Some white-trash freak of nature hacked into my computer last night and destroyed everything. I had to format my C: drive and lost everything.

I'm just about to go on a rampage because I had projects that I was working on for years that is lost forever... I know I should have backed them up but still... I am sooooooo super pissed right now....

Anyways... I'm in the process of installing windows XP...

Man, it really sucks to hear that.

I can't quite empathise with your situation, but I have had many hard disk scares in the past and once I did lose a lot of files, and I know how damn frustrating it is, so I offer you my sympathy.

I hope you can piece back together anything that you might have had copies of. Good luck!

Oh man - I'm SO sorry, Qix77.

I almost lost Weed Killer 2 before it was finished (if you recall a few months back). It broke my heart - the thought of loosing it and so many other unfinished projects. I spent so much time on things and to have it all just be gone was a lot to deal with.

I was lucky though. Using a program called "Get Back Data" I was able to retrieve about 95% of what was lost.

Protect yourself in the future, as you now have learned. Protect yourself and BACK it up!

It a weird feeling when you feel so safe because nothing ever seem to happen to your computer other than common issues like things running slow or bad sectors popping up... but when something like this happens and you know that someone has been phishing around in your computer destroying stuff, it really freaks you out.

It's as if someone broke into my house and started smashing things..

But it's not the end of the world. I'm just really happy that my HD is fine and nothing on the hardware end is destroyed..

I'm on my desktop now and everything seems to be working fine. It sounds like all you had protecting you was a software firewall. At the very least, you now know first-hand the importance of having both a hardware and a software firewall. Windows XP creates a hardware hash based on the hardware it detects upon installation, and combines that hash with your Windows XP product ID to create an Installation ID which is sent to Microsoft at the time of product activation. If you significantly change your hardware, the new Installation ID won't be close enough to the old one, and you have to call MS to reactivate.

Yep... I had installed two DVD burners and a new slave HD before this happened, and I know that was the reason for it... plus I've been swapping out vid cards rather often and had to call MS a few times about it with no problems...

But this time, it was just crazy... I never had a problem with them before. I guess the lady I was talking to also had a bad day as well.... but it happens...
