Question that's been on my mind since the mid 90's

on Monday, March, 27, 2006 11:30 AM
Growing up I heard all this talk of the events from prior decades.

We have...

the 20's pronounced the twenties
the 30's pronounced the thirties
the 40's pronounced the forties
the 50's pronounced the fifties
the 60's pronounced the sixties
the 70's pronounced the seventies
the 80's pronounced the eighties
and the 90's pronounced the nineties

Currently the music of the 80's seems to be a hot topic. But I digress... lets assume the music of the 80's hadn't come out until this decade and we were talking about it 20 years from now. What would we call it? In other words what decade is this? I always assumed I'd learn once it got here but its now half over and I still don't know. I guess I could type the first 2 decades of any century as the 00's and the 10's but how is that pronounced? Are we in the zeros and will the next decade be the tens? Just curious... I remember hearing about trends and styles of all the decades of the 1900's after the 20's but never heard much about things before that. Is that simply because no one knows what to call the first 2 decades?

Just an odd question I had to get off my chest,

Yes, I believe "oughts" is the previous century's term for it. That seems dated though (Remember Grampa on the Simpsons ranting on about "ought-diggity"?)

We should come up with our own.

"The Nulls"?
"The Oh's"?
"The zands?" (short for thousands)?

Ok, I can buy the use of "oughts" for 00's. And I also agree with Prankster bit that the use of "turn of the century" or "turn of the millennium" should be fair game for the name of the first decade of a century. Now what do you call the second? Are the 10's the tens? Do we call the years 2010-2012 (or 1910-1912) the pre-teens and 2013-2019 (or 1913-1919) the teens?

I guess if you get picky you could refer to 2011-2020 as the 202th decade but I don't expect that to be the common name for it.

Did a search on 'oughts' to see what would turn up. Looks like I'm not the first to ask myself this question.

http://members.cox.net/mathmistakes/decade.htm
Hmmm...

I also had two other questions pop into my head this weekend after watching a program on the discovery channel about the death of our sun. I'm not really expecting anyone here to have the answers to these but I'll throw them into the mix...

(1) The sun loses mass due to solar flares, solar winds, etc. but it also loses mass due to the nuclear reactions at its core converting mass into energy. By which mechanism is the sun losing the most mass? How due these two mechanisms compare in magnitude?

(2) The gravitational attraction between the earth and the sun can take this form (F = m1*m2/d^2). However I’d think the constant solar winds would tend to have an effect. Is Earth’s orbit changing over time due to the solar winds or does this simply change the suns apparent mass in the above equation?

I guess I'm in an inquisitive mood lately... I did go to this web site looking for answers and almost found another question.

http://www.wsu.edu/DrUniverse/earth4.html
(3) What imparts a bigger 'push' on the earth, the solar wind or the "several hundred tons of meteorites [that] enter the Earth's atmosphere every day"?

I however think I can answer that last one. I assume the meteorites come at Earth from all directions so the net "push" should be zero. However the solar wind comes all from the same direction so it should have a net "push". I'm sure that push is insignificant in terms of noticable change in a human lifetime but I'm just curious if it adds up to something significant eventually.

The odd topics that get stuck in my head...
Carl

Thanks for asking about the 00s, wwwmwww. I also figured I would know the correct terminology by now, but I don't. I don't like the "turn of the century," or anything like that, because it doesn't speak specifically to this exact decade we're in. (Such a phrase could only apply to the first couple years of the decade, or 60 years from now, to the first 20 years of the decade. It's not precise enough for me.)

I'm getting out of here right now, and you guys are invited. -----^

don't we say it like it's shown?:

'06 = "oh six"
'05 = "oh five"

etc

so wouldn't it be the "oh's"?

That sounds more like a new hamburger from McDonald's. Not sure I want to know what part of the cow that comes from though.

Damn - I've been wondering the same thing for at least 6 years now!

Short on time, so I just skimmed this thread, but what the hell IS this decade?

Everyone remember's the 70's, loved the 80's and had a lot of fun in the 90's... but what will they remember THIS decade as?

1) The 00's? (pronounced oh-zeez)

2) What about the 00's? (pronounced zands, as in two thousands)

3) Maybe they'll call it the 00's (pronounced Porky Pigs eyes when he said "The... the... the.. the... the.. That's All Folks" at the end of every Loony Toons cartoon when the "OO" in "Toon" became his eyes)

Hmmm, time will tell.

All joking aside, I am very curious about it.

Personally, I've been calling them the "ohs" and the "teens".

But I can see how the first two decades of each century, don't lend themselves to convenient appellation. And I don't think there's any established standard, is there?

About the decades, a good suggestion that I read in a book was the "Oh-Ohs" for the 2000s, and the "Oh-Teens" for the 2010s. They have the exact same ring to them as the other decade names.

As for the solar questions. I honestly have no idea about Question # 1. For Question # 2, yes, the solar wind is slowly, surely pushing the Earth outward. Also, as you noted in Question # 1, the sun is losing mass. In fact, some people think that these 2 things combined might save the Earth when the Sun goes Red Giant a few billion years from now!
