Yep - me too!

Nothing cooler than an original, vintage Atari 2600 with simulated wood grain! It was (and still is) such a great system.

Today's games are great, but there's just nothing like the old-school classics!

Oh crap. I think I'm going to cry. I'm REALLY bummed out right now.

Oh man, I really hope they turn up. That would suck to misplace something like that. I know that feeling… all my Star Wars stuff from the late 70’s –early 80’s is gone. Misplaced or something.

I know you may not want to hear this, but the upside is that the 2400 carts are still pretty easy to come by. Sometimes they are at about a $1 a piece. A local store here sells them for $1 and I picked up some pretty cool ones. If you need me to look for anything just let me know. I know you could rebuild your collection pretty easy with not much cost. Not much consolation, I know… but better than nothing.

I went back down to look nearby... looked in several other boxes... looked in the garage...

Oh man... this isn't happening, it only thinks it's happening...
Heh, not to make light of the situation or anything, but you cracked me up with the bolded line there. I totally heard the movie Tron in my mind when I read that line. We are crazy-weird Tron fanatics, that's for sure.

Anyways, sorry to hear about storage case #1! I really hope it turns up. I have a feeling it will!! Keep looking! Hear the cries of the lost Atari cartridges and find them!where to buy abortion pill http://blog.bitimpulse.com/template/default.aspx?abortion-types buy abortion pill online

No problem. Like I said, you can still click on the file in josh.exe's post. I don't want to make threads difficult to access for anyone though, so I think it's better to leave it silent but accessible.

Hey - that's very cool of you! I really appreciate that - seriously. I'd rather play the same carts (physical carts I owned) that I did 25 years ago because that just brings back more of the nostalgic feel to it. If I cannot recover them, I still want to own at least some of what I had, even if I must buy replacements. I took exceptional care of my carts - most of them are in perfect condition with almost no scratches and no sticker pealing. Only a few of my carts have noticeable wear and tear - like my Pitfall. The sticker looks like someone dropped water on it and it dried - but that's because I loaned it to a friend and I got it back like that. Grrr. That is also one of my missing carts, but I can still enjoy it on my Flashback 2.

Well, even when I'm down in the dumps, I'm still a big TRON-loving nerd and quotes from TRON seem to come out at good opportunities to use them. I'm glad you got a kick out of it.

Missing Atari Cart Update

I woke up this morning, and then I went back to bed.

Then I got up, and started looking around for my lost babies... this is sad, I'm calling them my babies now. Oh well.

After looking in several boxes that I looked in last night... AGAIN, I threw in the towel. I've looked everywhere they could be. There is no place left to look. I spent HOURS, literally.

Then I remembered that my Dad had my Atari and carts for a few years. He returned them to me summer of 2004, and I thought everything was there when he returned them, but I never really did look through to make sure. They sat in storage until just a couple of weeks ago.

Could he maybe have forgotten the other storage unit with the 20 carts still in it?

I quickly called him up on his comm. He was at a restaurant waiting for his breakfast... but I had to know, so I went ahead and started chatting with him about it.

He said he thinks he just might still have the other set of carts! He's not sure, but he thinks he saw them in a drawer at his house a while back and said he'd check when he gets home later.

There IS hope!

Oh man - I can't believe I feel like this.

The time is moving slow... I MUST find out if he has them still!

It will really make my weekend if he calls back with a YES! I don't know when I'll be able to get them from him (weather is crappy right now and don't feel like getting out in it), but at least I'll know my babies are safe and still attainable!

Ok, I really have to stop with "my babies". That's disturbing - even to me!

Well, I have to do some time on the treadmill now. He'll probably call back when I'm on there and I won't be able to answer the phone. But I should know shortly there after!

Oh man - I HOPE he's got them!

MY GAMES MY GAMES MY GAMES MY BEAUTIFUL ATARI GAMES!

Ok, off to the treadmill to put in my five miles. Hate doing it, but it must be done.where to buy abortion pill abortion types buy abortion pill online

Dad just called me back...

HE HAS THE GAMES!

Woo hoo!

Unfortunately, I'm not sure when we'll hook up and I'll get the games. He doesn't exactly live down the street and we're both pretty busy and today, the weather just sucks. After a nice little heat-streak, the snow is coming down good.

Well, at least I know I've still got the games and they're not lost.

I actually had another Atari Pacman cartridge though. I found it in one of the many boxes in our garage. I also found a Sega Genesis baseball game too. I never had a Sega Genesis... and I'm not exactly sure how either game came to be in my possession. It's a somewhat worn-down and weathered Pacman, but it works. I was actually playing it last night after giving up the search then.

