I have not passed judgement on the movie by any means. I can't do that until I see it, of course. But I am very annoyed that it appears that the film makers may have chosen to eschew the character's ingrained connection to America to make him more PC; this kind of stuff is insidious. |
Again, I think you are creating friction where there is none.
Superman has always lived in America, but he's the classic refugee. He's not one of us, but he lives among us. He's a citizen of the world too. He doesn't just defend the US, he defends the whole planet. I think trying to make him ONLY American goes against what he's about.
I have read the comics for many years, and Superman has never come off to me as Mr. America in any way. That catch phrase was used pretty sparingly and isn't really part of his lore today in my view.

I agree. It reminds me of a quote that goes something like this: "I'm not a citizen of Rome, or Italy -- but of the world."

That's total BS. EVERYBODY knows that Superman stands for Truth, Justice, and the American Way. It ticks me off that they want to downplay his roots as an American superhero. He's a midwestern farm boy for crying out loud!
Now I'm kinda on the fence about seeing it. I'm not in the habit of supporting this liberal PC crud, but it is Superman.
Dang! |
You know, I think there might be something to explain this: When movies are being marketed to overseas, they attempt to make it friendly to other countries. It's been going on since forever like DaveTron mentioned that the phrase wasn't used in the old movies with Christopher Reeves in it.
James Bond might be different but I'm not quite sure why. Have you guys ever seen anything in the movies that would actually offend people from other countries? (I'm not sure but I wonder if they started being politcally correct waaaaaaaay before the 90's... maybe 70's?)

In my opinion:
Superman is an American.
According to the comics, when Superman ran for President he revealed his origin to the public and the question of his birthplace had to be examined in order to detemine whether or not he was able to run. Scientists examined his capsule and determined that he was born here on Earth in the United States, making him a natural-born US citizen. He is, therefore, an American.
His place of birth isn't the only factor. Superman wasn't just born the compassionate and caring hero we all know and love. The Kents taught him to be the hero he is today, and I don't mean that they tutored him on the finer points of using his powers and abilities. They gave him his morals and values; middle-American morals and values, to be precise. Without those, he simply isn't Superman.

You know what Mutoid Man, to an extent you are right, but let me lay a small thought on you.
You call those values "American". Home, family, security, love, etc. Do you really think those are uniquely "American" values? Do you really think those are not the values of all decent people around the globe?
I know people from Russia, Iran, Africa, England, Australia, India, Sri Lanka and Poland who have those same sort of values, lacking only one small thing. They didn't get them living in America, they got them living in their own countries.
Americans have the arrogance to think that we have some special lock on small town, down home values, but we don't. They can be found everywhere in the world. If you ever get out here to LA I can introduce you to these people if you like.
I am not at all saying this to put you down, just trying to broaden you perspective a bit. I too am a proud American, but I live on Earth and my true loyalities are to preserving our planet. Alright, I can see this conversation devolving into one about politics and world views, and from what I gather I think I can assure you with a fair amount of confidence that as far as yours and mine go, never the twain shall meet. So as Todd so succinctly put it:
TheReelTodd Wrote:...I must hold my tongue. TRON-Sector is not the place for this kind of talk. |
I do find the "broaden my perspective" thing a little condescending, however. I have lived my entire life in the most ethnically diverse county in the country, and I have made friends with or gone to school with or worked with or at the very least interacted on some level with people from just about everywhere. So I'm fine on that account, thank you.
I could go on, but then I wouldn't be holding my tongue.
Back to my original gripe.
I still say that "globalizing" American comic book characters is stupid and pointless. Superman's origin clearly paints him as an American. Why change his origin to pander to the politically correct when everyone around the world who likes him knows his origin and yet still likes him anyway?
I would say why not have the UN put together a committee to invent a comic book character (a la the EU creating Captain Euro) to fill the apparent void that people are trying to make Superman fill, but then I remembered that there is already such a character.
The Martian Manhunter is from Mars, and he's here protecting the people of the Earth. As far as I know, his origins have never involved any deep connections to any particular nation so he's the perfect international hero. Like Superman, he's not human, but unlike Superman, he doesn't happen to look caucasian, so he can't possibly offend anyone with his appearance. Also, he grew up on Mars, so his are Martian values and ways of thinking, whatever they might be, and again can't offend anyone. The only thing I can think of is that he was created by an American comic book company; but that can be whitewashed somehow, I'm sure. "We are, after all, not God." - Cmdr. J. J. First off, I am not looking for a fight, I am looking to have an intelligent conversation. It doesn't need to devolve into a fight in any way.
I agree my comment was a little condescending, however, so are some of yours. Read your notes.
I am just saying that you can't look at Superman as a uniquely American icon anymore. He's "of the world" and I think that is for the better, not a detriment. We disagree on that point.
Based on this conversation, I don't find you to be that diverse in your opinions, but that is simply my opinion. If I knew you better, I might see more, but from what you show you seem a bit closed minded.
The fact that we can't discuss this openly in a public forum is disconcerting. People are so completely attached to their POVs that they'd rather retreat to safety than have an open discussion and try to steer clear of arguments. It's kind of sad.
I know we've had political debates devolve in the past. I've been right there in the midst of them. Started and stopped a few myself.
I just found this to be an interesting topic. You tossed it out there, and now that it's just getting interesting you want to drop it.

Let me pose a scenario:
Superman is floating high abocve the Earth. He sees a man about to fall to his death in NYC, and at the exact same moment he see's 200 schoolchildren in Iran about to be killed by a landslide.
He can get to either in the same amount of time, but can't save both. Whom does he save?
Let's see if we can have a civil discussion of what Superman's moral compass requires of him.
Keep your responses thoughtful, let's not turn this into WWIII please.abortion pills online abortion pill online purchase cytotec abortion

Ah, but none of my comments, whether or not they were condescending, were directed at you; that is of course, unless it was you who made the decision to globalize Superman.
Look at my posts. I never said anything about you or made a judgement about you, based on your position, did I? No. Your comment was directed at me. You made a judgement about me because I don't agree with you or think the way you do.

Correction, I made a judgement based on what you said. I find what I have seen so far to be closed minded. I never said you had to agree with me.
Your general attitude towrds those who don't agree with you is condescending. Not directly, but overall. You are gleeful with those who agree with you and sullen towards those who don't. Very condescending in my book, but I really don't give a crap about that.
It's the idea you put forward that I want to discuss. This isn't about either of us.
If you are not willing to discuss and defend your opinion in an open forum, that's fine too.
I feel like talking about the idea, not you specifically, so I am trying to change the parameters to focus on the idea of Superman as Global Citizen or American Defender.
I really don't care about the Mutoid Man part of it unless you feel like discussing personal values too.
I want to talk about why Superman has to be "American". Let's get into that.abortion pills online abortion questions cytotec abortion
