Oops - forgot this one:
spiritquest Wrote:...Its truly quite amazing how technology is imploding and folding in on itself... |
Interesting take on it. I see two things happening.
First, there is a big retro-gaming thing going on. People have been caught up in how cool gaming graphics and realism can get for years now. The old classics of yester-year had been forgotten by many and never even experienced by some of the younger gamers. After a while, people remembered those addictive classic games of the 80's and how much fun they were. At the same time, younger people were being introduced to them for the first time. Just like a great classic and forgotten music, these old games are coming back - because they're so much FUN!
Second, mobile technology, while generally no match for modern computers (desktop and laptop, etc.), has surpassed the processing power of the computers that we used to play those classic games on in our homes back in the 80's. Today's communicators have far more processing power than my old Commodore 64 and Apple //c computers - so why not use that power for more than just making phone calls, and tracking appointments, etc. It just seems logical to pack all the power they can in to these devices - from communications to photography and video, to entertainment, to movies, to gaming... the sky is the limit. Why should we have to carry around separate devices for all of this? I can't wait to see what they can pack in to communicators by the time I'm ready to upgrade to a new model!

The job sounds really cool. I figured you'd be enjoying it on a whole new level since it's gaming but a relatively new frontier of gaming.
I have to be honest. I didn't really think much of mobile gaming until just a few weeks back when I finally took the plunge with my first ever mobile game. I figured I'd play it a few times and the novelty of playing a classic arcade game on my communicator (phone) would wear off.
Nope - I was INSTANTLY addicted! I had no idea how much fun it would be. I catch myself sneaking in games all the time now... and hunger for MORE!

Yeah - I know there are mobile TRON games out there, BUT Verizon Wireless, which is my carrier, does not offer any of them. Grrrr
If I could get light cycles for my communicator, I'd get it in a heartbeat!
Unfortunately my model phone, Samsung SCH-A670, has a limited listing of games that are compatible with it too (compared to some of the other phones listed). When I bought my phone last summer, gaming was not even a consideration. My next phone will definitely have to be able to handle great games AND have plenty of storage space to keep them. The SCH-A670, while a great phone loaded with useful features and a decent camera, only has 2MB of storage for "apps". A few more games, and I'll be all filled up
Another problem is that Verizon is kind of stingy with the gaming thing. Games can ONLY be downloaded via Verizon's "Get it Now" service. There is no connecting to 3rd party networks and downloading games for Verizon customers. You'll have to let me know if your company's games are available through Verizon.

I downloaded the 305kb video you offered, BUT I can't play it. What plays a "3gp" file? Windows media player and QuickTime both fail to play it.
|
You will need the new version of QuickTime player to play it back.
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/ If you've got some video encoding tools, you might have the codec to change it to mpeg2 / wmv or something ? It s a mobile video compressed format. ffmpeg has codecs for this i think ..
I am going to try Pac Man .. you convinced me (It as my very first ever arcade game played!) Gotta have it on my phone
so much technology and so hard to find when you're in a public space and your Tron midi teme tune starts screaming from it..
My phone has an in built radio, which is great for travelling, although you need to plugin the headset, which i uses as an antenna. Add on 64Mb flash disk space, I can play mp3's from the phone, or use them as ringtones ...
Culturally, mobile devices aka communicators have hit home. Here in the UK, at least a year or so ago, there was a high rise in mobile phone crime, a much sought after piece of kit, easy to steal, and easy to sell on.

3gp files are actually H263 encoded video files.
If you have a decoder for h263 for win media, I would imagine that would do it. The new quicktime player includes the h263 codec.
I re-encoded the video into a divx file (jumped the file size up to 1mb)
hehhe -- I bought the Atari Classics Pack 1 for my com. I now have Asteroids / Centipide and Combat !!
Asteroids is very tre to the original, but due to screen dimensions ? The vector graphics we expereinced as hairlines on the coin-op is slightly thicker, maybe for definition .. ? Still an enjoyable and quite fluid experience. My com has a joystick paddle in the middle, so you can control the ship from that as well as the keypads...
I was never hot at centipide, I shall conquer those alien invading digibugs NOW !!
Combat is the game that used to come with the old Atari Game consoles, abit like ping pong with tanks ... there are something lke 14 levels, just as the old cartridge game offerred .. I'm heading down memory lane now ! Ket |

Thanks! I got the video to work. Wow - that's one COOL device! At first I was wondering why you were taking video of your laptop... and then realized it was more of a palm top! That's so cool. You can get TRON-Sector anywhere! I LOVE technology! And your communicator takes pretty good video too (not to mention its loaded with other great features). Mine does not. The video on mine looks more like a slide show because the frame rate is awful. Also, there is no way to get the video off the communicator because... probably because the "video" feature was thrown in last minute just to compete with comparable phones. That's my guess anyway. My next communicator will have great video AND gaming capabilities! But it will be a while yet before I upgrade.

