Commodore 64 infested by Weed Killer (Episode 2)

on Sunday, October, 22, 2006 9:03 PM
It seems like I've been working on this one for a long time, but it's finally ready for prime time! :-D

Weed is back with an upgraded look, a cool new intro sequence, and some rather interesting material on his mind. With all the growing forms of entertainment and the ever changing face of pop-culture, Weed Killer lets loose on a rather unique new form of entertainment that really sucks (so to say).

You'll find yourself cheering on the digital 8-bit personality, and likely to enjoy a few laughs along the way.

Yep, a few puns in there.

For optimal viewing quality, my website:
http://www.thereeltodd.com/weedkiller/WK002.htm
If you're a member of YouTube, please check it out there too and leave me a comment & rating. If I get enough comments in a 24-hour period, the video might make the "most discussed video of the day" page and reach a much larger audience. I'd appreciate your support!

If you're like to watch it at MySpace:

I worked hard on this one, and had a lot of technical difficulties along the way, from my moody video editor, to my DAMN IBM hard drive that failed on me when I was almost done! But it's finally done out there now.

As some of you already know, Sketch provided the new old-school computer graphic look of Weed Killer. I was having a lot of trouble coming up with a color look that I thought was right, and Sketch was very generous to offer several concept images from a source photo I provided. They were all really cool looking, but one of the images stood out to me, and I knew that would be Weed's new look. Thank you SOOOOO much, Sketch - you ROCK!

I hope you enjoy the video.

I'd really appreciate some feedback on it - what you liked, what you didn't like, etc. I'm considering doing a Weed Killer Ep.3 video, so feedback is welcome and very helpful to me.

Oh yeah, if you really, really dig the video, please e-mail it to anyone you think may also like the video! I'd really appreciate that!

Other subliminal messages include: "chicken sandwiches", "the dark crystal", "thereeltodd.com", "crack", "weed killer", "the news lies", "back to the future", "tron rules". Are these the same messages as in your last video?

Todd, I think that brain of yours needs some serious help.

This is the best video I've seen in a long while - brilliant! I love the story, I love all his little character quirks and I love the intro! You've got a great sense of humour, and Sketch did a great job with the visual look of the new Weed of '84.

Excellent work, as always. I was expecting it to be amazing, and it managed to be even better!

I'm eagerly waiting for more of your video extravaganzas. Exxxxxxtraaaaaaavaaaaagaaaaannnnnnzzzzz-- ooooh!

Thank you so much!

I'm glad y'all so far have enjoyed my demented little character's take on the rather bizarre form of entertainment shared in the video!

I especially appreciate all of the TRON-Sector YouTube members who took the time to post a comment there and offer a rating. It did indeed result in my video being featured on "Science & Technology's Most Discussed Videos of the Day" page. It didn't even come close to making the regular most discussed video, but that was still really cool to hit the most discussed science page like that!

I responded to each YouTube comment with a personal thank you! You guys (and gal) ROCK!

There are some comments missing there... and here, from people I expected to chime in and I imaging have indeed seen the video by now.

Not everyone will like my work, or all of my productions, but I do hope I have not offended anyone with the very absurd subject matter in the monologue of the video. The subject matter is kind of gross, but I didn't think it was flat-out disgusting, disturbing, gross - I thought it was just really absurd and silly.

Oh well. I'm an offbeat, non-mainstream, square peg in a round hole kind of guy. I don't pretend to be normal, and I'm sure that shows in my video work. I'm sure it shows in my posts too.

Thanks!

Yep, "light cycle" and a lot of other hidden nerd-words are in there.

Traahn Wrote:Other subliminal messages include: "chicken sandwiches", "the dark crystal", "thereeltodd.com", "crack", "weed killer", "the news lies", "back to the future", "tron rules". Are these the same messages as in your last video?

Ahhhhhhhhh!

What?

"CRACK" is in there???

Nooooooooooooooooo!

Grrrrr.

Everything else you pointed out is indeed in there (and then some), but "crack" is NOT intended to be in there.

Crap - I'm already a little worried about people thinking "Weed" is a reference to pot (which you all know where the name came from). With "crack" in there, I bet some idiot (not anyone here) might say "see - this guy is promoting illegal drugs" or some crap like that.

Damn.

A guy at work told me that "DICK" is also in there. Again, I did NOT insert that word in there, but he found it and told me about it. Nope - it is NOT a hidden joke.

The 3D rotating ASCII grid in this video is different from the last video, from the font, to the content. I generated the content for the grid by using a free online crossword puzzle generator. I input several words, phrases, film titles, etc. and it spit out a crossword puzzle. Very simple, quick and easy.

BUT, I didn't count on potential words that were random.

