Greetings, Programs.
Now, we know what the letters T, R, O & N would look like in the Tron "font". Now, I'm wondering, is there an official font that Tron fans use / follow? The SECTOR page name looks legit. Were the S, E & C from an official source (like the 20th Anniversary DVD) or were they an extrapolation? [I like them quite fine, to be honest.]
If there IS a Tron font, is it available online?
Speaking of the 20th anniversary DVD, were the sections & menu titles from an accepted "Tron font"? [Generally accepted by the fans, I mean.]
Best wishes,
Jayce

DaveTron,
Greetings, Program!
Thank you so much for that info!
I'm planning on saving that file to my computer at home for use in my Microsoft Word.
The archives. I'm going to have to poke around in there to learn more about what's saved in there. Is the file that proves Flynn created all those games in there, too? ; )
Again, much obliged.
Best wishes,
Jayce

Syd Mead made the font for TRON. Syd's original drawing for the Numerals was posted here:
http://www.tron-sector.com/gallery/show.aspx?ID=1320
However I can't get it to load now. My first image here:
http://www.tron-sector.com/forums/default.aspx?do=top&id=296980
Was made from his drawing. I've been told Syd made a similiar drawing for the letters but I have yet to see it surface.
The TTF font Dave pointed you to is nice but I don't think it's Syd's original font. First off the numerals don't match. My guess is that its a fan made font.

Carl, your level of knowledge on these topics never ceases to amaze me! Did you ever find more detail about the number changes or the original alphabetic font?

No... not really. I'd guess the numeral changes were made by the modeler at MAGI and not Syd but that's just a guess. As for the original font of the letters DaveTRON at one point in time thought he had a copy. To my knowledge he hasn't been able to find it and I assume its also possible he's confusing it with something else he's seen and maybe Syd never made a full font. I'm not really sure.
Dave, I assume you are going to see Syd on the 23rd. If so could you ask him if he designed a full font for TRON or if he just did the numerals? If he never made the letters atleast I'd know to stop looking for them. If he did make the letters maybe he'd offer you a copy incase you can never find the one you think you already have.
Just a thought...
Carl

I agree the font under the archives isn't very true to the rules set forth by Syd's notes.
After studying Syd's instructions and seeing how the characters were created, I designed a full Tron alphabet, which I feel is accurate to his guidelines. Unfortunately, I haven't scanned them into the computer or re-created them in Photoshop yet; but I should...
I'd be curious to know how Syd likes them, actually. Oh well...
Regardless, I'll try to get my Tron alphabet into my computer sometime over the next few days for your review. Here is an image I made using my alphabet:
http://img151.imageshack.us/img151/5977/sydmeadfromjeffking4wa.jpgEDIT: Link updated. The Angelfire.com link wasn't working. Note to self: Angelfire sucks.
All the letters in this pic are originals I created while sitting with my sketchbook at a restaurant table with no reference materials except for Syd's examples. If they are the same as anyone else's attempt at letter designs, its purely coincidental. (Note: I know I've since seen the "M" used by others -- and those others probably had it created before I made it -- but that's a pretty natural path to take in the design of that letter; so it's hard to be original with that one.)abortion pills online abortion pill online purchase cytotec abortion

I like the original 1, 4, and 5 too. It sure would be nice if someone going to Syd's review could maybe ask if he did actually make an alphabet, as Carl mentioned.

I had never seen this Rules sketch created by Syd before for the Numbers, I took a quick stab at a full type set. You guys are right. the "TRON FONT" does not follow Syd's rules. I ran with the old font a bit and modified a few letter. We should toss around different letter styles and create a new type set.

Here's the font/alphabet I designed back on July 15, 2005. Wow, I can't believe it's already been a year! Time flies!! (too quickly) I had them all on paper until tonight, when I re-created them all in Photoshop...
I think my "X" kind've resembles a grid bug, which I think is funny
If anyone uses the design of any of the letters (except T, R, O, N) for anything, please give me credit and let me know if you do so I can see what they look like in your creation. Thanks! Again, I designed these based on the guidelines set forth by Syd Mead when he created the font for numbers (linked by wwwmwww above).
Above is my official set. But here are some slight alternatives (rejects) to a few of the letters. The "B", "I", "J" and "L" were thickened up to match the standard TRON "T", but then I reverted back to Syd's instructions and examples and I didn't think Syd would've made any of the letters thick if he were to make an alphabet based on his instructions.

