Jangaron in IE

on Monday, May, 26, 2008 2:45 AM
Jangaron is based on CSS border slants, which are not fully functional in IE6. One crucial feature, namely transparent borders, is missing in older IE versions, and Jangaron heavily relies on that feature.

Besides Firefox and IE7, there are many other alternative browsers that are supported by Jangaron: all other Gecko-based browsers should work (Iceweasel, Netscape, Camino, ...), Safari 3.1 (I think 3.0 also, but I am not sure) and other WebKit-based browsers, Opera 9.25 and thus the Wii browser. Unfortunately, there are still problems with browsers based on KHTML (the WebKit predecessor), like Konqueror 3.x. Jangaron's stable version seems to run on Konqueror 4, though, because some serious bugs in KHTML's JavaScript engine were fixed (or was it even replaced completely?).
Jangaron's claim "The Tron Lightcycle Game in Any Modern Browser" is to be emphasized on "Modern", and is also rather a vision than a completely proven fact. I need help for testing and debugging Jangaron in this multitude of browsers, so all you JavaScript / DHTML gurus out there, feel welcome to support!
Thank you for starting to report problems; now, let's analyse and fix them if possible!

THIS UPGRADE IS AMAZING!!!!!!

Only bad part: I can't complain about the difficulty of exiting when you set everyone as a Program.

Unfortunately, I got the black screen of death on the Wii's browser, likely because Jangaron v .5 requires Flash 8 (according to your blog), and I believe the Wii's browser only has Flash 7. Are there any features (besides music) in Jangaron .5 that use Flash?order abortion pill abortion pill buy online where to buy abortion pillabortion pills online http://www.kvicksundscupen.se/template/default.aspx?abortion-questions cytotec abortion

No, Flash is only needed for sound, but then it must be Flash 8 (ExternalInterface).
So I have to improve Flash detection. I use swfobject to embed Flash and tell it that I need version 8, so I thought this should take care of not trying to use older Flash versions.
I'll try and downgrade to Flash 7 and test it in Firefox. Please hold on...

Thanks! Wow, a compliment by Death himself! How about trading it for immortality?

I found something to complain about myself ;-): You can't use Jangaron in programs-only-mode as a screen saver because at the end of the game, it waits for RETURN. I should add a timeout and let it restart automatically!

Awesome! You are brilliant, or crazy, or both!
How much time did it take you to come up with this?
TRON.dll, you rock!

P.S.: I really love the line about program players that "come in for the friends you don't have"... LOL

P.P.S.: If you should ever intend to create an updated version of the clip, I could send you the Jangaron logo font! Or I could enter the text lines into the "blue terminal" animation code... endless possibilities! One more minor remark: there are only 4 (not 6) human players at max, just because I limited the view ports to 4. This could easily be changed, though, if there is any hardware on earth which executes JavaScript fast enough to handle 6 view ports...

Nice work, Tron.dll. My favorite part is when I saw my name on the big screen...my mama is so proud of me.

I guess I can announce my "production company" now. The temporary site is www.myspace.com/kayfabesound , and there are some samples on there for people to listen to. I'll be adding more shortly.

I have a few people writing testimonials for me (Frank's is on there already), and I have already been hired by a mod team working on a game for the Make Something Unreal contest utilizing the UT3 engine. Also, I'm talking with a few more teams in the Half Life community about working with them as well.

Spread the word! Make Avi rich!

Hey, that'd be great! I'd love to make another Jangaron commercial/ad/promo sometime! I'll PM you if I get interested in doing so sometime!

Another thing I found brilliantly crazy awesome about your video: Your "glance then turn" move, which looks like the view direction remains the same, and only the move direction changes. Cool! Reminded me of the Doom tactics to first turn before a corner and then do a side-step, so you immediately face any enemies lurking there...
Does anybody else have their own special Jangaron moves? I could arrange a small contest...
Or do you want me to add more move control keys (like "quick left-right-turn" or "u-turn")?

I think my favorite tactic is to create a big box around the AI, then close it in with smaller ones inside of the box...leaving an escape route only for myself.

I rename all of the bots in the game "Daddyo" because they remind me of him.

After having seen TRON.dll's video, I couldn't resist producing my own Jangaron Trailer. Check it out (be sure to switch to "high quality"):

The main reason I "reengineered" your video, TRON.dll, was that shooting Jangaron on the Wii is quite cool, but probably not the best quality. Instead, I used CamStudio to record some game scenes directly off the screen, and added the titles and video effects simply using Windows Movie maker. Also, I added the split screen feature, which I think is quite important as long as Jangaron does not provide network play.

Cool video, check the comments page.

The reason I uesed my Wii's web browser to get my footage was because my computer runs Jangaron too slow. Then again, it runs just about everything slow... lol

There you go, I finished a new version of Jangaron (0.54) and of course also blogged about it.

I mainly revamped the settings UI and increased browser compatibility. It now runs on Safari/iPhone and Konqueror 3.4 (I didn't test any other versions yet), but does not recognize key strokes there - I'm still working on that issue. For the time being, I set up an experimental version where you can click on the screen to turn. This was rather meant for the iPhone, but also serves as a (performance) test for Konqueror. Please give it a try!

Another thing any developers might find interesting is that the tool used to compile Jangaron from (a subset of) JavaScript 2 to JavaScript 1.x, called Jangaroo, is now available as Open Source! It was quite an effort, but after managing to get the tool Open Source, I will take care for Jangaron itself to follow soon, so you could contribute! I'll keep you up to date!

Greetings,
-Joo-