Oh well. I hope this doesn't get anyone thinking the wrong thing. Hiding my little nerd-words in there was a fun little Easter egg thing for me - not meant to give people any negative or dangerous impressions.

Todd, I'm so glad you were able to rescue Weed Killer 2! Because man, is it awesome!

Just the part at the beginning alone, is too cool for words. The whole boot-up sequence on the C64 is brilliant.

And then the look and the humor of Mr. Weed (should I be calling you that? ) is so different and refreshing. The 8-bit look is great! You and Sketch did a fantastic job. No more mistaking it for the Matrix, this time.

I don't think you have to worry too much about people checking for bad words. A lot of people probably couldn't be bothered. But I do understand there are a few people out there that like to pick on every flaw, and then rub it under your nose in a rude way. Those people are jerks.

Once more, I'm amazed at what you've pulled off on the hardware and software you have. From what I understand, it's not all that up to date or the latest and greatest. So for you to pull off such a cool video on an older home PC, is a real testament to your talent. Like I said before, you're a true guerilla filmmaker!

I'm sitting here in the mac lab working on a project. Have shown the video to some of the fellow students and they love it.

Great job on the video work Todd!

It's a great thing that you didn't loose this project. Love the intro. Nice little C-64 set up. Glad I could help out by throwing some concept imagery at ya to help you get a better idea what it was you wanted to achive. That was the whole purpose, to try some random design effects and see if any where what you where looking for. The pixels turned out great and animate really well with the movement of the character. The video is excellent Todd!

I spotted "SKETCH" in the background.

Well, gotta get back to work.

Arg... just realized I fall in that catagory. Yes, I saw it yesterday but was too busy to say much. I don't have a youtube account but I just attemped to post a comment there.

Great work as always... I wish I knew how to do this stuff. At the moment I don't even have the time to work on simple still frames... let alone animations. I was always a big fan of Max Headroom (Hmmm... anyone know if that series is out on DVD?) and I hope to see more of weed.

Also one other question... anyone know how the original Max Headroom effect is generated. He looks CGI but if I remember correctly he's not. I like the looks Sketch came up with but I have to say I like the original Max Headroom look more. Not knowing how its done I don't know if that's something you could copy or not but seeing that it was done so long ago I wouldn't be surprised that its something a home PC could do these days.

Hmmm... now I have to go look for Max Headroom DVDs,
Carl

It's quite cool Todd. I too like that introduction, but I missed the "RATTTATTAATTAAAA" noise my old 1541 used to make

The term "Got Weed?" on your main page, did make me think you were making a pot reference, to be honest....but only as a pun. But the name of the character being "Weed Killer" didn't.

Quite professional and very well done!

Thank you!

You know - I set out to make a quick 10-second intro... and it turned in to THAT. Then I started to feel like that intro shouldn't be used on a comedy bit like that because it looked all mysterious and sci-fi like... but it works. Making videos is a strange thing for me - I start out with an idea, I get footage that looks a certain way, I work with what I've got even though I can't do what I really want to with it, and then I massage it until I like it (or at least don't hate it) and then I end up with something similar, but not quite what I set out for. In this case, I ended up with an intro sequence that looked cooler than I original envisioned, although fell short of what I wanted to do... if that makes any sense. To be honest though - it's my favorite part of the video.

redrain85 Wrote:And then the look and the humor of Mr. Weed (should I be calling you that? ) is so different and refreshing. The 8-bit look is great! You and Sketch did a fantastic job. No more mistaking it for the Matrix, this time.

Mr. Weed?

No, don't call me Mr. Weed, but feel free to refer to Weed Killer as that... or Mr. Killer, or double-oh eight-bit. I'm not Weed, I just play him on TV... er, on C64. I get what you mean though.

redrain85 Wrote:Once more, I'm amazed at what you've pulled off on the hardware and software you have. From what I understand, it's not all that up to date or the latest and greatest. Thank you. I'm amazed at what I've squeezed out of my tools as well. With all the roadblocks in the way and crashes and limitations, and glitches (unwanted glitches that seem to have no reason to be there, but must be worked around), and looooooooooong video rendering times... I'm amazed each time I finish a project.

Now, if I can only work on my performance Was't really happy with my performance, but worked it as best I could. Hard to perform AND be the camera man, AND monitor audio levels, AND remember lines, AND stay in frame properly, AND remember lines, AND stay energetic, AND remember lines, AND not hold the script in frame, AND try to record it without any sounds from the wife upstairs coming through, AND remember lines... whew. Some people can pull off the whole one-man show thing really well. I am not one of those people. But I try to make up for it with some slick eye-candy and decent production values.

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed my silly video and your fellow students enjoyed it as well. I LOVE when people show my stuff to their friends! I love even more when their friends dig it!