Wow
That's no good.
There was a lot of mobile crime around these parts a while back, but it seems that now, most people have their own communicator. I never understood crime in this arena - once someone's communicator is stolen, they report it to their carrier and it is disconnected. I can't see a thief getting more than a few hours of use out of it. Of course, they could always have it connected themselves, BUT I thought most modern communicators have a built in serial ID that would tip off a carrier service that it was indeed a stolen phone - thus getting them in trouble if they tried to reconnect. I don't know how true that is though... I may be mixing up tech. articles.

I don't think you'll be disappointed. Space Invaders was my first arcade game experience. But Ms. Pac Man is probably the one I dropped the most quarters in because there was a local Pizza Hut near by that had the game. That's an actual photo of my communicator with Ms. Pac Man loaded up - just about to start the game. As you can see, the graphics are pretty dead on, as is the game play itself. I'm sure Pac Man will be just as true to the arcade version as Ms. Pac Man is. Namco seems to put forth good effort in getting their arcade classics respectfully ported to mobile devices. My communicator has a small display screen, so if yours is a little larger, I'm sure it will just look beautiful! The graphic resolution on my game is about half that of the arcade version - but it still looks and plays great! If you were a Pac Man addict back in the day, it will be well worth the money

No Tron games? There's a very easy solution to that: create your own.
The programming languages for cel phones is either BREW or J2ME (Or just basically Java). There are books out on the market that teach you how to build these games. As for getting the game on to a cel phone to test it, there are companies out there that sell kits that will hook up your cel phone to your PC just for this reason. The next thing you might want to look in to to also test your game is (Supprisingly) Samsung's website! They have an entire section and forum dedicated to this kind of thing inculding a cel phone emulator to help you test your games.
If you EVER get stuck, you can talk to me because as it just so happens, I and a team of friends are also in the middle of creating a game too which (Hopfully) will be out on the market soon (we're planning on selling it. Our professor is actually buying us the webspace for it.) I'm in charge of the creative parts of it. ^^

Well... I'd do that, but I'm not exactly much of a modern programmer. The last game I programmed was a knock-off of Breakout and I called it Blockade. I wrote that game in Applesoft Basic on a borrowed Apple ][e computer in 1985. I was never much of a hard core programmer.

Hey - that sounds pretty cool! I hope you and friends are able to complete the game and market it. This may not be a very easy road to head down, but work it as best you can It would be really cool if you all pulled this off successfully! You'll have to keep us posted.

Here is an update on my Space Invaders quality inquiry to Taito Coperation for anyone interested.
After responding to my initial complaint about the mobile game's quality, they requested additional information - mainly who my mobile service is through and how I obtained the game. They wanted to identify weather or not the game I ended up with was really their game or someone else's knock-off of it.
Here was their response to me:
Taito Corporation Wrote:Thank you indeed for detailed information on the distribution source
and your kind observations about the game. We surely provide Space
Invaders through Verizon, and the game you downloaded should be our
original game. Based on your opinions below, we will soon review and
update the game if necessary.
We hope you remain a long fan of Space Invaders.
Best Regards,
Taito Corporation |
Although that response stops far short of saying "we'll fix the game", it is at least a "maybe we'll fix the game..." which is better than nothing. At least they're looking in to the matter and not simply ignoring the concerns of their customer, which I'm sure many companies might do.
As the game is now, I cannot play it. It's sad to see it there in my game menu... just sitting there taking up precious space on my phone like that. But I cannot bring myself to play it in it's current form - it looks like Space Invaders but it's game play is a boring trip down slooooooooooow motion alley and no fun at all. It fails miserably to bring back any enjoyment of my childhood memory of playing the arcade version of the game. I'll always be a fan of the original!
I hope they offer an update to the game. Time will tell.

Which is bizzare because I would think that Space Invaders would have been the easiest to emulate. Sounds like someone dropped the ball and got sloppy, if you ask me.
The GBA updated Space Invaders not too long ago. You can play classic and the new Space Invaders. I like it.

Yes, that's a good point - I also looked at it like that.
The slow motion speed is probably a result of the game being programmed around a system (phone) with a faster clock speed than my model. And obviously, there is nothing in the programming that takes in to account processor speed and alters the frame rate accordingly.
Aside from that - the invaders do not properly speed up as they are shot out of the sky. They only speed up one increment, once about 70% of them are gone. And that is not a very big jump in speed. That last invader that should be marching down at high speed, just kind of moves along at a strut. It's not hard to take him out on the first try because it's slow and easy to gauge exactly when to shoot your slow laser.
And sound? There is none.
The game is very simple and none of these things should have been an issue. Ms. Pac Man and Galaga BOTH play great on my communicator. And both are more complex on the programming end and game play.
Still, I am a BIG fan of Space Invaders even though it is a simple game. I hope they offer an update so I can enjoy it properly any time I want!
