow if it "gets the image out there to the masses more, then it's all good." So let me ask you this, if I took images you created on your website and put them in my website and then more people started giving me credit for your work and coming to my site over yours and I never gave you credit or compensastion would you be okay with that? And if it is all good because it is getting the message out, then why could they simply not just say to their audience "Hey guys we think this new TRON movie is gonna be cool, you should go see it." I personally could careless about B.E.P. I go out of my way to avoid them and happened to find a video of them with the Lightcycle months ago so this is nothing new to me, I've been opposed to their use of the cycle since before the movie came out. And see to me this is even worse than Bieber's commercial, because at least with the commercial with Justin and Ozzy the movie was already out and making money. Not so with the B.E.P. concerts and tonights performance was yet another reminder of their shamless theft.

And about going to see it because of the prop....Thousands went to SDCC and looked at the props just to see them in person...When Disney brought the same lightcycle and SHIVA laser to D.C. in August for the USA Science and Engineering festival on the Mall there were hundreds if not thousands of attendees, myself included. Don't underestimate the power of movies and props to make people go out to places for different reasons.

Some call Fergie singing with Slash the Kareokee segment of the show. I felt that way too, and though Fergie was not at her best in a live performance, I usually like her work and think she is an amazing singer. Having her perform, or even "Kareokee" with with Slash was at least cool to see. Not musically, but in a "Hey that is an interesting combo and I like those two" kind of way.

It would be like Wendy Carlos organ music performing a mix with the more techno beat of Daft Punk. Like them both, not sure they would be the best combo, but I would still enjoy seeing them try.

We do not watch Super Bowl in Germany... but do you think Legacy will have a box office bump after this massive commercial marathon?

And do not criticise the complete portfolio of the BEP's. Where is the love? was a brilliant song - no Autotune. However, you can bash Bieber as many times as you want to. Hate this guy. "But but but,.... my career is not pushed by the record labels and managers!!!11".

You know, the Holiday Special kept Star Wars on the map. Remember, no video tape to speak of (though boot legs of the movie existed, and we had a bad copy on Beta) so people loved seeing more STAR WARS in any way you could get it.

All the actors and Actresses were there for cameos.

And of course they couldn't afford them for long periods of time, so they filled it in with 1 hour of mulch. Some was interesting, some was hit or miss.

But what was good were some amazing parts. For example, Boba Fett made his first appearance in the cartoon segment of the special. I remember for weeks at school we were talking about Boba Fett, and soon after, we were excited about the figure offer that came out for the figure by sending in proofs of purchase.

In a nightmare years later I remember Leia singing. I say that tongue in cheek because it did happen, I had forgotten where that happened, and years later I saw Leia sing when I saw the special again. She wasn't all that bad, but not all that good either. :P

You saw the Wookie homeworld for the first time, and the canteena again.

All and all, believe it or not the holiday special was amazing for us fans, and I for one sift through it all and take what nuggets out of it I can get, and for many Star Wars fans they would agree that nugget was the animated segments that showed us Boba Fett for the first time.

And I am huge Fett fan.

With that exceptionally well said, I vote for a TRON Holiday Special...

Can we have a cool animated segment where a cool new character is introduced, and then later I can send in some Spinmaster proofs of purchase for that unique character.?

That would rock!

Oh wow, I had never seen that Tron Holiday Special video before. Haha! How horrible! Fortunatly, the Star Wars Holiday Special was just a bit before my time, so I missed it. I knew of its existance, but no one really talked about it much until the South Park Christmas Special where they had the news guy saying "fighting the frizzies at 11" like it was a real commercial. Turns out that was on one of the bootleg recordings of the show. Then I saw the Nostalgia Critic review it and thought it was hilarious. I even watched the Rifftrax of it. Very very funny stuff. If anyone wants to see the Nostalgia Critic review of the Star Wars Holiday Special, check it out here: http://thatguywiththeglasses.com/videolinks/thatguywiththeglasses/nostalgia-critic/15087-swchr Warning, it contains adult language.

For those who don't know who the Nostalgia Critic is, he is a guy who reviews movies and TV shows that are at least 30 years old. The bad ones anyway. The ones that made you turn the channel or burn the VHS upon seeing it. He's very funny.

They aren't stealing it from them! People aren't giving BEP the credit for the lightcycles' existence. People know it came from Legacy, and if they didn't when they saw the performance, they certainly did when they saw the trailers! So, they took it and didn't give Disney credit. Thanks for giving me the cause, so what's the effect? What's going to happen? In the metaphor you used in which I made a picture and you got the credit for it because it appeard on your site and I lost net traffic, there's the effect. I lost site traffic, so that's bad. What's the effect of BEP using the lightcycle in their concert? What, making money off of it without paying any to Disney?

You may need to do more homework - Disney is very possessive about it's images. BEP might have had to pay Disney money to use the TRON Theme at their concerts... or at least come into an agreement for the free advertising...

You accept Ozzy as congruous with Tron? How is he any more congruous to it or it's style than BEP or Bieber? I think you just like him more, so are willing to be more blind to his incongruence. They're all homages to Tron... No need to over-react just because you have a personal vendetta against BEP and Beiber (and probably Kanye West). How are South Park, The Simpsons, The Colbert Report, Tony Hawk, Honda, Family Guy, Progressive Auto Insurance, Robot Chicken, and Daft Punk (pre Soundtrack-involvement), etc. free to steal, borrow, mimic or pay homage to Tron without suffering your wrath? Hmm, maybe you just don't hate them as much as you do BEP and Bieber. Some of these are just as incongruent, so incongruence shouldn't be the deciding factor. Try not to let personal tastes agenda blind you from seeing the wider picture. Or at least be consistent and hate every pop culture, commercial, visual or music reference to Tron

You know for something that we watched once in 1978 and wouldn't watch again for years and years, it was a free look and some new material for Star Wars and therefore fun for what it was.

It would be like right now, we have a new TRON movie, but are they interested in doing more TRON stuff? Then Disney makes some TRON special and brings in Bruce, and Sam, and Kevin, and Cindy and the whole gang to do cameos of all the characters, and even though it is kinda bad, you know Disney put that out there to keep TRON in the minds eye of the fans, and hope that more TRON stuff would come about.

The Star Wars holiday special kept kids talking about Star Wars, and we were eagerly ready for STAR WARS II.

And think on this...

Star Wars 1977
Empire Strikes back 1981

That is almost a five year gap! I was in Kindergarden when Star Wars came out and in the third grade when Empire Strikes Back came out. That was a good chunk of time. The Holiday Special showed that there was interest in between those two that more Star Wars stuff would be coming out.

(You know, crying shame we never got to see Eric on That 70's Show and his reaction to the Holiday Special.)
