Welcome to the 80's.... oh wait... uhhhh.... ok.. so we are not talking about VHS vs. Beta... or are we???
Enter Blueray:
Blueray is an impressive form of media. It can hold up to 50 gig on one disk. Very impressive. With all the crap I've been storing on DVD, it sure could clean up my computer room rather nicely. Not to mention the amazing bonus content they can stack on this baby when you go and buy a blueray movie.
So why isn't everyone on the Blueray-band-wagon? Easy... Stability. Phillips and Sony (to no surprise) sort of rushed the tech behind Blueray and many are wondering if this format will hold up like a DVD will... I burn a DVD there fore it can out live me (in theory). So if I buy into this format, is there a garentee that my content is still going to be around if I need it 20 years from now??? Good question.
Enter HD-DVD:
This little baby will hold up to (about) 20 gigs. It's about half of blueray but still 20 gigs is a lot of space. From what I've read, its stable but blueray is in the limelite (no pun intended). If I was to store a collection of porn (for example) on a disk so that my perverted mind can get a retro-fix 20 years from now, then HD-DVD says that it will still hold the dirty content that is destroying our culture.... He-haw...
So why am I bringing this up???? Because all the tech gurus don't know which will be the next media standard. I would love to see blueray become the next standard but if it doesn't deliver then we'll have to settle for HD-DVD.
I know that the PS3 is using Blueray media... but thats Sony's way of doing their thing. If it does become the next standard then I can surely use it.
So... what are your thoughts on VHS and Beta.... uhhh... I mean Blueray and HD-DVD?????

As with any proprietary format, if it becomes too expensive for people to buy (hardware and media) we'll see it go the way of the Dodo, no matter what the quality.

Poor ol' Sony - back in the middle of another format war. Maybe we should go soft on 'em out of sympathy.
Format wars confuse me. I grew up with VHS, so I didn't have to worry about the first (although my Newgrounds account is 'Betamax', but for some reason 'NoExcuses' presided when I migrated to other forums), but now I'm interested in the whole video deeley (when our tiny, 4:3 TV that we've had for years stopped working, I practically held my parents at gunpoint to get a new, HD ready 16:9 TV, and not another TV with cropped sides, 99p no reserve from eBay )
I agree with Boingo on the cost aspect, but I reckon that if HD DVD prevails, then Blu-ray might stay on as the professional format of choice, like Beta did.order abortion pill abortion pill buy online where to buy abortion pillwhere to buy abortion pill ordering abortion pills to be shipped to house buy abortion pill onlineabortion pills online abortion questions cytotec abortion

What is keeping me from investing early in either is that I'd hate to get my hands on one and it turns out that the other format becomes standard. I guess we'll just wait and see what happens. The future of tech is always hare (more like impossible) to foresee. No telling what's going to happen in the upcomming years..

We just went through this with recordable DVDs, as well . . . there are two standards, DVD+R and DVD-R. And that format war was never resolved. You can still buy both types of blank media, and DVD recorders support both.
I don't think that will happen this time, though. One format will eventually overtake the other. I think HD-DVD will be the winner. It may be technically inferior to Blu-Ray, but most people might consider it "good enough". On top of that, existing DVD factories will have little trouble adapting their equipment to making HD-DVDs. Blu-Ray, on the other hand, requires the factories to invest in totally new equipment.
Oh yeah, and the creators of HD-DVD don't demand huge licensing fees to use the format, like Sony does. That's part of the reason Betamax died last time. Sony wanted to collect big fees from everyone who made Betamax tapes.

Eventually I'd like to pick up a PS3 and use it mostly as a Media Center Computer for my TV and my entry into Linux so I'm rooting for BLU-Ray to win. Blue lasers fight for the users.
No excuses had a good point of Blu-ray staying on as the professional format of choice, like Beta did. I totally agree with this I know a digital video artist that is still holding some work on betamaxs.

I'd like to see Blueray become more cost effective and stable so that its superior storage format can become the standard.
But... it will likely be the HD-DVD that becomes the standard. Bummer.
Just ONE of my video projects (all source files) often takes up more than 20GB, so the damn HD-DVD won't hold the entire project. Blueray would be so very nice and I could store my projects - each on a single disc. Grrrr.
Oh well.
The funny thing is that I actually preferred the VHS over the Betamax back in the 80's. Why? I much preferred the two hour thing over the superior quality thing. These days I'm all about better quality... but in digital terms, it all comes down to storage capacity AND reliability. A bit is a bit is a , so long as enough of them fit on the storage media AND stay there!

I'm still fond of my 12/24 tape back up over here from Seagate. I still use it from time to time.On a DAT3 tape settings. Heck why not stick with something that has been a true blue for servers. Thats what I use over here on my SCSI II cable over here. Just have to flip iit to the machine over here. I think even the other tape drives taht could go onto AIX machines are not that bad either if you go to the recycling centers. Half the price and still very reliable for anyone. Fine it may not be fast. but they do do the job for back ups and restoring stuff.

