It makes sense for any era, actually.
Take a look at the Iowa class battleships, or Nimitz class aircraft carriers. They built more than one from the same basic design, but there are some differences between ships, especially between the early and late model carriers.
As an aside, for those of you who might be interested, there was a planned Montana class of battleships, a third larger than the Iowa class, with four turrets of 3 16"/50-caliber guns instead of the Iowa's three. So if you ever saw the "Sink the Montana" episode of G.I. Joe, that's where they got the battleship from.
There are usually only one or two ships built in a class when that ship or class is intended as a testbed for the new or improved technologies and/or new ideas that may go into another class of which many examples will be constructed; e.g. the Enterprise class USS Enterprise (CVN 65) which is the world's first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, and the only example of its class.
I get the impression that the USS Pegasus that Cmdr. Riker served on was also the only ship of its class. That ship was the testbed for the technology that went into the Galaxy class design, of which the USS Galaxy, USS Yamato and USS Enterprise-D are (or were as the case may be) examples of.
I agree that it is always cool to see more ships of the same class in an episode, like when you would see more Constitution class starships than just the USS Enterprise in an episode of TOS. It gives you the feeling that this ship and its crew don't just exist in a vacuum, so to speak; an understanding that there is a bigger picture that we just see one small piece of. That's good enough for me." - Cookie Monster "If money is the root of all evil, I'd like to be a bad, bad man." - Huey Lewis & the News

Ahh - a great follow up to last weeks "to be continued" episode!
And, the wife watched it with me again. But she seemed more in to last week's episode than this week's. There was a bit more edge last week, but I thought this was a good 2nd part to what was started last week.
First off, I really think the idiots at UPN really do not like Enterprise at all. It's like they're just trying to sabotage the final few episodes and make it even worse for the already doomed show... AND piss off those of us who enjoy the show.
Last week, the show started off with no video for the first couple of minutes. We could hear the audio, but there was no video until just about 10 seconds before the opening theme played.
This week, there was a frozen UPN screen (I think it was a UPN screen of some sort) that looked like the network was on "pause". What should have been a quick recap of last week's major points and lead in to this week's show was just a frozen paused UPN screen and an audio hum noise, but nothing else. Then again, about 10 seconds before the opening theme, the show was visible, beyond the recap point and in to this week's new material.
Yes, it seems some one at UPN is trying really hard to piss us off and disrespect what's left of Enterprise. Either that, or there has been a really odd coincidental occurrence like this TWO weeks straight. Of course, I don't watch anything else on that sorry-ass network, maybe all their shows start out like that
Ok, time to post using the amazing, colossal, INVISI-TAG!
Spoilers be ahead folks - highlight the text at your own risk of the Klingon virus that'll lead to the dulling of your caranial ridges!
BTW - I used this code for the invisi-tag:
[quotee]<font color="#000000"> invisible text here [/quotee](make sure you only use 1 "e" in "quote" and don't forget the end quote tag at the end)
Well, my prediction of the Columbia meeting up with the same fate as the USS Yamato of ST:TNG was wrong! Woo hoo! That would have been so predictable! In this episode they were setting up even more events that would support the destruction of the Columbia - with Tripp back on Enterprise during the battle with the Klingon ships and all. I even turned to my wife and told her "well, there goes the Columbia", but I was wrong! I'm glad I was wrong - I hate predictable crap like that. BUT, there are still some elements in place to set up the destruction of the Columbia in a future episode... hell, with Enterprise going off the air soon, even it may meet an explosive demise before long. Who knows.
Malcolm has rethought his loyalties and has made his decision to answer ONLY to the captain. Good move, of course, he only made this move after getting played (used) by... forget that guy's name, and loosing Archer's trust as well as much of the key Enterprise crew's. Of course, it seemed in this episode, Archer and crew had amazingly started trusting him again rather quickly. Not very realistic, but given the constraints of the show's time limit (both per episode and the fact that it's history soon), I can understand. Again, I feel they may have explored Malcolm's hard work to slowly regain the trust and respect of Archer and the crew over the course of several episodes, but that whole side-story could not exist for the show does not have "several more episodes" left to it :-( Of course, maybe it was relatively easy for him to regain trust since Archer and T'Pal were able to uncover the fact that Malcolm was under orders from... what's his name. Sorry about my lack of name recall ability - but you know who I mean.
Dr. Phlox was able to save the Klingon empire and without having to do so by creating augments. Augmented Klingons - forget the fact that would have messed up the ST time line, it just would have been a bad scene. I mean, Kli |

