Retro-Tron!

on Monday, January, 22, 2007 11:15 AM
I don't know if this is the most appropriate forum to put this in, but it seems the closest that _I_ can come up with...

Anyway. I know it's bad form to post a new topic when you're a newbie to a board, but I have a feeling nobody will object to this particular post. Because I went and scanned some neat stuff for you, programs. What is it? Vintage magazine articles about the movie, not looking back from an "older and wiser" perspective, but instead from the movie's own time itself!

Welcome to 1982
Yeah, see, my mom has all these old sci-fi magazines, and I kind of absconded with the ones that had anything to do with "Tron" (all geeks should grow up in a house with such a resource, I swear.) In many cases I left the page whole to show the context, and the pictures are still large--they had to be, to keep the text readable. I also included some random other bits that I thought were interesting, told about the time-period, etc.

Enjoy! And you won't need any permissions to get into these archive bins, or to spend 5 energy points per download, either. They're all free. Because that's just the kind of nice, generous evil computerised imperatrix out to take over the world that I am. (Um...)

You WILL, however, have to put up with my babbling. You knew there'd be SOME price. :P (Well, you can skip it if you want.) Anyway, if anybody in charge of this site wants to put any of these articles/pictures into whatever categories would be appropriate so that they can be preserved for other Tron fans to see _after_ this thread falls off the board, please, do so! That's what I scanned 'em for. The magazines are falling apart, but the digital version can live on! (I'd submit 'em formally except the last time I tried to e-mail any of the admins, it kinda bounced.)

When I first joined, I thought that too; but actually, everyone is so friendly here that it's not a problem - the new members always get a warm welcome! As we all keep saying, Tron-Sector the friendliest community on the internet!

It would be nice to have this page or information here at the TS, so we wouldn't have to deal with all those crazy Anglefire pop-ups.

Nice collection and reference material. I know DaveTron was planning on archiving all old articles and pictures to have a central repository that could be easily accessed.... but then he split. Nice to know someone is carrying on that task.

I hope everybody enjoys 'em. My stupid scanner is a pain to set up, so once I had it plugged in I went looking around the place for EVERYTHING about the movie I could find (in my house at the moment). Heh.

And yeah, this place does seem relaxed and nice, which is one reason why I thought I'd risk posting a new topic this early---and also one of the main reasons I wanted to join. Awww. But seriously--most of the time I'd wait until I'd been on a board at least a month before trying this. :P

I apologise for any crookedness, by the way. Some of these pages just wouldn't stay still while being scanned...
Yeah, I know Angelfire is annoying. I only used that page 'cos it's sort of my back-up auxilliary website, and therefore has more space to burn than any of the others. But I totally want to submit these to the site, if possible, regardless of where they're at right now. I'm not sure how the admins here would normally choose to arrange things or which one I should e-mail, so I thought I'd toss 'em out where they could see 'em and decide what to do about them themselves.

(Archive ALL the old articles? I wish, but I don't have those kinds of resources. The only reason I have any articles about Tron is because my mom is a Trekkie, and Star Trek II came out the same year. If the magazine issue had an article in it about Tron but NOT also Star Trek, she would've left it on the shelf. So there's a lot of 1982 stuff that I don't have...but I'm glad that I got to see the bits that I did.)

Cool stuff! There are so many file archives at Tron-Sector here that I'm not sure if DaveTRON already posted the articles, etc. I don't remember the ones I've seen on your site so far.

Ed Naha's review was lame where he said there was no redeeming sub-plot or philosophical statement to make the trip worthwhile. He pretty much says the only point to the movie was that a young hero beats a mean 'ole computer. Umm, did he forget Flynn got evidence that proved Dillinger resorted to lying, cheating and stealing to get his way to the top (crime doesn't pay or however you want to analyze that)? Or other sub-plots?

PS: Was cool to see a TV Guide ad for You truly are a Tron geek! But that's why we like you.

Yeah...I'm a geek! (proudly waves her Geek Flag high.) But seriously, though...I don't go around keeping _everything_ I see on a subject I like, but I kept that one 'cos it was right after I had first become a fan and hey, why not. :P I think what I did was wait until the week was over but the TV Guide hadn't been thrown out yet--so that I wouldn't bother anybody else by ripping out a page--and _then_ snagged it. Then I put it in this book about the '80s that I have, as a bookmark, 'cos I thought that would make sense. Heh.

Yeah, the Ed Naha thing...I thought of writing out some of my arguments to that on the page, but I figured, why try to argue with 24 years and a few months in the past? :P Still, yeah, the impulse to say SOMEthing back to it is irresistible, same as when you yell at a character on the TV screen whom you know can't possibly hear you. (Well, at least _I_ do that sometimes. Don't know about everybody.)

The film _does_ have a philosophical message, maybe several (everybody has their own interpretations), we _do_ have a reason to hate the baddie (I'm a writer, too--if somebody stole MY stuff they'd be lucky if I _only_ hacked into somewhere and proved that they did it! I can _totally_ sympathise with Flynn's anger.) and last but not least, what's with the program characters not having emotions?
What, did he get dazzled by the special effects and not notice that there were still people under there? Or is that he can't quite wrap his mind around the concept of people made out of electricity and light still being..._people_? That's predjudiced, that is! :P But seriously, if you can't suspend your disbelief for new types of alien being, maybe you shouldn't be writing for a sci-fi magazine. (If I may paraphrase another software-based character, "they are real--just different!")

At any rate, I didn't notice the actors saying lines "at" each other. It was a big grand adventure type stuff with some corny lines, true, but they still seemed to have personalities and to be reacting to each other with normal emotions...

See? I ended up arguing back to the guy anyway. I knew I'd fall into that eventually. :P

Anyway. Where is DaveTRON's stuff, by the way? I wanna look at it...

Oh, yeah. I looked in there before I posted and, nope. My stuff is not already in there. That's why I went ahead and scanned it. I was thinking maybe there was a section of stuff sent in by one person listed by name, so I could go to "DaveTRON's Stuff" kind of a thing...that's why I asked. But I already knew about the image gallery. Yep.

That's kind of why I even signed up for this board, in fact--'cos that's where I found the two old fan-art pictures of mine that _I didn't send in_ and it weirded me out... :P When you see somebody that already knows you but you don't know them, you kind of get this impulse to walk up and introduce yourself. Heh.

That's cool. What two fan art pictures of yours did Tron-Sector swipe from the net without your knowledge and post here?

Sorry about that. He did work for Disney and most of the stuff that's from that gallery is from his collection.

This is kinda off-topic, but has anyone talked to Dave lately?

They're not very good and they're posted under my real name (granted, my real name is written right _on_ one of them, so it wasn't exactly a secret) and so I'd rather not. I mean, the first one is okay, but the second, severely screwed up. I can draw WAY better than that, really. (Unfortunately I don't have any more "program" pictures to show anybody right now, but I could always link you guys to my DeviantArt page as proof that I can draw better than that in general... :P)

I know where they must've found 'em at, though, now: Animated Lust (Rated PG!) I thought at first that maybe I had submitted them to that little, obscure, now-mostly-dead "Encom's Basement" site at the same time that I sent in my cheesy little fanfic, but now I remember. Years ago, I asked Kat (the owner of Animated Lust) if Tron could be considered "animated" or not, and she went, hmmm....well...? Sure! and I sent my pictures in to THAT site. Which is big, still alive, and easy to find. So they were probably found there.

And DaveTRON used to work for Disney? Whoah. It's always neat to see people who had something to do with the real thing suddenly showing up, on one's fansite...

Anyway. Closing down output operations...