I love the concept of Blu-Ray, but it's true. Sony is a very suborn company. They tried pushing a floppy disk format back in the 80's that only they would produce and sell, and it failed. It's a shame because Sony does make some good stuff.

From what I have been told (from people and other sources).
That HD-DVD basically gives off a better image because it is recorded at a higher resolution which takes up more space on a disk. Which is around 20 gig.
Now Blue-ray does just the same as a HD-DVD but with it being able to store a massive 50 gig of data its not hard to see which one will win this format war.
Firstly all PC users will prefer the massive data storage available on the Blueray DVDs. Plus with the backing of Sony and their PS3 using HD-DVD companies who produce these disks will favour the Blueray Format for the sony income alone.
And Finally with the larger space on the blueray disk you can get Higher quality from a blueray movie than you would from a HD-DVD simply because you can record at atleast twice the quality of a HD-DVD which makes the blueray a little more future proof for the next gen HD TVs.
So my vote goes for the Blueray to win this war

I agree. As a PC user and PC gamer, I really would like to see Blueray as the next standard. With all the crap I have backed up on DVD already, it would be nice to migrate all that data to about two or three Blueray disks.
But my only concern is how will it be marketed. Sony is stuborn when they have a patent on hi-tech. They have a history... but if they do the right thing and allow other companies to produce blueray, then it can easily become the next standard. But, if it comes down to HD-DVD then I wont shed any tears.... but I want blueray. |

Well, except that there will only be one manufacturer for them, and they'll change whatever they want for it. I hear Blueray players are going to be $1,500 upon release (They're taking a HUGE loss releasing them with the PSP3's). You really want THAT cost alone added to the cost of a PC? Even if you do, the average joe consumer won't, and it will cost resellers profit.

Well I don`t have them either over here. But I did use or learn off of them at least between the minicomputer and the microcomputer. And that was using a amber monitors on both of those in the mid 80`s to early 90`s before microcomputers started coming onto the scene.

Yeah... That was what I was talking about. Sony gets very stuborne when they try to pass a new form of media. They have a history of doing so. It's always a headach when a company does stuff like that.
My greatest concern is investing into it, then find out that it's no longer on the market and I can't use it to transport data because everything went HD-DVD.
Thats why I'm going to wait this one out... even if it takes a few years... by that time, the tech will be improved a bit and more cost efficent. Till then, I've got my DVD-/+Rs.

It always seems to come down the same companies. Sony/Philips on one side, and Matsushita/Toshiba on the other. This has repeated itself several times over, since the days of Betamax/VHS.
You know what? I didn't even realize until now, that DVDs were the result of a compromise between - you guessed it - Sony/Philips and Toshiba. They originally had competing formats, called MMCD and SD. They ended up merging the best traits of both formats together, into the DVD standard. So we narrowly avoided a format war with DVDs. Unless you count DIVX, if anyone remembers that. (No, I'm not talking about the video codec. The other DIVX. )

Unfortunately, being technically superior doesn't guarantee victory, I think. Usually cheaper/easier or first to market wins.
Perfect example of this is the Wii vs. PS3. The Wii is way ahead, even though it has less features and the graphics aren't as good. (Yeah, I know the shortage of PS3s doesn't help. But Nintendo is still having a tough time keeping up with the demand for Wii consoles, even though they have a large supply of them.)

Neither.
Storage media with far more dense information packing capabilities are just around the corner.
Besides, people have really only just jumped on the DVD bandwagon in earnest in the last couple of years. I don't think that very many people will all that eager to replace all of the expensive DVD box sets they just bought with yet another fleeting standard.

I agree. When the general public decides to move to the next format, it will take a long time before it's accepted. The PS3, however, is a good entry by introducing one format on a large scale but I seriously believe it will be advance PC users who will invest first for storage purposes.
One thing that most of us don't realize is that DVD to the general public is still considered new. There are still folks that are finding it hard to part with their VCRs.e
We live in a day and age where everything is moving so damn fast. It took a long time till the music industry decided to stop making records and invest almost everything into CD. I haven't gotten out to the music stores lately so I don't know if casette tapes are still being made. Amazingly enough there are still a lot of people who don't have DVD drives in their computers (but this is too easy because lower end users are still packing around old computers). By lower end, I don't mean idiots in anyway but just folks that don't use their computer for much more than getting online or listening to music.
So here we are again and we arrived at this point very fast. It's amazing what goes on in the tech world when you don't keep up with it a few times every month.
...... but we still don't have flying cars, droids, energy weapons, or jet-packs.... damn it..... lol....
