Did you ever read his TekWar series? |
Quite a few Trek books!
The Return and Avenger are the last two installments of his first trilogy.
His first trilogy, Star Trek: Odyssey, is The Ashes of Eden, The Return and Avenger.
His second trilogy, Star Trek: The Mirror Universe Saga, is Spectre, Dark Victory and Preserver.
His third and latest trilogy, the name of which I do not yet know, is Captain's Peril, Captain's Blood (which I have yet to read) and the not-yet-released Captain's Glory.
I haven't read any of his TekWar books, thought I would like to. I did watch a few episodes of the TV adaptation, and it wasn't bad. "We are, after all, not God." - Cmdr. J. J. The Aenar
Excellent television. Anotehr great episode. Why is it getting so good now!?!?!?!?! Dammit, why didn't these people who are writing it now have charge at the beginning. These episodes rock.
This is why I watched Star Trek to begin with. Great writing, believable story, didn't end in 3 seconds right at the end. That entire arc was wonderful.
Looking forward to next week, and I hope Paramount is seeing a sudden spike and rethinking their cancellation.
On to Stargate Atlantis. Wonder if will be good tonight?

The Ashes of Eden will definitely give you a better understanding of things in The Return and Avenger.
You're not going to believe how Shatner pulls stuff out of the woodworks and ties it together in the Mirror Universe Saga. Mind-blowing stuff!
His latest trilogy (or what I've read so far) seems to be another winner. I'm probably going to pick up the second book in the trilogy this weekend; if I do, in a day or two I'll let you know if I liked it.

I finished Captain's Blood last night.
Shatner kicked up the danger a few notches with this installment, and in this trillogy has introduced an enemy so powerful and incomprehensible that I really have no clue how our heros are going to extracate themselves from this one.
Bring on Captain's Glory!

It really is a shame that Enterprise got cancelled, considering it seems to take about three or four seasons for the writers to actually figure out what they want to do with a Star Trek show. You'd think Paramount would know that and give Enterprise another season to see if the ratings improve, which I think they would considering that the show seems to have found its direction thanks to new writers.
Who knows, if we get lucky the ratings will improve enough over the remainder of the season for Paramount to change its mind. If not, maybe Sci-Fi will consider killing Stargate: Atlantis and/or the new-but-not-improved BSG to fund another three seasons of ST:E.
One can only hope.
In any case, once ST:E is off the air, I'm done with UPN because everything else on that network is utter crap.
At one point in the recent past, UPN actually had another decent sci-fi show, 7 Days.
7 Days has a pretty cool concept: a secret government agency reverse-engineered some of the technology from the ship that crashed at Roswell and built a time-pod that could travel up to seven days into the past. So with this ability, every time there was a major disaster, deadly terrorist attack, etc, they sent the time-pod back to try to prevent it.
The show wasn't anywhere near as high-quality as ST:E, and many of the episodes were kind of eh, but it was still cool.

Considering how good it's been in recent weeks, they really ought to reconsider, but I bet they don't.
SciFi picking it up would be good though!

Tonight's show was good, but I have some reservations about it.
My wife actually joined me for this week's installment of Enterprise - that was really cool! She has watched all the other Star Trek shows with me in the past, but never really warmed up to Enterprise so I was glad she joined me in watching the show tonight. She really got in to it too, and even got angry when those three annoying words flashed at the end - "to be continued". She was so in to the show, that she thought only about 20 minutes or so had passed and was really caught off guard when it was over. Well, looks like she'll be joining me again next week because she was really in to the show and now she wants to see what happens next!
SPOILER ALERT - DO NOT READ FURTHER UNLESS YOU HAVE ALREADY SEEN THIS WEEK'S EPISODE AND HAVE CONSULTED DR. PHLOX ABOUT THE MEDICAL RISK IN READING FURTHER OTHERWISE