I started watching Enterpries in Season1 I had asked my brother to record the eps 2 and 3 which he never did, and it completely spoiled my rhythm for it !
I've dipped in and out over season 1 and 2, but am clueless as to where things are at with it, I must admit, I've been more enthusuastic about Voyager and DS9. I get a gist of the story about the Xindi but i seem to see eps in jumps which is very trippy. Its been many months since i've seen an ep since.
If I get a chance I'll get back into enterprise, based on this thread of approval. But when I moved home in Sep last year, I moved away from cable ... yelp !

Here's some interesting news:
The Digital Bits reports that 4 donors from the aeronautics field have donated $3 MILLION to Paramount to keep Enterprise on the air!
Now, that's pretty frickin' huge, right there! With this, plus all the online petitioners, there may be hope for Enterprise fans yet!

YAY! It's April 15th!
Ok, if you haven't done your taxes and paid your dues to the IRS it may not be a good day for you. But if your taxes are signed and sealed... and you're an Enterprise fan - then today IS a good day to die! Er, I mean that's what Warf might have said. When I meant is that Enterprise was back with a GREAT new episode today!
Ahhh - FINALLY, after weeks of no new episodes of Enterprise, tonight's episode was a good one! And very attractive one as well - nothing like some awesome Star Trek hotties - THREE of them to be exact, to make a good show that much more FUN to watch! Too bad there are only a few shows left before this great series boldly goes where it is WAAAAAAY to early for it to go - the land of cancellation
Ok, spoiler tags in affect - just highlight to read further... but be forwarded, spoilers lay ahead, warp factor mine
Well, tonight's show was a good one - entertaining, fun to watch, good plot, and the feel-good ending every sap was hoping for! Yeah - there was a little sap factor to this shows conclusion, but not too bad. I tend to think of "feel-good" endings as kind of sappy, though I admit I enjoyed this one myself.
The Star Trek hotties - not one, not two, but THREE sisters! Sex slaves no less! I forget the name, but they were those green alien chicks that no man can resist. I apologize for my lack of remembering the names of species and characters at times. Bad short term memory - sorry! And I'm just a little too lazy to look them up right now. But you know what I'm talking about. Man - these green alien females-o-delight have never looked so good (in previous ST series)! I mean - yoooowzaaa! Uh... did I just say "yoooowzaaa"? Damn - I guess I did! I'm such a nerd! These fine ladies were not only fun to watch, they played an interesting role in the show and Star Trek universe in general. I remember in the original ST series that it was mentioned that no man could resist them. I can't remember if this was revealed in other Star Trek series, but tonight it was revealed (or maybe just retold) that these beautiful slaves of sin are not really the slaves, but the slave masters of the men who fall prey to their irresistible sex appeal... and their out-of-this-world pheromones. Their seductive powers are so great - they'll have any man wrapped around their evil little fingers quickly. Sexy and seductive... and very dangerous, these green ladies will have men eating out of their hands and doing ANYTHING they request of them. Even captain Archer falls prey to their seductive powers. Luckily, Tucker and T'Pal are able to keep their heads straight because of a Vulcan psychic bond they share, and they save the day, by saving Enterprise and its crew from the destructive seduction of these "slaves" of seduction.
I found it interesting that the characters (the green hotties) were also in control of the very aliens who supposedly "owned" them. Interesting - so the green alien chicks control their "masters"... who is really in control of their society? Is there a green alien chick leader? Man - what's the name of that group... ah yes - the Orions! The slave traders, the Orions - are the green chicks in control over their whole operation? I would imagine so. I found it interesting anyway.
And the feel-good ending so many people were probably hoping for - T'Pal and Tucker kind of agreed... in their own kind of way, that they had feelings for each other. And Tucker will be returning to Enterprise permanently as chief engineer (big surprise there! ). Of course, since the show will soon be no more - they could have taken this side plot anywhere. But it seems they're going about it in a way that would allow for happier closure as the series comes to an end. Then again, they could still take things in unpredictable directions. One |