Atari Pacman as "Pacman" had to be the crappiest game that Atari ever put out. It was a total piece of crap that did not resemble the real Pacman at all. It was such a great BIG disappointment to me and my friends back in the day. It was just awful.

But Atari Pacman as just another Atari game, not taking in to consideration that it was supposed to be based on arcade Pacman, was a very fun game and got a lot of play in my youth. So last night, I played Atari Pacman for the first time in many years, on my own Atari VCS. The colors didn't show well, probably because of the more than 25 year old RF modulator converter thing, but there it was - Atari Pacman on my own TV again after all these years!

I was bummed that I couldn't find my old carts last night, but I still enjoyed playing it. I played on level 6 - the level I had always played on as a kid. It was the best game setting because the ghosts didn't crawl around so slow on that level - it was more challenging. I think I got just under 30,000 when I finally lost my last guy. That would have been 300,000 on the real Pacman because everything in Atari Pacman was 1/10th the point value for some reason... perhaps the same reason it did not look or play much like arcade Pacman. Anyway, I enjoyed the experience. I didn't use the old Pacman pattern - using that, I can literally play Atari Pacman forever... or until my hands give out.

Ahhh - the old Atari Pacman Pattern. As kids, we used to get pissed off at each other if we caught a friend or sibling using the pattern when they did poorly. It was funny because sometimes people would try and change up the pattern a little to disguise it, but we could always tell. I did the same thing too - I tried to sneak in parts of the pattern when I'd do bad. I always got busted too.

We played "dots" sometimes too. When playing "dots" - you had to play the game without eating any power pills until ALL the other dots (dashes, really) were eaten. It was a fun spin on the game, but it sucked because you could never get any ghost points off that last power pill because it was the last dot and the next board would then start.

A lot of times, I'd play Pacman in B&W mode because it made the game look just a tad more like the arcade version. It got rid of that stupid blue background and even made it a little easier to see the flickery-damn ghosts.

...

I'm not exactly sure why I wrote all that about Pacman. I think I'm just geeking out alone here. Oh well - I'm enjoying it!

Um... anybody here?

** echoing **
here here here...

Oh well.

I don't mind geeking out alone.

Getting back to the actual Atari Flashback 2, I wanted to play Pong with my old Atari paddles, but they don't work so well anymore. About 2 or 3 years after getting our Atari, the paddles started getting shaky and very difficult to control for some reason. Perhaps there was build up of something inside the panning mechanizm of the paddles.

Today, I opened up one of the paddles. I did this more than 20 years ago to fix, but could not. But felt like trying again. Popped out the panning mechanism (whatever the official word for those things are) and it's an enclosed unit. To open it, I would have to bend up the little pieces of metal that hold it together. I didn't want to go there just in case. So I blew really hard on the back side of it trying to get anything that might have built up out of there. I blew, wiped with my fingernails and turned the thing back and forth hard. After a while, I tried the paddle and it was working pretty well again - not 100%, but very close with minimal shaking. After some more blowing and turning vigorously, it played at what I'd say might be 98% accuracy with almost no shaking most of the time.

Put it back together and played some Pong with the paddle. He heeeee! Fun! I played a few games and had a blast, though I didn't beat the computer a single time. It only won by a point or two ususally, but it still won.

Then I remembered that Super Breakout and Warloard were in this thing, so I tried the 1-9-7-2 code to unlock them. It took several times to get it right, but soon the "Paddle Games" selection meny popped up! Woo hoo!

I never owned Super Breakout - I had only played it at friends houses. Not sure why I never got it - it was an awesome game. I literally have not played this game since... probably 1980 or so. Not even on an amulator. I've played the flash version of it (it's actually available on my website if you'd like) but it does not play like the Atari VCS version of the game and only offers the 1 mode of play.

Well, I started plaing the game - the wife was watching while I played. Brick by brick I was working my way through the wall. As I got past the first few layers, the bricks started making multi-noises and the ball sped up. I was grinning ear to ear and getting excited as I wore my way through the layers. My wife asked what happens when the ball gets all the way through the wall. I told her to sit back and find out.

And... THERE! I got all the way through the wall! Weeeeeeeeeee! There goes the ball up and down taking out dozens of bricks and the sounds are all going bonkers as the ball is stuck up top for a while. Both me and the wife were giggling as the ball went wild up there for a while! And then it shot back down... and my paddle had shrunk! Ahhhh! I forgot that the paddle shrinks when the ball touches the top wall. It made us both laugh even harder!

This totally brought me back to my childhood. I clearly remember playing Super Breakout at my younger cousin's house. Me and another cousin (not the one who lived there) were playing it and we didn't know what would happen when the ball broke through. At the time, neither one of us were any good at the game, so it took several games to break through the wall and see what happened. What happened is we laughed so hard is we could barely play anymore. I don't know why, but it caused both of us (both about 10 or 11 years old) to laugh up a storm. It was so exciting and... well, funny. And today, me and the wife started laughing like I had done with my cousin as kids.

