The Vista I got has no graphics card and I couldn't even play TRON. I still need to get a graphics card. Video quality is so bad I can't play anything except TRON 2.0. Not Portal. Not Half-Life. Not Turning Point. Not BioShock. I can't play any of these for three reasons:
1) I need a graphics card
2) There is enough room on my hard drive for them all (64 GB DX)
3) Although not nessecary, a bit more RAM wouldn't hurt.
Those are a few reasons I hate vista. That and 90% of stuff in general is incompatible with it >_<

This is true Qixx, As you and know we both come from the good old DOS days of 3.3 or earlier. We will try and help out. I do not think centos will work in this case either. to do the repair. The only other thing that I can think of is Linux but knowing some people will shudder at the thought. Myself I am familar with both over here. And I am overdue for a new computer considering my oldest computer is an AMDk6-3 450 over here. Ièll be taking a look into a new computer soon to work and play with over here.

To compute or not to compute that is the question at hand. Tis nobler to compile in C++ or in TASM.

TRON.dll Wroteang, I'll probably have no choice but to get Vista. I know someone who has an XP disk, but I think they're saving it for later.

I'll have to play it all by ear.

Soooo, back to my earlier question, where can I get a computer (computer-only) for a reasonable price that can play Portal and most other games (Crysis doesn't count, my main concerns right now are DEFCON, Portal, and TRON 2.0.)

Here's a list of electronics stores near my location:

Office Max
Wal-Mart
Big K-Mart
Sams Club (no membership)

There's probably more that I can't think of right now. If you have any suggestions, please post here!

First, I hate stores that don't prebuild, get what YOU need. and computers are so simple to put together nowadays, I can't believe ppl. would even shop for one. shame!

You need:
a case: w/ big fans $30. - $60.
a motherboard: $60. - $150.
a PSU: $40.
a processor: $100. - $200. (may be a combo, or barebones core2duo: case, PSU, mobo, RAM for $300.)
a 1GB stick of ram: $60. - $100
a Vcard: 8600 GT OC for less than $100.
a HDD: 500GB WD $85.
a DVD RW lightscribe, ect. $40.
your probably gonna want to get a floppy, since you'll probably upgrade the bios in the near future. 5 bucks.

Free windows xp, I have a spare.

$520.00 complete mayhem on the grid, and net.

lots of good advice already. Best thing is to buy a PC magazine. I dunno whats available in the US, but have a look through at some of the advertisers deals.

AVOID DELL! they are rubbish!

Rule of thumb is BUY THE BEST YOU CAN AFFORD. Hard Disk prices are crashing all over at the moment. I just bought a 250GB drive for $75ish (£39) and I got a good motherboard and processor deal for $140ish (£70).

Get a PCI Express graphics card. Nvidia cards are all the rage (but the drivers are rubbish so expect problems). ATI are in a similar boat.

SLI and Crossfire is probably a bit beyond your requirements so don't be duped into spending the $s on it.

Hard Disks - about 300gb will be fine. If you only use it for small stuff, 300gb will be more than enough. Make sure the motherboard supports SATA drives tho as the price of them is hitting rock bottom at the moment and its easy to add another one later on.

DVD Rewriters are cheap. Blu-Ray rewriters are available at about the $300 mark so if you feel the need, invest in it, but a standard 16x DVD+/-R drive will probably pay for itself in terms of the amount of data you can back up on one disc (4.2GB+ depending on options at burn time)

Office 2007? How about Openoffice? Its free and reads all MS office stuff. www.openoffice.org for more

Wireless keyboards and mice are great ideas, but eat batteries quickly

Need a new screen? make sure you dispose of the old one responsibly!

oh and BACK UP YOUR DATA REGULARLY!!!!! that should be obvious considering what you nearly lost!abortion pills online abortion pill online purchase cytotec abortion

TRON.dll Wrote:So, is there any way I can get a PC with a compatible graphics card, or is it *gasp* SOLD SEPARATELY?
All integrated graphics (except maybe AMD's new 790GX chipset), is total crap for playing the latest games. You need a separate graphics card. But depending on where you buy the PC from, they might put the card in for you. Independent shops usually do that. You pick the parts you want, and they assemble and sell it to you.

If you want to stay on a budget, get something like the ATI 3850. If you can afford to spend a little more, get an ATI 4850. I'm partial to ATI myself, but you could also get an 8800GT and that's a good choice, too. They all might be a little more than you're willing to spend, though. Just throwing some names and models out there.

