Just wondered what other peoples initial thoughts were on Legacy now that there's a trailer or two out there and other images?
I'm awaiting Legacy with a hint of excitement but at the same time a lot of trepidation, some sequels can ruin the story line of the first film (the Highlander films for example).
I first saw Tron when I was about 9 and it was a truly magical experience and something I'll never forget. It's still one of my most favourite movies ever and I feel lucky to see it for what it really was, an awesome, beautiful and way ahead of it's time production. Shame not everyone saw it that way, their loss I guess.
Having seen the trailers for Legacy one of my initial criticisms would have to be that the cycles and recognizers don't look like they're made of energy like the originals rather than some alloy with some flashy neons tacked on. And of course I'll await the real deal before passing proper comments but whats with the robotic birds dressing Sam? Like something out of a Beyonce vid. The first film showed us another world, don't forget this is a story of two worlds and the beings that inhabit them.
I really hope there is a clear distinction between the two.
Hopefully come Dec 17th I won't be disappointed.
On the other side of the screen, it all looks so easy! |

Simply put, I am looking forward to it. I am not going to sugar coat this with nonsense. I don't think it should matter when you actually viewed the film however the initial fact that people gave it the opportunity is more than what can be asked for as essentially, you want those same people to reflect on the differences between the two films & how they correlate. Now I know many people would think that playing evolution will spoil the so called experience however I Highly doubt it as it will simply give a better understanding of the back story of what occurred during the gap of time. With this in mind, the best analogy I can give with a tie in would be enter the matrix which I am really surprised no one has mentioned. I still own the game & thought it was cool especially being able to use one of the better characters that has very little screen time (ghost) moving along, I think evolution will simply bridge that gap & give better meaning/understanding of the characters which is a good thing. BTW, the highlander reference, you are correct. Highlander 2 renegade version gives a better explanation of that film in general rather than the funky planet zeist. So yes, it did go downhill after the first one which will always be my favorite. Just a word of advice, don't try quizzing me on Highlander stuff as I know Too much about it.

So far I am amazed at the passion and hard work being put into the film, the real sets, the suits, the CG. Everything is looking amazing. My excitement level has been the same since I first saw the proof of concept footage in Hall H back at SD Comic Con 2008.
The world of "The Grid" is very close to how I imagined it the Tron world would look if it "evolved" over a great deal of time. I think the design of everything from the Reco's to the Lightcycles looks phenomenal. While I intiatially was not fond of the suits, they grew on me, and I like how there's lot's of nice groves and contour lines on them that evoke certail details of the early concept art the digital characters drawn by Syd Mead.
The more I see of the film the more I feel the movie is not only paying homage to the original TRON, but to the earliest, bold concepts of Syd Mead's, bringing in a Blade Runner-ish vibe and a 2001 Space Odyssey-ish vibe but with sleekness and a more streamlined approch.
I feel the premise of the story is pretty strong with what seems to be a good emotional, human core to it. I for one can't wait to see the whole film. It's been a long wait, and I'm fairly confident the film will bre pretty damn good.
But unlike maybe some people, I'm reserving to pass any negative pre-judgements, and neither am I building up these unrealistic expectations that no film could meet.
I think if a person let's go of all the pre-conceived ideas and conceptualizations, and let's go of ultra high expectations, that a person may actually enjoy the film. No film is going to be perfect or fit what one wants. Take it for what it is and at least be open to enjoying it. I know I most likely will enjoy the film very much.

I am very happy with all the trailers i have seen so far. Yes the Recognizers and Cycles look different.. but they also looked different in Tron 2.0 so. But I think the new Reco's look amazing!
This movie will rock in 3D . with great landscapes... music action..
and this movie will be awesome for one reason and can be summed up in two words!
JEFF BRIDGES! Believe me latley with him bring in Iron Man Crazy Heart etc.. he has shown what a great actor he is.. Oh yeah Men Who Stare at Goats.. etc...
Mark my words this movie will make Avatar look like child's play in 3D but this is only my opinion ... acman: "I want him in the games until he dies playing" -MCP

