I'm going to see it on my next day off. I'm looking forward to seeing how it continues the story from Superman 1 & 2.

I just heard that they took out "...and the American Way" out of "Truth, Justice, and the American Way" (which are the things that Superman stands for) on purpose, supposedly for marketing the movie to the world. That's total BS. EVERYBODY knows that Superman stands for Truth, Justice, and the American Way. It ticks me off that they want to downplay his roots as an American superhero. He's a midwestern farm boy for crying out loud!
Now I'm kinda on the fence about seeing it. I'm not in the habit of supporting this liberal PC crud, but it is Superman.

Yesterday, my mom was all "Are you going to go see Superman Returns with your dad" and I said "I dunno...probably" and she asked "You want to see it with me, too?" and I said "Okidokee."
So I get to see it TWICE! HAHA! ==

They didn't use that in the Christopher Reeve versions either.

Sure they did.
Watch the first Superman movie; the part where Lois is interviewing Superman on her patio. She askes him something like "Why are you here?" and he clearly answers "I'm here to fight for Truth, and Justice, and the American Way."

I know he says it, I'm just saying they didn't use it to market the films ever.

What I'm saying is that they edited the classic phrase so the movie would play better in other countries, and that's just wrong. Nobody tries to gloss over the fact that James Bond (for example) is in Her Majesty's Secret Service, right?
I have not passed judgement on the movie by any means. I can't do that until I see it, of course. But I am very annoyed that it appears that the film makers may have chosen to eschew the character's ingrained connection to America to make him more PC; this kind of stuff is insidious.

No one is saying that they did, but that's really not the point.
The main point is that Superman is just about American as apple pie or baseball. I'm not saying he used that phrase in every last comic, or in any of his other movies, but it's certainly part of Superman's mystique. Just about every person in this country knows that phrase :^).
Plain and simple Hollywood stripped that phrase out purely for profit. Superman will be playing in dozens of other countries by this time next week and you can rest assured the rest of the world would be uncomfortabe in their seats hearing that line. Why the rest of the world hates us is another story altogether, but the simple omission of 4 key words really is a big deal to some. In the end should any of us really be surpised that such a thing could happen? If they [writers, producers, etc] knew the movie would gross a billion if they turned the character gay and deaf, rest assured it would happen.

Deadly Disks Wrote:To me it was kinda slow and overly long. I felt like they could have told the whole story in half the time. When I saw the explanation text at the opening, I said to myself, “Uh oh. The writers haven’t done their job if they have to give me a pre-game speech.” Batman Begins didn't need that. All the backstory was added in between Wayne's training; and it was a richer film because of it.
I was underwealmed. I felt they could have done so much more with it. As it was, I was kinda like, “meh.” I guess with all the good super hero flicks that have been thrown at us recently (Batman Begins, X-Men 1&2, Spidey 1&2), there’s bound to be a few mild let-downs (Superman Returns, X-Men 3) and a few sucktastic ones too (Fantastic 4, The Punisher).
Ghost Rider looks weak (can anyone say Spawn rip-off?). I hate Nicolas Cage as an actor. Spidey 3 looks cool though. I hope they kill M.J. and Spidey goes off. I want to see him in a total rage. |
I agree Spider-Man 3 looks very cool, and I'm a bit more optimistic about Ghost Rider. G.R. was around way before Spawn, so if there's any ripping off being done it's the other way around. I like Nick Cage's work, and I've heard he's a G.R. fan so I'm hopeful it'll be good. "We are, after all, not God." - Cmdr. J. J. Adams "C is for cookie. Man...Spawn was a terrible movie. Awesome comic and cartoon, but HORRIBLE MOVIE! It was all "OOH, I'm a Demon! I shall blow stuff up now! WEEEEOOO! Look at me, I am soooo scarry with my glowing eyes and blowing stuff up. Now I have guns! And an annoying little kid! YEAH!" (End of mockery)
I was very dissappointed in that movie. the only good thing about it was his cape. The cape was cool.where to buy abortion pill ordering abortion pills to be shipped to house buy abortion pill online

I'm chiming in on this a bit late, but I fully agree with you, MutoidMan. On your earlier post, and this one.
Weak, VERY weak. I'm saddened to see what some people think and believe about this great country we (and they) live in. It ain't perfect, but it is such a beautiful country with so many good things, opportunities, and good people. Beyond that, I must hold my tongue. TRON-Sector is not the place for this kind of talk.
But for what it's worth - I believe in the American way. I can't believe so many people have forgotten just what that means these days (especially the major news organizations)! Ok, shutting up now.
Back to Superman Returns!
Funny - almost every review I've seen (on the net) and read (again, on the net) has been along the lines of disappointment. I'm getting that people think the film could have been so much more, but it fell short... BUT they still enjoyed it because it was Superman.
I'll probably check it on DVD later.
