In some respects, it's cause of the atomic age. Think from the 50's stand point... Man just harnessed the power of the star, this brand new energy source, so ANYTHING was possible for the future, no matter how crazy it sounded. Technology was going through a major progressive change that reshaped how everyone lived, worked, played, and thought , which also renforced that "anything's possible" attitude. There were some wild predictions for the future.

That was pretty neat 
Though it reminded me of one of those shorts that they'd make fun of on MST3K or something...