What are my initial thoughts? It is a tough question. As a die hard Tron fan, like many of you, I have been waiting and waiting for something like this. And now it is here! Tron is part of main stream pop culture. So far I can appreciate Disney for making Legacy as a fresh movie with references to the first movie. When I heard the movie was being made, I thought that it would be a whole new story, no Bridges and no Bruce. I think it is great that we have everything from the first movie in this one, that is probably the most important aspect of this film so far.
The hardest part of all of this is I am buying the toys, the shirts, etc, I am investing a lot into this financially and emotionally, without seeing the film first. From what I've seen already it looks amazing. This is the first one of three and I am excited.where to buy abortion pill http://blog.bitimpulse.com/template/default.aspx?abortion-types buy abortion pill online

With all due respect, I think you are in fact "clueless" regarding what TRON main story's about pal... It's not just about some 'beings in different worlds'... in fact, you may very well be talking about The Matrix or Avatar or whatever...
TRON's about this guy's journey of self-discovery regarding his 'higher self' through this User-program experience in the digital realm thanks to some new technology.
If you do not agree on this, then lemme tell you that 'Legacy' will be harder on you...

Your entitled to your opinion VRAM as am I. As a kid I didn't need to look into the depths of the story for hidden meanings to enjoy it and I don't now. I don't think it's about a voyage of self-discovery either. All I'm saying is that if the original created a whole new world, something we'd never seen before with things created from pure energy with the limited tech in 81 then I hope Legacy can take that one step further.
We'll see come Dec 17th. On the other side of the screen, it all looks so easy! |

This holiday season Walt Disney Pictures proudly presents an epic science fiction masterpiece 28 years in the making. Tron Legacy will blow you away. You will see all that is, all that was and all that can possibly be. Never before has the screen brought to you a film on this scale. A whole new universe will bust out of the screen at you in the third dimension. This will be the biggest film since George Melies's A Trip to the Moon. If you only see one film this decade you must see Tron Legacy. Jeff Bridges in an Oscar caliber performance leads an outstanding cast. This film will create a whole generation of believers.
Perhaps not.

And to think I was heavily chastised in another thread about bringing up all of the social commentaries (like religious belief) in Tron.

Actually, from knowing Steven Lisberger for the past 8 years and talking over story ideas with him on many occasions, there is a depth there in TRON that most people glossed over and/or missed.
The symbolic aspects are intentional and real. you can watch the film as just an 80s commercial film, or you can pick out the elements that say something more and enjoy that too. to each their own, but those who cynically dismiss the ideas of "higher powers" in TRON are missing it.
It isn't necessarily a religion, although it sounds like it, but it's more of a faith in something bigger than us. The Programs look to the Users for guidance. I got it all those years ago.

In my view there are major symbolic, and mythological aspects in the original film and the new one, the whole Totalitarian/Authoritarian Police State analogy is readily apparent IMO.
It was the original Tron and Clash of the Titans ( not the remake) that first sparked my interest in ancient history and Greek mythology when I was a child and continues to be of interest to be today (along with my interest in tech and quantum physics and other obscure esoteria)

All joking aside I do hope the film does well. It could be a popular film like Star Trek was last year. It could be a disappointment like Van Helsing. I am looking forward to it and believe the visuals will be unique and exciting. I believe the action scenes will be well executed.
So far to me it looks good. How the critics and mainstream audience will react is an unknown.
Some will enjoy it and others won't care for it. As of right now the jury is out. I think the buzz thus far is positive and that's a good sign.

There is some symbolism in there, but I can almost guarantee you it's just the afterbirth of the film's core idea (videogame warriors defeat videogame villain), and not some attempt by Lisberger and crew to be "deep." LOL |
You can get to know Mr. Lisberger a little better by reading what I dare call 'the most interesting Steven Lisberger interviews', both of which are mentioned at the beginning of this thread:

I sincerely hope TRON hasn't lost its deeper elements. We have enough "idiot-proof" sci-fi out there these days - in fact I'm pretty sure that's all there is. But I can't see how Disney could do anything BUT stupify the film to death in order to fit the "widest demographic possible" formula that every single film in existence now has to adhere to.
