Yes - ALWAYS do the CTRL+A, COPY thing. If I didn't do that all the time, I would have lost a zillion long-winded posts! I've been in the habit of doing that for a long, long time.
Anyway...
MutoidMan Wrote:I've said it before: I love the Atari 2600! |
Yeah - as crappy as the graphics were, the Atari VCS/2600 ROCKED!
MutoidMan Wrote:I'll never forget my first Atari 2600 experience was over my cousin's house in the late 70's. She had a six switch woodie (I don't know if it was an original heavy sixer) and we played Combat, Space Invaders and Night Driver long into the night. It was great! |
Yep - I remember the 6 switch version. Before I had my own Atari, I had to play at friends' houses - and I remember they had the 6-button version.
MutoidMan Wrote:Once I finally got my own Atari in the early 80's, I was totally hooked. I played Atari--yep, Todd's totally correct, we called it "playing Atari"--day and night. |
Oh YEAH! There was NOTHING like getting home from school, hitting the Atari, and playing for HOURS! Atari was like pure magic in a box... with a couple of sticks and paddles and a TV attached!
MutoidMan Wrote:And like you fellas, one of my all-time favorites was Combat! That game had so many variations, it's no wonder it was the game they included with the 2600. |
Loved that game! Oh how I WISH I could play it with someone on my Flashback 2 now. They SERIOUSLY need to make some online multiplayer versions of these things. I bet they get just as much online play as any of today's modern fps games! I'd be there playing whenever I could. How cool would that be? Old-school online multiplayer games!
MutoidMan Wrote:I really liked Activision's Ka-Boom, but those paddles! Man, those things just seemed to break every few months. What's wierd is by their nature, you just couldn't beat on the paddles like you did the joysticks, so I never understood why they were always breaking. After a while, I just couldn't find replacements anymore so I couldn't play Ka-Boom and Breakout anymore. Oh, that sucked! |
Actually, my paddles never wore out by play - in time, they kind of degraded or something, but not because of play. I was able to fix one recently, so it works well enough to play Super Breakout and Warlords again! Woo hoo! LOVE those games!
MutoidMan Wrote:To be continued! |
Yes - PLEASE write more. There's really only been a few of us geeking out about our love of the old glory days of the 2600!
Have you gotten yourself a Flashback 2?
If not - I'd suggest getting one. For $30.00 - it's MORE than worth the price. I bet you stay glued for hours... WEEKS even!

Ooooo - that's too bad! Sorry to hear that.
I still have my old Commodore 64. In fact, I came across it last weekend when I was frantically looking for my missing Atari carts. It's in a box, stored away. Even though in a box, it's actually kind of dusty too. I wanted so much to hook it up and try it out again, but there wasn't time.
My keyboard went bad on that thing many years ago. Back in 1989, I remember taking it apart, and putting teeny-tiny folded pieces of paper, behind the little rubber pressure things on the back of the keys so that they'd register on the keyboard sensor things better. It was time consuming but it worked. I haven't had my C64 hooked up since around that time though. I have no idea if it still works. See, Todd, that's what I'm lovin' on the X-Box 360!
X-Box Live Arcade, yo!
You can download perfect, high-def conversions of Gauntlet, Joust, Smash TV and VERY SOON, Street Fighter 2!
You can not only play them multi-player at home, but I have played online with friends!
Yes, I played JOUST online, with full voice talkback the entire game! Same with Gauntlet and Smash TV!
Plus, you can put in your initials (just like the days of old) and put your score out online for all the world to see!
Online Gauntlet and Joust frickin' own!

Old-school arcade gaming online? Multiplayer mode?
That sounds very cool!
That's a great selling point for the 360 too. Heck, if I had the $$ AND some time to play, I'd get one JUST for that feature!
I'm in a HUGE retro-gaming mode lately. It all started with that damn Flashback 2, too!

You know - I thought I might get bored of this thing kind of quickly. After all, it is fun and nastalgic to play, but the games are simple and not very deep... and I only find myself playing the same 5 or 6 games on it.
But after having it for about a month now, I still enjoy firing it up whenever I have some time and playing with POWER!
I know what you're thinking - Atari 2600 games hardly have any power to them, nor did the console itself, right?
But consider this, most Atari VCS/2600 games were ONLY 4kb in size. Some of them were 8kb and some were a whopping 12kb!
Whoa! 12kb!
Come on - it takes more kilobytes than what most Atari 2600 game games are made of, JUST to send a simple modern e-mail!
So you see what I mean? These old-school games are basic, but very fun AND they did it all within the constraints of a 4kb ROM cart!
What can YOU do with 4kb?
Heck, that probably wouldn't even be enough space to hold some of my long-winded posts!
Anyway, I'm still digging my Flashback 2 quite a bit.
It's even drawn my wife in. We regularly play Atari Centipede together (takin turns). This is huge, because my wife is not in to gaming at all. But she'll sit and play Centipede with me for several games back to back - AND she's tons of fun to watch play too! She kind of gets excited when she plays. She even trash-talks the game too! She often yells at the spider calling it a b-tch and a few other terms. It's really very entertaining just watching her play. Man - I LOVE that woman!
But she's not home right now.
Hmm... I think I'll go play some Atari Battlezone.
Does it look like the arcade game?
No, not really. Not many of the Atari games do.
It's actually more colorful, but plays much the same. All you do is blast the tanks and annoying flying saucers... and flying bomber things. But for some reason, it's rather addicting.

