I build the Reco part by part, out of boxes, then tweaking
and adding detail with knife or bevels ect.
Sometimes i build the shape out of points and extrude them,
really depends on the situation.
To get rid of your line in the reco-leg, just merge the 2 polys.
Select both polys and press "Z"
Dirk
EDIT: "Z" for polys, "m" is for merging points |
The approach I took to keep from getting unwanted lines was to start with a line and extrude that into a 3d shape. I got the bulk of my recognizer done in about 1 hour that way. "How are ya gonna run the universe if you can't even answer a few unsolvable problems?" - Flynn in the real world |

Hi there!
Got the reco finished...
Almost....just needs some tweaks,
because some detail is based on a different model
as used in the movie.
(From the bonus-dvd)
Ok, that was the easy part, whats next?
The sailer? tank? cycle? the carrier?....hmmm
I guess i will first build the cycle arena, so i have a
nice surrounding.
Modelling-wise the sailer is pretty tempting,
but the tank looks so much cooler

Greetings programs!
Just another small update on the recognizer.....
Found another small detail i missed on the normal reco
and started Flynns recognizer too.
Crazy, there a few versions on Flynns reco used in the movie....
It will be finished soon, then i go for the solar sailer.

Very nice recognzers Cueball. I'm still working on mine but it's slow going. Here is where I'm at so far...
I'm working from the top down.
Keep up the great work... the look and feel of your renders is spot on.

This is incredible, all the Tron art being cranked out the past few months. Hello Dirk,
I noticed one of your tweaks is adding the cutout on the back. However I thought I should point out that the recognizer with the chest as you have modeled it DOESN'T have this cut out. Check out these screen captures...
Yours looks like a hybrid of what I refered to as shape 1 and shape 3 in the recognizer shape thread. I'm NOT saying that as a bad thing... I just wanted to point it out in case you hadn't noticed.

Hi Carl!
Haha, you got me!
I dont even noticed, that there are some models which dont have the chest......
I mostly based my variant on the blueprint from the bonus
dvd, which have the chest and the cutout.
I think i make 3 versions, since i already made the cutout.
1: flat chest + cutout
2: chest and no cutout
3: same as 2 but the broken "flynn" variant
Thanks for spotting it!

I'm a little confused by that statement. Here is a little gif I made with your recognizer to show what I'm talking about.
On all models I believe the chest slopes outward. However if its modeled with the two lines indicated by the yellow arrows the whole top portion has this slope on the leading edge. If modeled this way in the film it appears the cut out was not present on the back.
On the other hand if those two lines are gone and replaced by the line indicated by the blue arrow then there IS a cut out present on the back. The only difference in the shape of the chest is that now the area outlined in flashing blue is now verticle and NOT sloped to match the rest of the chest area.
Did that make sense?

WOW!!!! Oh I so wish I knew how to do that easily in POV-Ray. Could you tell me how you did this and I'll see if that gives me any ideas?
With my physics background I think I could do this the hard way in POV-Ray but the formuals involving kinetic and potential energy, momentum and interia both linear and angular, is making my head hurt. Just thinking about trying to calculate the moment of inertia of say the head shape by itself is far from trivial. So I'm sure there has to be some shortcuts.

Hi Carl!
In Lightwave3D you have a dynamic-system,
which is pretty easy to set up.
You have complete control over gravity, weight, roughness ect ect ect.... much too much to list.
You just setup the objects, collision ect and let Lightwave calculate the dynamics for it.
I just have to set up the model a bit different, as you can
see, the head is just two parts. But this easy to do, 2-3 small steps.
With this system, i can do the lightcycle-crash-scene too
If i could build the cycle with real csg's it would look perfect
Or shooting some recognizers and the parts will flying off.
(This one i will do for sure!)
There are so many possibilities
