I for one am jumping for joy over this. I'm definitely a Star Wars fanatic/purist and have been wanting this for some time. Even though Lucas film had stated they would never release the original unaltered versions of the film, most of us knew it was a matter of time. I can't knock 'The Maker' George Lucas for taking another stab at the cash cow on this one  . I'm just glad I didn't purchase that *terrible* DVD release last year ^_^.

Yeah I think it's very cool of them to have both versions of each film, that way purists can have their fix and still get to see what Lucas changed. Best of both worlds, really.

I bought my copy of the original Star Wars today… and WOW. What a difference from the hacked up 1997+ version(s).
You know, I bag on Lucas and Star Wars a lot based on Episodes 1-3 but Criminey, when you see the original you remember the genius that was Star Wars at the time.
Definitely get the new DVD if you’re a retro geek like me. You’ll love it!
EDT: I have compared the “new” version with the old. And yes… the “new” version does have better quality film and sound, BUT I still prefer the “crappy & old” film and original story.
Who knows… maybe someday Lucas may actually like his original story as much as the rest of us do, and upgrade that version. I won’t hold my breath.

Today I splurged and bought all 3
If you get them at walmart, they have a bonus pack that also includes the comic adaption for each of the movies...pretty cool stuff.

I'm not sure if you're kidding, here, but they most DEFINITELY do not have the same middles and ends. The first DVD release was the most hacked up versions to date and I will NEVER forgive Lucas for inserting that wanker Hayden Christensen at the end of Return Of The Jedi (among other things).

I'll get it soon. Can't help it, I'm addicted.
I have every version (VHS and DVD) that's been released since the original 3 pack VHS with the updated box art released many years ago. I won't count how many versions of basically the same 3 movies I have, because I feel so geeky.
I agree with most posters though, the DVD edition released last year is the 'worst' release yet. A little too hacked up. My favorite version so far is the THX collectors edition VHS, but maybe this new DVD release will change that.

I wonder what Lucas would do to Tron if he owned the rights to it. eegads! *shudders* I'm sure we'd have the following 5 DVDs for the original movie to choose from.
The final one he'd choose to release, of course, would be the last one on this list. He'd do this as a money-making ploy to get us to buy the first 4 first, with us never knowing if he'd release the 5th or not:
* Tron with all new digital special effects!
* Tron remastered with enhanced Dolby Digital, THX, DSP processing!
* Tron featuring Jar Jar the Tower Guardian!
* Tron with added scenes! including a completely digital CGI scene where Dillinger threatens to pull the power cord on the MCP early in the movie. We learn *this* is apparently why the MCP is so angry at the world. Lucas' main goal with this scene is to make the MCP not look so unprovokedly evil.
* Tron Classic! (the original 1982 version)

I almost bought the new DVDs yesterday until I saw that the original versions are in 4:3 letterbox format rather than anamorphic. Way to screw people with widescreen TVs, Lucas!

The quality of the original versions is horrible! I heard that they made the DVD masters of the original films from previously released Laserdiscs. Stupid Lucas.

So, I buy what I BELIEVE is the ORIGINAL F---ING Star Wars from Walmart online - the trilogy LIMITED edition. That IS what the ORIGINAL films were sold as right? They're called the LIMITED Edition, NOT Special Edition, but LIMITED, right? As in BEFORE Lucas went and screwed with them? Well, THAT is what I bought - the LIMITED Edition.
It came in the mail today.
I put it in my computer to have a look-see at the greatness that was the ORIGINAL Star Wars... just scanned a few scenes... but what is THIS????

But MAN am I disappointed and PISSED!
Can someone tell me what the hell they are calling the ORIGINAL films so that I can take this waste of plastic and cardboard back to the store and order the CORRECT one?
Man, I miss the days when it was just Star Wars. Now there are so many f---ing versions of this f---ing film, that I don't know what the f--- it's called anymore!
And I spent SO much time making sure I was ordering the RIGHT version of this thing.
Man - no wonder I stopped hanging out in the Star Wars forums YEARS ago! Way to ruin one of my favorite childhood films, guys!

Todd, The original theatrical version is on the other disc. The one marked "Bonus". Disc 1 is the redone versions.

Yep...my reaction was similar to Todd's at first (well...maybe not quite as violent....or verbose  ), till I checked out the other disc..it's all good
If you ask me, they should have done it the other way around and put the original version on disc 1, being as they were marketed as being the originals, not the retouched versions.
