Another fine example of how the Marketing folks at Disney bungled. They shipped an Alpha demo to the magazines without tellling anyone as I remember it. (Since josh.exe moved his thread here, which I wasn't really expecting . . .)
LOL. I remember that. It's basically true . . . the Multiplayer demo wasn't that great. It probably gave some people a bad impression.
But the final game didn't deserve it. Its Multiplayer turned out to be much better. (Though it could still use some improvement.)

I can't remember if I got that or not demo. I thought I had gotten all the magazines and stuff that had Tron 2.0 demos, but for some reason I can't really remember the multi-player aspect of things. Probably because I was too busy being enthralled by the single-player demo.
Then later, when the 'gold' version of the demo came out, when it had the opening sequence and credits for the game, I was floored. I watched that thing so many times it's rediculous. Loved it!!
I've mentioned before that I helped play-test Tron 2.0 in a focus group months before it came out, but I've never really gone into details. I had actually seen an earlier version of the opening sequence during testing and it was cool (slightly unfinished), but I was definitely not prepared for the final release version that I saw in the gold demo!
During the testing, I saw a fairly polished version of the game. It showed Jet just being plopped into the Tron universe after the opening credits, without any fanfare or question. Jet didn't react at all. I couldn't believe such a moment, of which ANYONE would be shocked at experiencing, was just glossed-over. During the focus group I mentioned it would be cool if after being transported to the grid, that Jet would just stand there in awe and wonderment as to where the heck he got transported to; looking at himself and his surroundings. Similar to Flynn in the movie. I was very happy to see the final release have this. I'd like to think it was my feedback that caused this change, but somehow I doubt it.
Also during the focus group, they claimed there would be no Recognizers or Tanks in the game, and no multi-player lightcycles or discs. We were all like, WTF? lol. I mentioned there should at least be 'cameos' of the things like Recognizers, Tanks, Grid Bugs!! Fortunately, some were added to the final game. I don't know if they were trying to trick us or what. He seemed pretty serious when he made the claims; so it led me to believe someone at BVG/Disney just didn't respect or understand Tron.
They also showed 3 or 4 different box art designs and had us vote on the one we liked Unbelievably, EVERY ONE in the focus group chose concepts that I thought were hideous box art concepts that didn't capture the 'feel' of Tron at all!! I was like WTF?!?!!! I was the ONLY ONE out of about 12 people that voted for the design that ended up being the final design, or at least very close to the final design look & feel-wise. All the other designs were these hideous red things, or nasty collage-cluttered designs. I remember thinking, "Oh man, they better not let these people who know nothing about Tron decide what the final box art will look like!!!!!" I was seriously going to be sad if one of the other box art designs got used; those designs totally didn't do Tron any justice.
I'm sorry, Dave, if you were personally involved with any of this stuff I'm making negative comments on. I'm not trying to offend.
It was a great experience and I'm glad I got to take part in it!! To be a Tron fan and to be involved with the game pre-launch was an incredible feeling.

I think I've seen that earlier version, in a video clip I have. I actually thought the "travelling down the tunnel" part looked a bit more like the original film, than the final version did. But the final intro is still way cool.

I'm really glad they changed that. Flynn's eyes bulged when he entered the electronic world, and rightfully so! I couldn't imagine anyone else just shrugging it off.

So it was you, that I picked up the tip about lack of Multiplayer earlier in development, from. Again, thankfully all that stuff made it in!

One question. Was the focus group done by BVG, or Monolith (or both)? Sounds like BVG was in charge of it, to me.

I would've loved to have seen the game, as it progressed through its various stages. I have a number of screenshots that show me the game went through many, many iterations before it reached the final version. The on-screen HUD must have changed at least four times, if not more. You can tell that some earlier maps were trashed, too.
But the final product was awesome.

To be honest, I don't know! To me, it seemed like an independent firm hosted it, but it could've been funded by Disney, BVG or Monolith. It was in the Seattle area, near where Monolith is/was based. There were a few Monolith people there, behind a "one way mirror" or whatever they call it. I talked briefly to one of them afterwards... he was an AI programmer. During the focus group, I guess we had commented a lot regarding AI because he said he definitely had his work cut out for him after that meeting

LOL! Oh yeah! I think I remember saying that to you. Boy, it's sure been a while since then!!
RE: the 'travelling down the tunnel" thing, I don't think that was even in there when I play-tested. Either that, or they shut it off. I just remember it going from Jet being laser-blasted to him being in the Tron world. Very abrupt. If there was no 'tunnel' thing, I would've also commented at the time that that definitely needs to be in there. That's something, though, that they were probably just working on separately as a separate module and then just dumped it in when it was time.
EDIT: And I remembered you gave me props for something I sent you a long time ago regarding DEdit. I just checked it out again, and sure enough! Thanks for the thanks http://livingdead.g2gm.net/tronfaq/pages/credits.html
Thanks to the following members on the Official Message Boards . . . (Traahn), for pointing out a potential configuration problem in DEdit that I missed |

I believe the intro sequence I saw was pretty much the same as the final release, just considerably trimmed down. Like maybe it wasn't all built yet. I don't remember it showing Jet playing the Tron arcade or the opening credits, for example. The intro story just wasn't as well built/defined at the time I saw it, mainly because of missing sequences. It was all already probably planned by BVG, it just wasn't shown in the build I saw. Who knows, maybe it was all already built but they just wanted us to see a quick summary of the game we were about to play before actually playing it?