LOL, Zook - looks like you beat me to posting an alphabet by a few minutes Good job on your alphabet; I really like your letter "B"
EDIT: Holy freakin' moly! I can't believe you and I presented the alphabet in a very similar manner where we had the exact same number of letters on each row! WTF??? I just did an array to sketch out the letters (26) & the # 10 = 6x6
I had the idea to sort out the 2.0 font a while ago. You guys pushed me to motivate on it. Here's the start. (I jazzed it up with a drop shadow for you Traahn. )
the B is snagged from the org. TRON font. I really like some of your letters though the E & F are pretty dope. I put in some varients for the 4, X and Y this time...

Greetings, Programs!
Great artwork, guys! I, myself, was thinking of extrapolating my own Tron font from the T, R, O and N. Y'all did some nice work already.
DaveTRON,
I tried downloading the Tron font from the Sector archives. However, my computer had complications so I had to cancel the operation. I'm going to try again tonight, though. [It's 2:42 a.m. Hawai'i Time on Wednesday - July 19th, 2006.]
Anyhow, I was wondering if I could 2nd wwwmwww / Carl's humble request. [Are you really going to see THE Syd Mead soon? AWESOME!] If you could ask Mr. Mead if an official Tron font exists, I would (we would) love to know this. I'd be most grateful.
I'll go do some homework. I'll go check out the 20th Anniversary Tron DVDs & see what letters were used in the menus, etc.. I wonder what the DVD producers used as a guide for their font..........
Best wishes,
Jayce
P.S. Do you think Mr. Mead would share his official Tron font with us fans?

Greetings, Programs.
Okay, I did my "homework" (at least the first part of it).
At least, at first glance, this is what I found:
The words that can be seen in "Tron font" on the DVDs are as follows.
Disc 1
SNEAK PEAKS
AUDIO COMMENTARY
SET UP
Disc 2
DEVELOPMENT
DIGITAL IMAGERY
MUSIC
DESIGN
DELETED SCENES
PUBLICITY
MENU
Keep in mind that there is also a "Making of Tron" section of the DVD but, when I clicked on it, the DVD took me *directly* to the Making of Tron featurette (behind the scenes film). It did not have sub-menu. Now that I think of it, I should have watched the featurette until its title showed up to see if the font was used there. My bad.
It's late here so I'm going to turn in BUT I can figure out what letters are still missing from the alphabet IF we consider the 20th Anniversary DVD to be the "official" font. It may NOT be official, however. I guess that's for Mr. Lisberger to say.
Best wishes,
Jayce

I'd have to look again, but if I remember correctly, I don't think the font did a very good job of following Syd's template/advice.order abortion pill morning after pill price where to buy abortion pill

Your 4 above is an upsidedown 7. If you look at Syd's notes it shouldn't be.

I doubt Mr. Lisberger had much say in something like the font used on the DVD menus but I don't know that. Personally I'm a big fan of Syd and what I personally want is his font. Note even some of his numerals were changed before they appeared in the film but to be honest I like the originals more.
I'm curious... I know Syd did some work for TRON 2.0, the new light cycle design being one. Was he involved in the making of a new font for TRON 2.0? If so that would be very interesting to see as well.
By they way, there are probably what I'd consider 3 official tron fonts. They are these:
The first logo appeared on cast and crew clothing as seen here:

thanks Carl, I fixed it.
I just remember to check this typeface out again... look very familar yes? Follows sort of the same rules SYD set up. It is by a designer named Nando Costa.

Cool font... Definately influenced by Syd I'd say. It took me a while to read the "Diagram of Suburban Chaos" in the very faint text at the top of that image. I was at first wondering why he didn't use an upsidedown 6 for his 9, then I spotted he'd already used that for Y.