I played a game or two on each of the game settings. It was an awesome experience!

Then I went to play Warlords. That is a game that I did have as a kid and was very good at. My favorite mode was to play where each player controls two paddles - one player controls the leftorder abortion pill abortion pill buy online where to buy abortion pill

I loved this part!!! Pure chaos ensued! As for Warlords, YES! I forgot all about that mode where you each get to control 2 castles! And the crazy computer player who sometimes shot himself!! LOL It's all so beautiful. Atari excellence! I loved that. If I remember correctly, it seems like the purple dude was always hard, or harder than the rest?

Well, I'm glad the cartridge mystery has been SOLVED! Good thing your dad didn't toss them carts in the junk pile or sell them at a garage sale! We shall all rejoice now... * Video warriors! Look!!! The I/O towers! Every tower is lighting up!!! *

Warlords was one of the "great" ports to the 2600. However, it was mostly fun in multiplayer mode. One of the great precursors to the MMORPG games that dominate today. I remember Warlords in the arcade!

Naa - it's the blue one... I think it's blue, well, it's the one in the upper-right corner. Purple is in the lower-left corner and is the medium-speed player. Green, lower-left, is slow and very easy to beat.

Haaaaaa! Great quote! And I'm very relieved that my babies... er, old Atari carts are safe and just waiting for me to have at them! I can't wait to dip back in to the old-school fun they hold inside!

You know - that's a good call. Warlords was one of the first games (that I can remember) that allowed FOUR live players to be in the game all at the same time. I only ever got to play against all four (human) players once or twice, but it was a freakin' blast! I really only remember the laughter and some occasional poor sportsmanship (when people lost). We only had one set of paddles, so we had to wait until not only were there enough people for all 4 slots, but also have someone bring over their set of paddles as well. Was great fun though.

And Warlords in the arcade - I only vaguely remember that. I think I may have even played it once, thinking I'd be good at it because I rocked on the Atari home version, but I don't think I faired so well in the arcade version. It seemed pretty close, the two versions, though I believe the arcade version had more detail to it.

** does a quick google search **

Whoa - that looks different than I remember. Again, if I ever did play it, it was a long time ago and probably just once.

Boingo_Buzzard Wrote:Todd, AWESOME that you found the games!!! To have lost them would have been a tragedy.

Thanks! Yes, it would have been a great tragedy. I was seriously bummed when I could not find them, before I remembered that my Dad might still have them. I'm so relieved! I have to hook up with him soon - WANT MORE ATARI GOODNESS!

Space Invaders. I really feel like playing some Atari Space Invaders - on my old Atari VCS with an actual TV set and all! I wish my RF modulator worked a little better, but it's still cool!

Can you believe that when I went to Radio Shack and asked if they had new RF modulators/converters - they didn't know what I was talking about and kept showing me these expensive A/B switches for multiple A/V hook-ups? And of course, EVERYONE who worked there was way too young to remember Atari... well, one guy said "I had one when I was like 6" - but that was as close as I got. Nope - they didn't have a clue. I should try bringing my old one with me next time.

Funny thing is we just got rid of our 30 year old 25" console TV. It was slowly dying, occasionally making popping noises, followed by an odd odor. After several popping noises and a particularly strong odor, it was time to let it go. It was old and very lo-fi, but it worked pretty good over the years and it was sad to see it go. Too bad I never got to play my Flashback 2 on it!

Every time I try to post here, I write a nice long post, hit "reply" and the post gets lost (which has happened to a lot of my posts lately).

This time I'm going to "Ctrl-A" and "Ctrl+C" and repost until it takes!

Anyway...

I've said it before: I love the Atari 2600!

I'll never forget my first Atari 2600 experience was over my cousin's house in the late 70's. She had a six switch woodie (I don't know if it was an original heavy sixer) and we played Combat, Space Invaders and Night Driver long into the night. It was great!

Once I finally got my own Atari in the early 80's, I was totally hooked. I played Atari--yep, Todd's totally correct, we called it "playing Atari"--day and night.

And like you fellas, one of my all-time favorites was Combat! That game had so many variations, it's no wonder it was the game they included with the 2600.

I really liked Activision's Ka-Boom, but those paddles! Man, those things just seemed to break every few months. What's wierd is by their nature, you just couldn't beat on the paddles like you did the joysticks, so I never understood why they were always breaking. After a while, I just couldn't find replacements anymore so I couldn't play Ka-Boom and Breakout anymore. Oh, that sucked!