Heck, TheReelTodd, your post alone was probably 4KB! So yeah, I know what you mean! The Atari 2600 was pure power. Hmm, Instead of writing that post there, you could've written a new Atari 2600 game! You slacker
No, that's really cool that your wife gets into it, too. Not many females I know like video games, so I know how hard it might've been to coax her into playing even once.

Gotta love BASIC! Do you remember the shortcut commands, like you could use a question mark in place of "print". I liked chr$(127) type commands where you could make little ASCII pictures. And I always like the randomness you could create by putting commas and semi-colons at the end of a print command -- I never did figure out the exact cause-effect relationship of them:
5 cls
10 input
10 ?"Atari 2600 Rules!",,,;,;;;,;;,,
20 goto 10
>run
---
And it seems like adding "poke 16419,0" to the code (on a TRS-80) made the program seem to "hang," where you couldn't hit the break commands to stop the program from its loop (or something like that). We would do that to confuse the unsuspecting

The wife only played it about twice with me. She didn't care for it.
But we just finished a good gaming session of Centipede. Yes, she really loves that game. If I didn't fear her evil wrath for doing so - I'd video tape her playing and share it with everyone. I swear - she's more fun to watch playing than the game itself!
It is cool that she digs the game though. After so many years of her not wanting to even touch a game - who knew - all she needed was some Centipede?

Oh yeah, I remember the C64 didn't allow 'cls' to work. That command "clears screen" on a TRS-80. I remember figuring out what the C64's equivalent was, but can't remember for sure now. I'd have to experiment. I think it was maybe just "clear". You know:

How true, how true.
But you have to admit - it's not just everything old is new again. Those old Atari games were pretty damn fun. Sure - back then they were all we had in terms of video games or gaming if you will. But today - the gaming technology race to have the best graphics ever has clouded people's gaming thoughts so much, that many people forgot all about those old classics.
But that's the thing - they are indeed classics. And just like any vintage classic car, those old games are still great today and tons of fun to play. As a new generation of kids discover these simple, yet amazingly fun games - they too will enjoy all they have to offer.
And of course, for us old guys, it's just a sweet trip down memory lane and a chance to relive some of our favorite childhood memories!

I learned basic on an Apple ][ computer.
My first home computer was a Commodore 64 though - much more affordable than an Apple ][. But Commodore basic was close enough to Apple's so it was an easy conversion with only a handful of commands that differed (in simplest terms anyway).
Graphics were another story though. They were cake on an Apple, but not so simple on a C64. But I got Simon's Basic for my C64 and that proved to be an awesome programming language for the Commodore. Graphics were a snap with Simon's basic and I spent many hours and days, etc. programming in Simon's Basic for my C64. About a year or two later, I blew my college savings on an Apple //c computer - it ROCKED! Commodore had better graphics and sound capabilities, but I was always more of an Apple lover at the time. It was a faster computer and the first system I learned programming on. Plus I had a bunch of friends who had Apple's, so we could swap software and share programs. We were all big computer nerds back in the early 80's! Not much has changed!
Man - the first (and only real) game I ever programmed was an Atari Super Breakout knock-off. In 1985, I programmed a game called "Blockade". It was basically Breakout, on it's side, with the wall on the right side, and the paddle on the left. If memory serves, there were 4 variations of the game, each with the option to play with a paddle, or the keyboard (8 variations in all). I even programmed an opening sequence to the game before the selection screen popped up. Back then - it was some undertaking for me to animate the intro sequence, complete with the word "Blockade" being drawn-in and then a little ball bouncing around in the lower area of the screen. The opening sequence required more code than any single game variation!
Man - I'll have to dig my Apple //c out again sometime and turn that in to a video file to share sometime. The game was programmed in Applesoft Basic and played pretty well, if a little on the slow and predictable side. I wasn't very good programming the physics of the ball, so it always just followed the same diagonal pattern no matter where you hit it with the paddle. But for a 14 year old me (or was I 15?) - that was pretty good, or so I thought at the time.
