Brand new interview with Kosinski says another sequel is still a possibility.

http://www.reelzchannel.com/movie-news/8682/director-joseph-kosinski-discusses-possible-tron-legacy-sequel
"Tron: Legacy producer Sean Bailey is now president of production at Disney, which may make a Tron sequel even more of a possibility. Meanwhile a ten-part, animated prequel "micro series" written by Kitsis and Horowitz will premiere next fall. Horowitz told Box Office Magazine that the series will "will fill in the blanks of some things, and also explore some new areas as well." - reelzchannel

"This animated show will take place from when Flynn is in a safe house. It's from when Clu takes over the grid to before when Sam comes in. So if you were wondering what was the grid like before that, then watch the show. " - Kosinski

Looking good

Overseas estimate was updated, oh good!

$65,500,000

And the movie is still to be released in several regions.

TRON Legacy's world-wide take should top $200,000,000 by this time next week.

Better numbers are in. All of the movies fell a bit from the early estimates (possibly due to the impact from the awful weather on the east coast) but Tron still held on as well, relatively:

Little Fockers:$8,415,680
True Grit:$7,174,000
Tron:$6,333,441
Yogi Bear:$3,585,00
Narnia:$3,485,140
Tangled:$3,238,433
GT:$2,690,583
Black Swan:$2,451,056

Tron's Monday numbers for the 27th topped its Monday numbers for the 20th.

I'll be curious to see how the rest of the week looks, compared to last week.

Gulliver's Travels doesn't appear to be registering much with holiday movie-goers. It's also getting panned by audiences, whereas TRON continues to enjoy roughly 70% audience approval. That's a good sign.

Season of the Witch and The Green Hornet appear to be the only real competition for TRON, in its genre, for January. Having seen trailers for both, I am not sure there is much "there" there. Nicolas Cage seems miscast in Season of the Witch, and the concept for The Green Hornet, while somewhat faithful to the original premise of the franchise, strikes me as silly. Seth Rogan in an action role? I suspect GH will try to be action-packed and slapstick at the same time, and fail at both.

TRON may never again lead a weekend roll-call, but then again it doesn't have to. It owned its opening weekend, which was the only weekend it absolutely had to own at all costs. Everything else from here is inertia and addition. Even daily takes in the $1,000,000 to $500,000 range, over a month or two, will add up to very nice total box office.

I continue to have very, very good feelings about TRON's long-term status in theaters.abortion pills online abortion questions cytotec abortion

Between the movie recouping its budget this week and the amount it will surely do on DVD and Blu-Ray, I have no doubt Disney is very happy with how the movie is performing.

Besides, it's just about the only decent family-friendly movie in theaters right now so I think it will have decent legs throughout the next several weeks.

The Clu abides, man...

Fun with numbers...

Assuming TRON "tops" at this last Monday's $6M dollar domestic mark, and falls at a steady rate of 10% per day, then a 60 day projected take would look like this:

$6,000,000.00
$5,400,000.00
$4,860,000.00
$4,374,000.00
$3,936,600.00

$2,092,070.64
$1,882,863.58
$1,694,577.22
$1,525,119.50
$1,372,607.55
$1,235,346.79
$1,111,812.11
$1,000,630.90

$18,259.52
$16,433.56
$14,790.21
$13,311.19
$11,980.07

The 60-day total would be $59,892,179.38, for a domestic sum of approx. $147,6000,000 dollars US.

Looking back at comparable movies (Night at the Museum) the descent was not straightforward, in that weekends still tended to be bigger than the weekdays, and even by the end of February NATM was still pulling million-dollar box office on Saturdays, with another 4 months ahead of it in theaters.

So lets adjust things a bit? Bigger weekends, longer run...

Now our grand total for approx. 5 months, with weekend swings up and a gradual trend downard, is $92,086,427.27 domestic, for a lifetime domestic of approx $179,000,000 dollars US. If overseas sales come anywhere close to that, say 85%, then the lifetime world total for TRON Legacy could reach $331,000,000 dollars US.

If the overseas take is LARGER than total domestic, as it has been on virtually all American-made action-genre movies in TRON's general league, then the gross world-wide could easily break $350 million -- and this is before we even discuss DVD-Blu Ray sales or merchandising.

If TRON Legacy breaks $350 world-wide, Disney is almost certainly going to green-light a sequel, on top of the animated series.

I bet the numbers are going to be awfully close to your first projection.

Keep in mind the most likely end of the IMAX run is going to be after I Am Number Four opens on February 18, and it'll be losing 3D screens at the beginning of February (I assume, with Green Hornet and new 3D product scheduled the first two weekends).

I don't think it'll be in theatres much longer than that.

Nice, Jay.

Saw this article from Jim Hill Media posted last week. Certainly sounds more positive than most media outlets. Hopefully he'll update it soon. (Apologies if it's been posted already.)

That article definitely is in line with my own thinking. And he brings up something I pondered as well... would the sequel be cheaper since the look is established and a lot has already been constructed in CGI? I also find the story possibilities exciting too for a sequel since they've taken care of the backstory.

What do you mean, recreate the Grid? In the story or production-wise?

Awesome! I took my sister to watch it yesterday. She hardly knew anything about Tron other than what we saw as children, but she really liked the movie. I was hoping to add to the numbers this weekend by going with four of my friends to watch the IMAX 3D showing. Unfortunately it will have to be put off to next week, but hey it adds to it either way.