Whooooooaa!
Now THAT was an AWESOME-damn episode of Enterprise!
How frikkin' SWEET that was!
Ooooo - I got goose bumps watching it!
Right from the start - I was engaged in this episode.
Boy - they really took me by surprise too!
I don't think this gives away too much, but read further at your own risk:
The episode starts out showing what appeared to be the "first contact" scene from the film ST: First Contact. The Vulcan greeted Zephron Cochran with the "live long and prosper" line and the Vulcan hand greeting. Zephron Cochran greeted the Vulcan with something VERY different what than I expected... and then the intro to the show started.
Shortly after the show intro and the show started back up, I figured out what was going on. Sadly, I had been spoiled in knowing that this kind of plot would soon be explored. BUT at least it was still a GREAT trip because they did this so well!
Why oh why must this show go off the air? It's been KICKING TOTAL ST ASS as of late! Did I mention I got chills watching tonight's episode?
Ok, spoiler tags in effect - just highlight the hidden text in black box to read. SPOILER WARNING - do NOT read further if you don't want to be spoiled!
So why did Zephron Cochran greet the first contact Vulcan by KILLING him? Why was Enterprise under the command of... crap, there goes my memory again... the admiral who was killed several episodes back when the bomb went off on the planet Vulcan. Anyway - the Enterprise hotties were all wearing altered uniforms that exposed their well shaped midriffs. Archer took Enterprise by force from Captain admiral guy. Tripp had radiation burns on his face. Malcolm was exceptionally evil... as was Floxx. Why? Because they were ALL part of that infamous universe that featured Spok with a goatee! Yes, everything in tonight's episode was told from the evil "goatee" universe! Haaaaaa! How cool is that? VERY!
I thought they did an excellent job of showing each character's alternate universe counterpart. Each character retained elements of their "good" universe character, but with notable "evil" universe attributes through and through. Oddly enough, no one in the evil universe had the "evil goatee" But man, this was just a GREAT episode!
To top off the total COOLNESS - Archer and the away party beamed aboard a ship of the same class as the NCC-1701 from 100 years in the future! Tripp revved up the engines on the NCC-1783 (I think that was the number anyway) that had been getting gutted by alien races after being defeated and her crew killed. It was cooler than anything to see the ship being powered up while they were on the bridge... that looked a LOT like Kirk's bridge of the NCC-1701! The look and sounds were just like it was from the original ST series! Oh, what a site to see!
And those aliens that wove the NCC-1701 in a web of laser-like fibers were there too... only this time they spun their web around Enterprise (Archer's Enterprise) and in a very different and more efficient way, but same look to the web.
Well, that's about it. I'm not going to spoil the whole thing... that's enough. The rest just has to be seen to be enjoyed and admired for the greatness that it was!
|
Oh, one more thing. This isn't much of a spoiler, so I'm adding it outside of the spoiler tag text.
The episode ended in my LEAST favorite ways.
Just when the action is getting intense and things are more exciting than ever... so much so that I had completely lost track of what time it was... there they were. Those three words I dread... to be continued.
I yelled out "NOOOOOOOOO".
Really, I actually yelled that out. I wasn't ready for that - time seemed to just zip by. It couldn't have been a whole hour. But it was... and I'll just have to wait for next week for the conclusion of this week's EX

