Interview with Frank Serafine

on Monday, January, 26, 2009 3:06 PM
I recently had the opportunity to talk with the sound designer of Tron, Frank Serafine on how he created the sound effects and how the soundtrack was put together. It was very awesome to hear how some of the sound effects were created for the movie. I will post the interview on Tron Wiki, when I finished transcribing the recording.

I'll keep you posted!

How freaking cool is that? I hope to see it up soon, he's gotta be proud of that for sure. I can't imagine how cool that would have been, getting to play with the AV FX back in the day.

Wow, that was a really interesting article! I thought the way he explained the Recognizer sound was pretty cool.

I like how you managed to get some new info about the sequel out of him. Heh.

Great work, Mr. Sinistar. A very good read. Nice to know he's proud of all his previous work, including TRON. But, who wouldn't be proud of creating such memorable sound effects.

Very nicely done, thanks for the in-depth interview. Good information in here that I've wondered about for a long, long time. I hope he's right about TR2N and that they re-use a lot of the sounds he created!

To be honest, I didn't know who did their sound effects and thought Wendy Carlos had more involvement in them than it sounds like she did. Interesting...

Wow that's really cool! I tried the recognizer helocopter sound on a prophet soft synth (from native instruments) and kept tweaking things and got something I think is pretty close, I'll put up a clip. I bookmarked your blog for future reference!

I loved reading that. It was really cool learning about his work.

Awesome article, Mr. Sinistar!

Very nicely executed - from your choice of questions to your documentation of the conversation.

I loved reading about all the strange and unusual sounds that one would never think of using ended up making totally cool computer sound effects. Like a monkey scream for the flying disc or the saw blade for light cycle turns. Very cool and inventive stuff. I like how he has been using the grid bug sound over and over in his work, too.

I've done some weird things to get sound effects for my little productions, but this guy is absolutely amazing!

It must have been very cool for you to have the opportunity to chat with him.

I always wondered myself how the stepping sounds were made.Of course all the other sounds are very good of course, but I like the footsteps most. When Flynn is fighting on the ring game, they make a good atmosphere^^

Thanks for this interview!!
