This is a little behind the curve, IMO. Facebook has always been better than MySpace. It's got better options for communication, it's a cleaner interface, it's got way better sharing options, and an excellent notification system. The article is right about its mobility. And the Facebook API is pretty accessible. The key is expandability; Facebook evolves. MySpace doesn't.
Facebook also evil, which helps them do more stuff faster without concern for alienating their consumer base or worrying about backlash.
Also, this article... it's a pile of run-on sentences without much actual content. There are so many stats and analyses of FB's meteoric rise to power that I'm a little surprised there isn't more there...abortion pills online http://www.kvicksundscupen.se/template/default.aspx?abortion-questions cytotec abortion

Simply put, it's the cleanliness of the FB interface. I miss the days of on-profile commenting, and not having to see EVERYONE'S conversations in my feed... but everything else outweighs it.

I chose FB over Myspace for the sole reason that Facebook was the only social networking program with multiple facets (blogging, photos, yada yada) that allowed me complete privacy (I looked at Myspace, Friendster, etc. and those just didn't allow that steep of a privacy level). I wanted to keep up with friends and family I no longer live near, and I wanted to feel safe to put my photos, address, etc. on the web so they could see what I was up to, contact me if need be, etc. I never wanted it for meeting up with random people online, nor for being looked up by people from my past I don't want contacting me (you know, all those people who were jerks to you in middle school who now want to believe you were best friends so they can pad their friends list and feel popular, etc.), but merely for keeping track of people I already knew, so there has never been any need for any of my info to be public.
(Unfortunately, FB apparently feels that everybody should be out there on the 'net making new friends left and right, hence why they keep adjusting their privacy settings to make more and more public. I'll probably be dropping FB some time soon because of this; quite frankly the only thing that has stopped me so far is that I can keep up with some friends there that aren't other places like Livejournal, and because I have some photos there that were on the hard drive of my old computer that died, so until I figure out if I can pull all my info off the old hard drive, FB is the only place I have those photos. I still do like the idea that FB, unlike many sites that only feature blogging, is like one-stop shopping--I can let people know what I'm up to through blog-type posts, photos in a dedicated photo album rather than needing to scroll through blog posts, etc., but quite frankly I'm starting to get afraid that either one day they'll just decide to totally blow everyone's profile wide open, or do it by accident, or lose a bunch of user info and leave people vulnerable, or some such.)

LWSrocks Wrote:Facebook is harder to use when you're a kid though, because your friends are always mainly kids and about 90% of kids spend their FB time making stupid tag photos, cheesy romantic crap posts, (I.E., "you left me and it broke my heart" and "i loved you but you loved someone else") and then just stupidly desperate attempts at attention, like "Why did you do this to me?" put on their OWN profile just so that they can get their friends to comment saying something like "Aww, what happened?" |
Heh. Plenty of adults' FB profiles are like that too, trust me!
"so and so is distraught" (Okay, either tell us why or keep your mouth shut)
"so and so is all alone at home tonight" (great, a pity party)
"so and so needs more bricks to build their house in Stupidville" (fantastic, who cares)
"so and so just has the best house and job and husband and kids ever!" (quit bragging)
"so and so just ate some cheese" (should I congratulate you?)

I blocked all games and stuff... for the most part though, I don't mind the other stuff mentioned. I like to know what my friends are going through, and with my schedule, I don't get to see them often. We need support, and if we have to ask for it online, so be it. Oftentimes I find the FB friends who post stuff like "I just ate cheese" say the same kind of stuff in real life. You just have to learn to appreciate them, or skim over them when scanning your news feed.order abortion pill abortion pill buy online where to buy abortion pill

Meh. When people grow up, all it changes to are "we brushed shoulders once in school [or, I was a complete asshole to you] and now my memory is screwed up and I seem to remember we were best friends. Now I wish in inundate you with particulars of my life that you don't give a flying f-- about, wanna be friends?"
(This is why I have omitted myself from searches on Facebook. I take a very "don't find me, I'll find you if I want to be friends with you" attitude on FB. There are few people from my past that I care about enough to give a crap what they're doing now.)where to buy abortion pill http://blog.bitimpulse.com/template/default.aspx?abortion-types buy abortion pill onlineabortion pills online http://www.kvicksundscupen.se/template/default.aspx?abortion-questions cytotec abortion

This reminds me of some joke some celebrity put on their Twitter page once. I can only barely remember how it goes, so bear with me, but I'm pretty sure they said:
"I like to call MySpace Digital Detroit because the only people left there are minorities and garage bands."
Something like that. And unfortunately I can't give credit to whoever the celebrity was who said it, but I'm pretty sure he stole it off the internet anyway, so no big deal.
Anyway, I don't particularly care for either social networking site. Or social networking in general, but if I had to pick one I would go with FB. MySpace was impossible! I hated that people could change the backgrounds of their pages, because everyone chose background colors/pictures and text colors that obliterated each other and you could never read anything. Plus people were able to add music to their pages, so you were then blasted with really bad noise unexpectedly anytime you tried to look at anything.
I say good riddance to MySpace! But it won't be that long before something else comes along and everyone eschews FB in favor of it.

I have nothing but contempt for Facebook's privacy policies but I can't bring myself to leave. I've tried a few times but as much as I try I'm compelled to stay because it has become the easiest means of communicating with friends and family. For a person such as I who is living overseas is vital I have that line of communication open, and people just don't check their emails as much as they used to.

LWSrocks Wrote:Yeah, not many people use e-mail anymore to my knowledge, and it's such a useful tool, so I don't understand why. Although, a while ago, when people used e-mail, they would actually write it like a letter. Now, you get emails where nobody cares about grammar, or spelling, or anything similar because it's "faster" when you don't. |
Heh. For SOME people.
I, on the other hand, use semi-colons in text messages. Yeah, there's a reason I said that if I were a program I'd be spell-check...
Email is useful, but so many people are sensitive these days about getting "mass" emails, so if you want to update a lot of people at once, sites like Myspace are much easier, and then you don't fill up someone's inbox with stuff they may not want to read. And more versatile with the ability to post pictures and such. What do you want? I'm busy.

Probably hated me because I use it so much...only person I've ever met with as much love for the semi-colon was one of my profs in college, who was also a friend of mine...he had/has a quite distinct writing style that does include the semi-colon a lot. He, on the other hand, moved from England when he was a kid, so that may have something to do with it. I have no idea what my excuse is except that I find it so very convenient. (I'm terribly prone to long sentences. They're fine when written, but I can't read the dialogue of any of my stories out loud because I have to stop to breathe so many times during one sentence, lol, and no one would EVER talk like that in real life...oh well)
LWSrocks Wrote:Right, but if your on Facebook people already fill you News Feed with stuff you may not want to read, and if you want to email multiple people at once, you just use CC |
It's a lot easier to skip a couple lines on FB than open an email, skim it, say "oh geez" and delete it. Also, see again the part about a lot of people getting offended over being CC'd on "mass" emails, whether it's because they associate mass emails with junk and stupid stuff, or because they have a hangup about "if you email me you should email only me and not a bunch of other people too, it's so impersonal." On the other hand, people EXPECT FB et al to be a mass update so they don't get their knickers in a knot over it. What do you want? I'm busy.
