I suppose it's a normal reflex--
It's just seriously disbelieving... so laughter tends to just come out even when it doesn't feel right to laugh at that moment, but it's just one of those things.

None of us would be laughing if they'd been seriously hurt. We can share in the humor of a wipe-out unless it's actually a major injury. Hell, I laugh at myself all the time when I wipe out.

It's probably to do with the way the two events are portrayed - the first is a skating screw-up live on camera with a large crowd cheering the skateboarder on as he tumbles through the air, comically flailing his legs about. The second is moodily-lit and has an ominous soundtrack, and has been edited for full impact with before and after statements, with the performer saying that the biggest moment of his life is 'right now', right before he piles through a line of hard, metal chairs.

I caught it during the actual broadcast and was shocked. I felt bad for him, but then started thinking about how he went completely rigid and did the little "fwoop" thing on top of his head.
