Will, this was a great question that got a little buried in the board drama. I'm incredibly curious about this myself. I've noticed the same thing, especially with tie-in lines, that companies are doing this more and more frequently and the end result seems to be consumer confusion or frustration with the line.
While I know there's no chance of Wheat or anyone from SM sharing marketing and distribution strategy, I'd love to have been a fly on the wall for this project kick-off to have heard what the thinking behind it was...
I keep looking at the latest Star Trek tie-in still warming pegs because they just can't seem to move them no matter what the price as an example. I understand that the smaller scaled figures allowed Playmates to create vehicles and playsets on a more affordable level (both their cost and consumer cost) - so this was the scale directed toward kids. While the larger scale with better sculpting and higher price point was directed toward collectors... problem is, neither consumer stepped up to the plate.
I'm wondering why there wasn't a middle ground that was opted toward in order to appease both? Or were they expecting higher demand from multiple price-points that they were ready to fulfill but in the end, only end up over-saturating? Troy, He Fights for the Users

Dang. 2 pages of uber-drama since my last post in this thread? Geez Louise....
Now that I can't remember who asked if anyone was finding the 3-man lightjet at retail, they just missed my post from last night saying I found 2 at my local Kmart.
My opinion of the 3-man lightjet: I don't think it's loyal to the movie at all...but I think it's a cool looking toy. Although I almost broke my thumb trying to put the small wings in. And yes...I did partially unscrew the screws first. It still was a SERIOUS pain. Otherwise, the kids love it. No idea why the front window is shaded instead of clear O.o Very odd. And yes...it's a BIG toy.

CorrupTron Wrote:Hasbro passed on the Tron license. No way they'd want it for Tron 3. Likely a smaller collectibles niche company like Neca since Tron doesn't have the mass retail longevity that Suck Masters was hoping for. |
Tron definitely has potential at retail, Spinmasters just completely dropped the ball. Four different scales of figures was the first mistake. Why the hell do I need 2 inch figures and 4 inch figures and 7 inch figures and 12 inch figures? You're REALLY lucky if people are willing to buy 2 different scales these days with the way toy prices have risen, so 4 was extreme overkill. Even the most hardcore fans would have trouble rationalizing it.
As a result the line that was selling best, the core line, has a severe lack of product available because the focus was so scattered. And unless you plan on making customs, you only need one Sam, one Rinzler, one Clu, etc. Series 2 only added 2 new characters (for a grand total of 8 figures), and series 3 sounds like more of the same. One new character, two repaints, and more series 1/2 figures for filler. Now granted, redeemed Rinzler would have appealed to some people more than your average repaint, but to others it's just the same figure they've been seeing on pegs since September. Wouldn't it have made more sense if instead of repackaging the exact same Rinzler and Black Guard from series 1 into series two, they released these repaints then? It would have definitely improved how bland series 2 was and helped move some more figures.
Lastly, Spinmasters gave up before the video release. If the line was given one more push in April, and with a GOOD series 3, it could have done better than the initial product because you'd have the interest of all the people who saw the film in theaters and bought the series 1 and 2 stuff, PLUS the interest of those who only saw the film for the first time on DVD or Blu-Ray. The planned series 3 would not have taken advantage of that because those who have already committed to this line don't need whatever series 1 or 2 figures they rerelease AGAIN, and I doubt many people would care to get an extra Black Guard just because he has some battle damage painted on. I'm a bit of an army builder and I don't even care. I said I'd get 4 Black Guards and 4 Sentries. I got my 4 Black Guards from series 1/2, I don't need any more unless they did something worthwhile like gave them wings.
Series 3 NEEDED to be the main characters without helmets, and a few new characters for the big home video release push. This way people new to the line can still get a Sam, Quorra, and Clu, but those who already have the previously released figures will still want them because that's how they appear in the majority of the film. How Spinmasters thought it was a good idea to hold these off for a series 4 that would likely never see the light of day after yet another rehashing of series 1/2 figures underperfoms is beyond me.
So in closing Spinmasters didn't know what they were doing, a competent toy company could have really cashed in on this franchise. A lot of movie lines are doomed from the start because they're just bland and unappealing, but Tron has beautiful production design that grabs your attention and makes you take notice. It also lends itself very well to toys with all of the cool vehicles and weapons and such. Unfortunately Spinmasters mishandling of the brand can have a lasting effect on the future of Tron toys. Other toy companies, and most importantly retailers may not be interested in future Tron toys, without taking into consideration the above reasons for the failure.abortion pills online http://www.kvicksundscupen.se/template/default.aspx?abortion-questions cytotec abortion End of line |