I just finished watching the AWESOME conslusion to last week's episode.
In a word...
WOW
In fact, that "WOW" just wan't big enough.
If you missed tonight's episode and you're even remotely a Star Trek fan... well my friend, you REALLY missed out!
I haven't been this IN TO an episode of Star Trek since Spok joined Piccard and Data on the Romulan home world... or since Sisco and crew traveled back to that Starbase where Kirk was having a little trouble with tribbles.
If you saw last week's episode, than you know this two-part show takes place in the evil alternate Star Trek universe - where Spok has a goatee!
Guess what - there was even an evil universe intro to the show!
Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!
I almost never watch the intro of the show (because I never really liked the intro song), but I noticed that there was different music playing tonight... so I camped there and watched. Not only was there different music, the sequences were all depicting a VERY different succession of events in the timeline up to Star Trek - a very evil and twisted account of war and destruction. I can't believe they put all that extra effort in to JUST the intro! It was SOOOOOO cool and such a treat! What genius! Or so I thought, anyway!
Ok, I don't think that gives too much away... well, not if you've been following the show.
But here go the spoiler tags for a very brief recap of the coolness that was tonight's episode!
You know the drill - just select the hidden text in the black spoiler box to read further.
I'm not going to get in to great detail about tonight's show. It was just an EXCELLENT follow-up to last week's first part. I was like a kid on a heavy sugar-induced excitement trip while I watched this show tonight!
What cool stuff was in there tonight aside from a great story?
Well, there was an awesome looking Gorn - and slightly improved from the version Kirk fought in the original series. VERY cool looking and still true to the general character design - no doubt they would have made the original Gorn look like this had they the technology at the time. He was GC though, and his movements were slightly CG-looking, but that's understandable given the time constraints they have to work within. Very cool looking and very tough!
T'Pal changed in to the standard original series uniform like Lt. Unura's and looked pretty damn hot like that too! Sha-wing! Like Spok in the original series evil universe episode, she saw the danger in continuing down the warpath that the Empire was headed down. She teamed up with... damn - what's his name? The Vulcan she used to argue with and gave Archer a hard time... the one who was the human cop in the Alien Nation TV series... I suck at remembering names and I'm too lazy to check on StarTrek.com. Anyway, HE had the evil goatee! Just like Spok had! Haaaaaa - I was waiting for that evil goatee to show up!
In terms of other visuals... the NCC-1768 (I think that was the number - bad short-term memory) was called the "Defiant" and was the same class as the good old NCC-1701 original Enterprise. I can't tell you how damn cool it was to see the evil crew bringing this ship back to life and seeing them on the bridge and with all the classic visuals and sounds effects... even Majel Barrett reprised her role as the ship's computer voice! Oh man - it was any true Star Trek fan's delight to see this! You should have seen the ship in battle - it was sooooo damn cool! I mean the phasers were true to the original series, and the way battle looked from the bridge also. Only THIS time, we got to see the beautiful ship engage in battle in ways they could not have shown us back in the original series. It just looked soooooooo sweet witnessing all tha |

While the last two episodes of ST:Enterprise were very cool, they did raise an interesting question.
For the sake of those of you who haven't yet seen the episodes and have confined themselves to soundless, opaque bubbles in order to preserve the surprize, I shall type the following in TheReelTodd's patented Invisi-Tag™:
Why was the I.S.S Enterprise that Kirk was on virtually identical to his U.S.S. Enterprise if the Terran Empire had a century to improve upon the design and technology of the U.S.S. Defiant?
OK, so Empress Sato - man, I was so hoping for Emperor Archer - has taken over the Terran Empire thanks to the main-universe U.S.S. Defiant from from one hundred years in the future.
It's easy to understand how the Terrans could've dominated the surrounding civilizations with that kind of technological advantage.
However, the idea that any of the advanced technologies of the Defiant were immediately made available to Starfleet is highly questionable.
Here's how I see it.
Building copies seems like the obvious move, but since Defiant is Empress Sato's greatest advantage, she was probably not too keen on giving a copy to every perfidious captain in Starfleet.
My best guess would be that Sato kept a tight grip on that technology, and that all through her reign as Empress the Defiant remained the lone example of its kind in the mirror universe.
It was probably only after her demise, and possibly after the demise of her successor, that the ship was finally reverse-engineered and reproduced, which would explain why the mirror-universe technology didn't appear to be at a higher level than the technology from Kirk's universe.
Anybody have any different ideas? |

I've pretty much enjoyed Enterprise when I can get around to watching it, which has been nearly impossible. I can't believe how little T.V. I get around to watching anymore. I have to pretty much ration hours in front of the T.V., and Enterprise has pretty much been shelved 'til a later date, perhaps until can get it on DVD.
However, I have enjoyed the formula and the cast.