It would have broken my heart to have lost it. It may not look like it, but a lot of work went in to that short video. I'm not always sure of what I'm doing, and often have to figure it oout along the way, so it can take a while to figure something out before I can even do it.

Thank you so much for your concept imagery and how-to with the concept I ended up with. I was really struggling with what to make Weed look like.

He he he - yeah - can't leave out the design wizard behind the old-school graphic look of Weed! I put a "." in front of your name to help it stand out just a little better.

You need to be a member to comment so nothing showed up, but I'll take your kind words as a comment/compliment here.

What I mean by that (people not commenting) is that after speaking with a few people, I started to fear that people may not be commenting because of the somewhat gross nature of the comedy bit. There were a few people in particular at YouTube who I communicate with from time to time, who had been asking when my new Weed Killer video would be ready AND they requested that I send them a message letting them know when it's uploaded. I did just that and... nothing. Maybe they didn't like it and just had no comment, and that's ok, but I'd hate to think that it may have grossed them out or upset them because I talk about such an absurd form of entertainment like that. Oh well. Most of the feedback has been good. I understand that my offbeat sense of humor may not be to everyone's liking. No problems with that. I just feel like I weirded out some people who (used to?) dig my work.

wwwmwww Wrote:[Great work as always... I wish I knew how to do this stuff. At the moment I don't even have the time to work on simple still frames... let alone animations. I was always a big fan of Max Headroom (Hmmm... anyone know if that series is out on DVD?) and I hope to see more of weed.

Max Headroom ROCKS! I don't think they've released it on DVD yet. I'll be picking up a few copies when they do. One for me, and a couple others for people I think may dig it (who were too young when it was on TV).

I like the look of Max Headroom better too. Max being a high-tech 3D rendered talking head is what originally drew my interest - I didn't know at first that he was NOT really rendered in 3D graphics! They FOOLED me! But not for long. Still loved him after I knew the truth though.

The way they did it was very simple... well, simple for a Hollywood studio. It is simply actor Matt Frewer in specially designed latex makeup to look like Max. He wore a shiny fiberglass suit (that ended at the lower chest). His entire head was covered with the makeup - to look like that. I believe he even wore false teeth to look all perfect and white like that. To top off the effect, the actor in makeup was shot against a blue background, which was replaced by a real 3D rendering of colored lines rotating about. So, actor in makeup in front of blue screen, add some real 3D graphics in the background, very creative editing and vocal synthesized effects, and there you go - Max Headroom!

Since I could not recreate the look of Max (3D graphic look), I had to come up with something I could create. So, I went for an old-school graphic look, using graphic alterations to make my own image look like it may have been generated with an old early 80's computer - all pixilated and color interlacing and all. Sketch really came up with that particular look - I liked it a lot! But that is why I show Weed getting loaded up on such an old computer like that - trying to sell the look a little mo

Thanks!

The noise the disc drive makes in my video is not the actual noise - it was to quiet to pick up on mic, so I had to use an altered motor noise rather than silence. Not very authentic, but I thought it needed to make some noise.

The "Got Weed?" thing is meant as a spoof on "Got Milk?". I sounded funny to me, and I think people will get that it's not a pot reference, although it does have a good pun chuckle in there because of it I think.

It wasn't until "crack" was noticed in the background that I became a little worried that people may think I'm trying to promote illegal drug use - WHICH I AM NOT. The guy at work who told me about the other word, also pointed out more. I never figured that random text would generate such potentially problematic words. Oh well. I doubt much will come of it - it's not like my video work is hugely popular. You have to be REALLY popular and well known for people to pick you apart on that level, I think. I can just hear what idiot shows like "20/20" would say about my video:

"And what's up with this "Weed Killer" character? He's an obvious Max Headroom copycat who seems to be trying really hard to promote drug use via subliminal messages in his videos. Even his name implies the use of marijuana. He may put on a silly, candy-coated show, but he may be sending YOUR kids the wrong message. Do you really want your kids learning things from this kind of lowbrow and suggestive form of entertainment?

Research says that you should make sure not to let your kids watch these flashy-looking, but shady internet videos. Stay tuned to our show, and we'll tell you exactly how to handle things like this, beginning with a campaign to ban such hideous videos from the internet and make the internet safer for your children..."

Yeah - something like that.

But I'll never make anything big news shows would take an interest in, so I think I'm safe.

I really appreciated that and commented back (in the YouTube comments).

I felt bad as soon as I saw your comment too... all I could offer you in the video was some C64 visuals (which I'm so glad you enjoyed ) and then a weird-looking head saying... what? Sorry about that! Subtitles are so time-consuming to add, that I rarely do it, except in very short things. I'm going to PM you a transcript...
