I sent an email on Syd Mead's website inquiring about if he's designing for TRON 2 and the website said they may respond, so let's hope and see.

Have you ever heard of the 1982 classic “Tron”? I’ve personally never seen it. Here’s a short synopsis of the original movie: “Hacker/arcade owner Kevin Flynn who is digitally broken down into a data stream by a villainous software pirate known as the Master Control and reconstituted into the internal, 3-D graphical world of computers. It is there, in the ultimate blazingly colorful, geometrically intense landscapes of cyberspace, that Flynn joins forces with Tron to outmaneuver the Master Control program that holds them captive in the equivalent of a gigantic, infinitely challenging computer game.” Walt Disney Studios is in the process of making a sequel called “Tron 2: The Grid”. The movie is in pre-production and the studio is screen testing actors and actresses. Filming begins in April 2009 and is set to open sometime in 2011.

Apparently, they've started casting, and it seems that this could very well be the final title. Who knows...

Which means this movie's about racing...

Which means it's lightcycle-centric..

Which is cool and all...

Actually, that site misquoted the original source. It's not TRON 2: The Grid. It's TRON 2.0: The Grid.

A subtle difference, but I think it's still important.

Still not sure if I care for this latest title. But I suppose anything is better than TRZ.

What I find interesting — or more accurately, amusing — is that players of the TRON 2.0 game often say "I'll meet you on the grid" when they want to play the game online together. Interesting . . . coincidence.

Before anybody says anything: I know "the grid" was used often in the original film, too. It's just that TRON 2.0 and "the grid" are quoted together so often, around here.

The most interesting paradigm shift is going to be that being a TRON fan will actually (for the first time in history) be "cool". It wasn't even "cool" to like TRON when it came out in 1982!!! Believe me, I was there. The face-scan technology thing used in Benjamin Button was okay, but I hope they advance it a bit for Tron 2. The younger Brad Pitt looked totally CG; and the eyes of the Benjamin looked fake too many times.

I guess I didn't realize the old Benjamin was all CG for the first hour, so they did a good job there, in my opinion... but I always did detect something wrong with the eyes.

Since the younger Flynn will likely only appear while in the computer, with his face in grayed tones and maybe some video noise like in the old movie, I think it'll be harder to detect he's CG'd at times there.

PS: Here's my theory for Tron 2. People keep wondering why Flynn is so evil in the test video, but I don't think he's evil.

I think his alter ego on the grid got temporarily corrupted somehow (thus, the greenish tones) and is running rampant doing bad things for a portion of time there during the movie. Normally nice; temporarily evil.

In the real world, however, Jeff Bridges is still nice -- he's not evil, as others think; it's just that his alter ego is corrupt. Nice by nature, but got corrupted somehow (the MCP maybe affected him).

Since Jeff Bridges communicates with his program via a meditation, he's able to "sense disturbances in the force," if you will. So when the corrupt alter ego goes to kill the other program that he's been chasing, Jeff feels that evil "disturbance" (something is not right in this usually nice program) and so his meditation is interrupted by the jolt of evil. He walks to the panoramic view of the game grid, which is a direct, open portal, streaming view of the grid -- a visualization of the direct mind-link he has with "the other world" -- to witness the evil disruption first hand.

In the end, I see the real world Jeff as being dismayed by the action; I don't feel he is evil himself. And I don't feel his alter ego on the grid is intrinsically evil either.

I'm not sure if anyone else has expressed this view before, as I haven't really read very many interpretations... but it's how I take the actions we see in the footage. Since I don't think it would be a good story to have Flynn become evil, it's what I choose to believe.