If you go with some of the recommendations I made, along with the others in this thread, the PC will last a few years. Expect to spend up to $500 for a decent machine.

Alright, I'll see what I can find.

My last computer had some problems with OpenGL graphics. Medal of Honor Allied Assault would always bring up a window that explained it couldn't find an OpenGL compatible driver. Was this a hardware problem, or was there some kind of software I could download from the net? Would a new graphics card be compatible with games that require an OpenGL compatible driver?

If your computer was 10 years old, that meant it simply didn't have the right hardware to run the game. The video card/chip was too old.

Yeah.. We flooded you with a lot of information.. lol..

Once I get back tonight, I'll see what I can come up with (like computer models or something) and post them here... that way someone can give a 2nd opinion and might suggest something better for the price.

One thing I like about this sector is that although we differ from what we may prefer (AMD vs. Intel/N'Vidia vs. ATI.. etc) in the end you'll get a lot of good advice/suggestions and you'll still come out on top either way.

I hope we haven't made things too confusing though.

Actually, I just found out about a computer I can get that sounds pretty good for around $400.

And because this weekend is required to be tax-free by state law, we COULD go get it for around $370. I'm afraid they'll sell out, though.abortion pills online abortion questions cytotec abortion

Alright, I checked out Microcenter's website and found some systems. Please tell me if the pricing is fair on each of them and weather or not it can play Portal out of the box:

ThinkCentre A61 9120-AAU
OS: XP Professional
Processor: 2.3 GHz
RAM: 1024 MB
Hard Drive: 160 GB
Video: ATi Radeon X1250 Video Chipset
Price: $530
----------
Aspire AM1640-U1401A
OS: Vista Home Premium
Processor: 1.8 GHz
RAM: 1024 MB
Hard Drive: 260GB
Video: NVIDIA GeForce 7050 Video Chipset
Price: $300
----------
What do you all think? I was kinda hung up on the phrase "Video Chipset". Any help is appreciated.

Well, if I was going to go with either, I was originally going to recommend the Acer. It looked like it had more upgrading potential. You could start at $300 now, and always add bits and pieces later. But then I realized that it can't be upgraded past 1 GB.

Both will play Portal. But frankly, both are also quite crummy systems for the money.

Alright. Right now I'm leaning towards the $300 one. I've got about 350 Megabytes of RAM in my other *dead* computer. Would that increase the preformance of this machine or would it be a mostly unnoticable change?

I'd also like some feedback from some of the other 1337 TronSector programs.

No, because like I said before, the memory on that one can't be expanded. It comes with 1 GB, and that's all it can ever have. It says right in the description "1024MB PC-4200 DDR2 RAM (Not Expandable)".

And even if you could, the memory in your 10 year old computer wouldn't fit. The memory type used by PCs today has changed.

P.S. I goofed earlier, when I was replying. Clicked edit instead of quote. But I fixed it.

TronFAQ, you can see the full list of other computers I found over at LDSO, I don't feel like typing them all out again.

The Wii's browser (the only one I have access to right now) doesn't have copy and paste.

I'm really leaning towards that $300 one right now. TronFAQ, you said over at LDSO that it'll play portal, but not well. Could you please elaborate on what you meant by that?

One thing to keep in mind is that whatever you buy, you may be able to upgrade later. Say you do spend $300+ on a new PC today, you should be able to upgrade your graphics, ram, etc... To avoid compatibility issues (which shouldn't be that much of a problem) check with the manufacture first.

Youre not going to have much luck going with a high volume mass market producer of POCs like Dell, Acer or tiny as their machinea are pretty low spec to save money. Do yourself a favour and wait until you can afford it, Or take the plunge and buy the bits to make one. Its a lot more satisfying that way.

I agree. I always build my PCs and I always get more out of and save some bucks too... but, alas, it's not an option for him... so I hope he gets something that perhaps he can upgrade in the future.

I've already started forming my list to put toward a new computer.... Amazingly, I've been running a G-Force FX 5980 ULTRA Asus for almost five years now and it wasn't till the next-gen games came out that my PC wouldn't run em... So I'm impressed with how well it held up. I'm thinking about retiring it as a MAME machine once I get a new computer built.. abortion pills online abortion pill online purchase cytotec abortion
