I admit I've watched TRON a bajillion times without "pinging" in here, but today is special because I watched it for the first time on my iPod!
Now I can take TRON with me anywhere! Woo-hoo! |
Sounds cool!
It gives new meaning to taking a little TRON with you on the go!
You really should try PINGing in every time you watch it, MutoidMan!
I haven't PINGed in a while...
I'm sooooo overdue for a good dose of TRON, it's not even funny.
Funny, with all the daydreaming I do about TRON this and TRON that every day, you'd think I'd be watching it a lot more often! Haven't watched it in a while, but ALWAYS thinking about it! And of course, I LOVE hitting the game grid with TRON 2.0's light cycle multiplayer mode!

PING
With my parents away on vacation, I finally got to watch on the big screen downstairs. It is still one of my favorite movies even though by today's standards, the effects are a little dated

Really?
To me, they're really not all that dated. I mean they are, in the sense of the time they were made, but they don't look old. Not to me, anyway.
Sure, I know today's computers can made photo realistic renderings and all... but TRON is meant to look like it took place in the digital world. To me, the imagery and visuals are just as stunning as they were in 1982. But then again, I clearly remember the feeling of looking at these visuals during a time when visuals of this kind had simply never been seen before. It's hard to forget the amazement of seeing beautiful 3D computer animation and cool glowing programs walking around and all the great stuff in there! I always kind of see TRON from the POV of my younger, childhood self.
To me, TRON will always look futuristic and amazing!

Like Todd, I will have to disagree with you on this. I think the effects have held up amazingly well for 24 years.
The computer animation was smooth, perfectly rendered and fit the story of being trapped in a computer perfectly.
I guess the only thing that would "date" it, is that it doesn't fit into the established mold that Pixar has set for computer animation. Now, don't get me wrong, I like Pixar stuff as much as the next guy, but when you go to a Pixar movie.... you know exactly what you're going to get, and frankly, people have mimiced them to point that there's really no originality in computer animation anymore.
Oh well.

Like Todd and Boingo, I also have to agree about the effects not being dated. They were revolutionary at the time, and still hold up well today.
The whole glow effect throughout the movie, done with compositing, has never been done since. Meaning there's nothing to compare it to. So one could only call it dated, if there was something newer to compare it with. And there isn't!
Also, for the CGI parts . . . the stark look of the CGI worked perfectly for the film. The whole idea was for everything to look impossibly perfect, since we're dealing with the inside of a computer. The trend over the last couple of decades has been to soften the graphics, and make them look more real. But that should - no, must - not be used for Tron.
For any sequel, the CGI artists need to restrain themselves and not go crazy with the graphics. I'm not saying they can't update the look somewhat. But remain faithful to the spirit of what was done in the film. I think Tron 2.0 managed to accomplish that, and sets a good example of what we should see in a new film.
Hmm, now I want to pop my Tron DVD back in and watch it again.

Ping.
My daughter and I spent Sunday drawing pictures together. This time I introduced her to Prismacolors. I kinda have to have something on in the background when I draw, so we put on Tron. Naturally, I had to draw a whacked-out Tron looking character, deflecting a disk with his own. That's an excellent quote from the film. I know I always feel creatively energized after watching TRON myself. That film gets the creative energies flowing like no other film can!
Oddly enough, the first thing I always want to do after watching TRON is make my own TRON film! Man - if only I had the time and some better resources!

Absolutely. That's why we watch the same ones over and over again. We get that shot of endorphins whenever we watch it.

PING-pong!
Ladies and gentlemen, I have pinged again!
The bit does not always change shape when it talks. Ram knows what a cork is. The MCP does not need Sark to be touching the glowy handgrip thingies to slow down his power cycles. The Reco Flynn brought back was one of the ones Clu blew up. Ram sounds like an insurance salesperson. And Encom is in LA.
Okay. I'm done.

PING!
Ooohhh YEAH!
There's NOTHING like a good dose of TRON to get those creative circuits all powered up!
It's been a while since I last enjoyed TRON. It felt so good! You forget how good it feels until you find a pure source!
Of course, as always, I WISH I could be digitized now.
TRON always has that affect on me. I see it, and I wanna BE it!
Funny thing - my wife was watching it with me, and she asked "what game is that" when Flynn was playing in the arcade scene. I told her it's called "Space Paranoids". She asked if I played it. I had to laugh and tell her that the game didn't exist back then - it was just for the film.
And when the Solar Sailor was passing by the grid bugs my wife shouted out "damn spiders!". We've been playing a lot of Atari VCS Centipede lately and she gets so irritated by the spider. It was really funny because it caught me off guard - I had to laugh.
Ahhh - all that TRON goodness!

PING a-PING PING!
The first ping is for the guy from work to whom I lent my DVD.
(Yes, I quizzed him to make sure he watched it.)
The second is for watching it while I worked when he brought it back.
And the third is for last night with the family.
It's been a good week. ********************************************************************

Watched it with Surk (her ping shall come momentarily) and also played Tron 2.0 for the first time for about three seconds before dying due to my lack of ability to use Xbox controls.
