Have you got a disk in the floppy drive?

if so, take it out

If not, id say the hard drive is knackered. You could ask a friend to download a Linux live CD like Knoppix and boot from that, then examine the hard drive (I always keep a copy handy just in case!).

being as its 10 years old, its pretty much past its sell by date and I reckon the disk is damaged. You could try removing the hard drive from the pc, wrap it in a plastic bag and put it in the freezer for 10 minutes. Believe it or not, ive seen this work! It it overheated, this may help, but its a last resort for this type of problem.

My floppy drive's been broken for years...

And the DVD drive...

And the exhaust fan...

And most of the USB ports...

You may want to check out the "History of my Computer" thread. You might find it to be a somewhat interesting read.

Alright, I'm about to turn on my computer. Hopefully, I can log on and get all of my data copied to this jump drive.

Sweet. I got my PC turned on and got all the files I needed from it without any problems. We'll start looking for computers later today or tommorow. Anyone know where I could get a new computer (just the computer and all the cables) that can play Portal for a reasonable price?

I'm warning you now...
DO NOT GET VISTA!!!
Unless you are like TronFAQ (didn't he build a Vista?) or someone else who can manipulate computers with ease, do not get Vista. Get XP instead. XP played TRON 2.0 (Vista didn't when I first got it), XP works with everything. There are so many compatibility issues with Vista I regret ever getting. If you're like me and only know a minimum about computers, get XP, because Vista's caused me nothing but trouble.

I do agree very much so with Cam.. Microsoft repeated it's mistake once again like they did in the early release of 2k (their response was ME which was the worst OS in history). Hardly any backwards compatibility....

Microsoft was losing sells in Vista due to this and other issues so they pulled their XP from computer manufactures a month ago and... alas, you really don't have much of a choice when buying a new computer.

My advice is... buy a new computer and find someone who has an XP disk that they don't mind giving you (with the key/serial number) or buy XP (full version) at a computer store.

I'm waiting out to see what Windows 7 will provide in terms of compatibility.

I just don't get Microsoft... People spend large amounts of money for software (both home and/or business) only to be flanked by a less competent OS that has very little (if any) compatibility with all the software that people have invested so much money into.

Some companies provide updates for their software being migrated to Vista, but not many... Some software that I use that I find handy aren't even on the market anymore and either their companies have abandoned it, or went out of business.

This might be the biggest upset in computer history...

I heard XP production was being pushed back two more years, the best decision Microsoft has made since Vista
I'm seriously considering formatting my hard drive and installing XP (I know somone with XP CD) and installing the Vista transformation (that's free, right?), because the only thing I really like about Vista is the Aero.

Dang, I'll probably have no choice but to get Vista. I know someone who has an XP disk, but I think they're saving it for later.

I'll have to play it all by ear.

Soooo, back to my earlier question, where can I get a computer (computer-only) for a reasonable price that can play Portal and most other games (Crysis doesn't count, my main concerns right now are DEFCON, Portal, and TRON 2.0.)

Here's a list of electronics stores near my location:

Office Max
Wal-Mart
Big K-Mart
Sams Club (no membership)

There's probably more that I can't think of right now. If you have any suggestions, please post here!

What about Circuit City or Best Buy? I can't remember if they have computers or not. Also, you could check a local pawn shop.

Oh, forgot about Best Buy. I don't know if there's a Circuit City around here, but I'd probably try Best Buy first.

Lol, pawn shop.
I think I'd only feel comfortable with a new computer. I've had my share of old computers, I need a new computer that can at least play Portal.

Best Buy is probably a good place to start, right?abortion pills online http://www.kvicksundscupen.se/template/default.aspx?abortion-questions cytotec abortion

I agree about not getting Vista, if you can help it. Problem is, just about every new PC comes with Vista installed now.

It's not that Vista is THAT bad any more. At least, not since Service Pack 1 came out. SP1 went a long way toward making Vista less annoying, and much more useful.

As for buying a new PC. Well, the best and cheapest way to get a PC is to build it yourself. No contest.