Regarding the video clip . . .
I don't remember where I got it, any more. It was from some obscure gaming site. The clip is a slightly extended and different version of the one where you see Thorne at the beginning saying "Program, I will crush you".
It shows bits and pieces of the introduction, that are identical to what we got in the final game. But right at the beginning, it shows a different tunnel sequence with the actor who played Jet doing a voiceover. Nothing special is happening - no credits, no events - just flying down the tunnel. It looks more like the way it did in the original film.
The clip is a 27 MB .WMV file. I would have to find a way to host it, if you folks want to see it.

Sorry for getting everyone's hopes up. The clip doesn't show anything significantly different from the final introduction, other than the tunnel part.
DaveTRON did indeed upload exactly the same clip that I have.
TRON 2.0 Early Promo
I noticed something else that changed from earlier versions of the game, that I kind of miss. For each weapon, there's a unique idle animation for when Jet isn't using the weapon.
Well, for the Disc Primitive: there was an animation where Jet would spin the disc on his finger horizontally, just like it was a frisbee. But that animation didn't make it into the final game. I guess maybe someone (the testers?) thought it was annoying, and it got removed.

You sure, Redrain? Well, you probably are. I thought the there was an animation of Jet flipping the disc up and spinning it on his finger or something, though. But vertically, not horizontally. Maybe I'm just confused.
But that animation didn't make it into the final game. I guess maybe someone (the testers?) thought it was annoying, and it got removed. |
I did mention in the testing that I didn't like how Jet 'played' with his weapons like that. They didn't just happen when he was idle, which I'd be more okay with. They actually happened while you were running around, doing stuff. I experienced in testing Jet jumping over a cravass and doing this spinning disc animation mid-flight in his jump! LOL. I even think this still happened in the final version, despite bringing it up as an issue. Then again, I know not every issue is capable of being fixed within the time-frame.
There are one or two weapons I refuse to use when playing the game, but I can't remember which one(s). At least one of the discs and one of the rods. To me, these animations seemed corny and unnecessary; especially since they happened while you were playing the game, not just while idle. Yet, the final game had them. I personally didn't really want anything that was remotely 'comic relief' or someting put in there to make it less serious. Those things made it less serious for me. When I'm studying the movements of an AI from a distance, I don't want the animations getting in my view and distracting me. Oh, just reminded me. One of the rod weapons is one I wouldn't use because he would do that silly baton flip back and forth with them. I would try to sneak up behind ICP Kernels or whatever and this animation would play, totally killing the immersion for me. Made me think: why can't the AI hear these loud rods bouncing back and forth? Heh. And when I'm trying to be stealthy? It just made no sense to me.
Oh well. Despite any of these minor flaws, the game still rocked. I was finally able to experience the Tron universe first-hand. So for that, I'm very thanksful!
PS: I just watched that video you posted, DaveTRON. Thanks for sharing. I don't think I'd seen that before, so it was cool to see. I like that it had a similar approach, narration-wise, to the original Tron movie trailer. It definitely wasn't what was played during play-testing though.

That's still there. It's the idle animation for the Cluster Disc. And for the Sequencer, Jet tosses the disc back and forth between both hands.
But the Disc Primitive had him spinning the disc horizontally instead of vertically, and it's not in the final game.
I agree in part, about the idle animations being a bit silly at times. But I don't mind. I think it's a cool homage to Ram. The only problem is - as you mentioned - that you can be in the middle of doing something and it still happens.
My biggest problem is the time it takes to switch between weapons. For Single Player it's okay, but for Derez it's bad. When you're in the middle of a huge fight and want to switch weapons, the game goes through the animations of putting away the old weapon and bringing out the new one. This takes several seconds . . . precious seconds in which you can be derezzed. I always have to try and find a hiding spot where I can change weapons without anyone seeing it, and taking advantage of my temporary vulnerability.
And then there's the fact that you can be derezzed as soon as you spawn in. So all someone has to do is wait by a known spawn point in Derez, and he gets free kills.
But these are minor things that don't take away from my full appreciation for the game. It's the most unique and fun game I've played since Deus Ex and System Shock 2. All three deserve to be remembered as special games.

The spinning disc was in the final game I remmber seeing it all the time over here. I thought I was going to loose the disc primative everytime it was doing that. And I played the game enough since I got it.