To be honest, I'm a bit surprised there were many toys for this movie at all. Tron has just never struck me as a kids' movie, despite being from Disney. But I suppose they had to make an effort at it. I wonder how many people buying are actually kids though (or for kids), as opposed to adults.
Still gonna check out the discount stores for this stuff. Haven't gotten to Big Lots, though. But I've been looking at Marshalls/Burlington/TJ Maxx. Nada yet. I am trying to resist the die-cast vehicles as I just plain don't need more stuff, lol. But I'm keeping an eye out for stuff that's cheap in case there's anything y'all are looking for, at least.
I'm wondering if it might not be a while, though. Right now at the discount stores I'm seeing stuff from Transformers, for heaven's sake. How long ago was that?
(I'm looking for mostly-black packaging, right? Because pretty much when I go I just quickly scan the shelves with my eyes looking for black in sea of bright colors rather than looking at each individual thing carefully. Which means I pick up on all the Halo toys, lol--they're black packaging with that turquoise color for the text, mostly. I've been on the scan for black packages with white and/or turquoise)
Actually, I've never looked anywhere else though. I rarely go to WalMart (part of town I don't get to much and am not going to head over there just to go to WalMart), am still boycotting Target, and haven't been to Meijer much these days either.
I just want the exact figures Sam had in the movie, when he's talking to Flynn and lighting up all the little figures? Yeah, I want those! And then they could've made versions for the other characters they didn't show.

Well, here's the deal. I was mostly okay with him, though I did have my doubts about his age (it changed a couple times, and sometimes his posting style just didn't seem to jive with how old he said he was, unless he was a VERY precocious kid and I suppose it's possible, but...) and then when it got down to the "OMG MY BROTHER POSTED EVERYTHING OFFENSIVE" it sort of rubbed me the wrong way. But, okay, childish...the dude's a kid, or says he is, whatever; I just took everything he posted after that with a grain of salt.
I dunno what the deal was, and I'm not gonna speculate, but to be honest, I'm surprised he was allowed to continue here as long as he did since he openly stated everywhere that he was 11 (or 12, depending on which posts you read). Everything I've always read has said you need to be 13 to post on a message board--I don't know if that's an actual child-internet-safety law, or just a guideline almost all message boards follow for a liability thing. Not that this place is uber-racy, but there is some language here, and some sexual innuendo, and, well, he was the one posting the majority of the "sexy Tron girls" pictures, and I was just waiting for the day that one of his parents possibly had kittens over it all, as my guess is they weren't aware of most of his postings. (Don't get me wrong: thank heaven this board is not super-sterilized, and I'm well aware that the F word was one of my favorite words by the time I was 11 or 12 and my friends were no different so I'm not fool enough to believe anything about the dude's "virgin eyes" or that anything here was even remotely corrupting him, but parents don't always see things that way, Shit, I'm almost 30, and my mom would still stick her fingers in her ears and go "LALALALA!" if you tried to tell her I swear like a sailor)
I even suggested to him once that he might want to, um, up his age a bit, but that advice apparently did not take.
What do you want? I'm busy.
Program, please!
Chaos.... good news. |

Ok programs, this thread has sadly run its course. I say sadly because it's purpose was to inform and share with others about finding the Legacy line at retail, but sadly it has been taken way off topic and ruined by some who add stuff that is not relevant to the discussion. With the line officially over and nothing new being released, this thread is now closed. Please use the "Collector" section to discuss all toy related topics.