But I know you probably don't want to do that. So, in that case, all I can say is . . . buy a good brand name. Like HP, maybe Dell. Either that, or ask around if anyone knows a good independent computer shop where you live, that is known for building quality PCs.

If I end up having to get Vista, what's better for gaming: 32 or 64 version?

The 32-bit version has better compatibility. Most PCs come with that version installed.

I prefer the 64-bit version, but that's because I'm willing to tackle any problems I might encounter.

Its probably just as cheap to buy the bits and put it together yourself. Its only Expensive Lego after all! And you may learn something about how bloody simple computers are to knock together while youre at it!

Tron.dll, if you get this message your bios battery may be dead, or the hard drive is near failure. Just get the battery, take it to the store, it's 1.5v. it should only be about 3 bucks.(IF the config in BIOS is blank where you see HDD specs.)

When your PC posts, you should see the hit del. to config the bios.

In your BIOS you need to see if it detects the drives, if not you need to add them manually to make it operate.

The HDD can be user defined and may be blank. that should be your primary master, for addt'ls primary slave.

you should have a CD drive, which is secondary master.(User Defined ATAPI)

This configuration is generic, so figure out what order they're in and just add them, save and exit. The BIOS will post and boot to your windows normally.

There could be damage from heat, electrical problems ect. if replacing the battery doesn't restore funtionality, it may be a HDD, or some other component. as several here mentioned.

I have had similar problems....

Considering that my PC is 10 years old, and the fact that I'd have to replace everything in it to play anything recently released, I'm just gonna buy a new computer. It's gone through 10 years of nonstop use. It's time for it to retire.

So, I'm just gonna take a wild guess at some system requirements here, I'd like to know if they're too high or too low. I want it to at least be able to run Office 2007 (I don't have a choice ), Portal, Battlefield 2, TRON 2.0, and DEFCON, not neccesarilly at maximum settings. These are rough guesses:

Processor: 4 Gigahurtz
Video card: 128 MB
Hard Drive: *I have no idea*
RAM: *I still have no idea*

I want it to last a while. I'm not expecting it to last as long as my previous computer, but maybe 5-6 years? Correct me at the neccesary fields.

You can't buy a 4 GHz CPU . . . yet. They top out around 3 GHz right now.

I'd say stick with the fastest dual-core processor you can afford, for now. But make sure the motherboard can accept quad-core, so you could simply swap the processor to get a nice boost in the future.

Video card: 128 MB
I'd at least double that to 256 MB, 512 MB if you can afford it.

Hard Drive: *I have no idea*
Pretty much anything will do. But the bigger the hard drive, the longer it will last before it gets full. I'd say at least 300 GB would be a good start.

RAM: *I still have no idea*
Get at least 1 GB, preferably 2 GB if you can afford it.

It's sad. I have a 64 GB hard drive and Vista takes up a third of it.

I strongly vote against getting an HP... Most of my clients that complain about their computers being slow is mainly do to HP putting too much useless background programs on their systems..... HP peripherals are good... HP computers suck nasty donkey d**k...

I suggest getting Dell... or better yet, if you are interested in buying something online (which is usually best to save cash) then check out these links...

Yeah, when I originally got my *now dead* computer in '98, we had to return it because it had trouble with video files. The next one had trouble with DVD's, and the 3rd one only had some minor audio problems that eventually fixed themselves.

I'll probably stick to Dell. We've got a Dell laptop (that I'm not allowed to use, lol), and it works great.

I found some info on Portal, I'm assuming that of the games I listed (TRON 2.0, Battlefield 2, Portal, and DEFCON), Portal is the most advanced (meaning highest requirements.

Recommended system requirements for Portal:

Windows 2000/XP
2.4 GHz level CPU(I.E, Pentium 4/Prescott, Athlon XP/64 processors)
512MB of RAM
128MB-256MB VRAM DX9 compatible video card(I.E, Radeon 9800/X800 series, GeForce 6/6800 series)
~4 GB free HDD space
Mouse and Keyboard
Internet Connection

So, is there any way I can get a PC with a compatible graphics card, or is it *gasp* SOLD SEPARATELY?