Ok, the whole why Klingons looked the way they did in ST:TOS without the forehead ridges bit. This could have been really cool if I hadn’t already known EXACTLY what to expect in this show as soon as the beginning sequence played. Yes, I was spoiled weeks ago when I accidentally read a blurb on a website about the fact that they were going to "explain the differences in the Klingon foreheads" in an upcoming episode. DAMN SPOILERS! Had I NOT known of this already, I would have more than likely gotten chills watching the show play out. But since I was already spoiled and completely expecting this story-line from the pre-theme sequence, the show did nothing for me. No chills. No amazement. NO SH*T!
Though I'm very tempted to continue how spoilers kill the entertainment value of shows to me, I'll get on to my "reservations" about this show. But DAMN! I feel so cheated. To me, it's like knowing the twist to the film The Sixth Sense BEFORE seeing it. I know - most people just love to know as much as they can about upcoming shows, but I prefer to experience it as it unfolds.
Ok, tonight's show as a whole was a good and exciting episode. Granted I would have enjoyed it on levels I'll never know because I was SPOILED, it was still a cool direction to explore. I mean, this is exactly the kind of thing they should explore in a Star Trek show that pre-dates Captain Kirk and crew by a century. In reality, the foreheads of the Klingons evolved because of the creative process and better budgets for the Star Trek films than the original TV series has. But then there was this unexplained difference in a key Star Trek species. The short answer is technology and makeup effects were better and the "foreheaded" Klingons looked more like the species they were meant to be (if that makes any sense). But to tackle this concept IN the show and acknowledge a reason for this is an interesting thing to do. They poked fun at it in the episode of DS9 when several characters found themselves in the past episode "The Trouble With Tribbles" - I thought their way of dealing with it at the time was great! It was both funny and made that episode of two ST generations coming together great fun!
My reservations on tonight's show was more on the whole Klingon behavior thing. I think this is where I really show my Star Trek geekiness, but the Klingons acted a little non-Klingon at times tonight. I'm not talking about the forehead thing - I mean their behavior seemed a little off in terms of dealing with death and the way "saving lives" was talked about. I can't quite put my finger on it, but it seemed that story elements were slightly in conflict with established Klingon behavior - at least in the way they phrased and deal with it. "Uncle Phil"-Klingon seemed to show mercy for his fellow Klingon and not show the spirited and expected Klingons look forward to a glorious death thing. Sure, he didn't hesit

Damn you Todd. Why didn't you post something to stop me from scrolling down and reading your spoilers?!?!?! Now I know exactly what's going to happen 30 minutes before I get to watch this weeks episode.
Just teasing.
Suggestion. In the future, let's try using INVISOTEXT for spoilers. It's easy to do. Here's and example:
Highlight the section between ****** lines to see the secret.
******Secret information goes here******
To create INVISOTEXT, you need to use a little HTML. In the following example, replace { with
******{table width=100%}{td}{tr bgcolor=black}{font color=black}Secret information goes here{/font}{/tr}{/td}{/table}******

Excellent, DaveTRON!
I like the INVISOTEXT a lot!
But, is it compatible with your mighty POST-O-MATIC?
Perhaps Auric can be persuaded to make an easy forum tag for that in the future? It might get a lot of use, especially in discussions about the upcoming TRON film, and of course, TV show discussions like this.

TheReelTodd Wrote:Oh - and Enterprise's sister ship - the Columbia. In terms of business, its just more cost effective to have two almost identical ships - it's MUCH easier on the production budget of the show as the same sets can be used for both ships, etc. But for some reason, it makes for a really cool premise for me. I think it's cool that there's another ship very similar to our beloved Enterprise. |
Has somebody commented that the Columbia looking identical to the Enterprise is bad in some way?
It only makes sense that the ships are identical or almost identical being that they are of the same class. Of course, we might see a few differences between Enterprise and subsequent ships of the same class as engineers revise and update the class design using information from Enterprise (and now Columbia) about what works, what doesn't work, and maybe even reverse-engineered alien technologies.
I wouldn't expect to see any new classes until maybe the end of a seven-year run of the series. Even then I would think we'd only see some line drawings, maybe some schematics, maybe a model, possibly the beginnings of a superstructure in a shipyard, but not a completed ship.

MutoidMan Wrote:...Has somebody commented that the Columbia looking identical to the Enterprise is bad in some way? ... |
No. I made that comment proactively. I dig the idea of Enterprise having a very similar looking "sister ship". I think that's cool in terms of what kind of stories can be told with that premise, and also in terms of being able to see how two almost identical ships may have very different paths ahead of them (so to speak). And it does make sense that multiple ships might have very similar, if not the same design in that era of starship engineering.
I made the "cost effective production budget" comment because that is a very large part of how things like that come about in terms of what the producers want to do vs. how much it costs to do it. I expected that comment to be made (budgetary decision) if I commented about how cool the sister ship concept and so I brought it up first.
I don't care if it was a budgetary decision is what I was trying to say. I just dig the concept, period I'm looking forward to the upcoming show(s) that feature both ships. The outcome is predictable, but it should be a fun show. Oh - and I hope I’m wrong about the outcome, I LOVE being caught off guard in terms of plot!
In case you are wondering about what kind of predictable outcome I am talking about, think back to ST:TNG, season 2. The USS Yamamto - the NCC1701D's sister ship. Though I'm sure the Columbia will see a bit more action than the Yamato ever saw, I think it's safe to say the predictable outcome will be the same.
Of course, should someone find information that either confirms or disproves my speculation, PLEASE hide any comments using the invisi-tags or at least post a SPOILER WARNING before posting anything about it
