i will be on more now but i have some serios ping problems
on a wireless router (linksys wrt54gs) any ideas?
like forward what ports etc

So, I tried playing multiplayer lightcycles right now and it said there were no available servers. Is this common, or is it something I am doing wrong?

No, it's not common. (But it does happen on occasion.)
However, I would guess that maybe you haven't patched the game yet? You need to use the patch, if you want to play online.

The only problem is . . . if you patch the game, your saved games from Single Player will become useless. So either wait until you finish the game, or start over.

Yeah, I patched it (I was only at the VERY beginning of the game, so that's OK)
I played for a bit online. I suck though. I need some serious practice  And a better controler than the keyboard.

Haaaa! Great that you've entered the (non XBox) world of online multiplayer light cycle gaming!

About sucking - it's a whole different ballgame when you're playing against other people instead of the game bots, huh?
I hope you stick with it and don't let frequent derezzing turn you off the game. We ALL have to pay our dues out there before we get any good.  I'd suggest when you derez, switch your view to follow another player you consider to be the strongest player out there. Watch how they operate and move. Much can be learned that way.
And if you're not comfortable using your keyboard to turn, try setting up your left/right buttons as your mouse buttons. It sounds odd, and takes a little getting used to, but it works. I've actually spoken with other players who use that configuration. It was back in my early days of mp LC that I saw someone saying that they used their mouse to turn. It sounded weird, but I tried it and did better. The left hand controls the speed and power-ups, and the right hand controls the turning and camera angle. Try it.
Oh, and if you're having trouble with response time - as in you turned several times, but only a couple of turns registered, consider turning off your special FX to help with game response a little. When I play through the fp adventure, I can play at 800x600 with all effects turned on high. But on the game grid, I'm a goner unless I turn everything off, including the screen sync. Your PC may be able to handle the game at better settings than mine does though. I've got an old GeForce 2 card and not much processing power under my PC's hood.

I spent some time on the game grid earlier today. Had a great time, as always. Was playing under a name no one would associate with as me.
I had the pleasure of meeting up with dIrK - that was a pleasant surprise! At least I think it was dIrK - he was playing under another name, that some of the regulars know he uses. But when someone asked if it was him, he confirmed that it was. And he was indeed the most skilled cyclist out there, after a couple of warm up games.
He wasn't playing like faster-than-the-eye-can-keep-up-with dIrK of back in the heyday of mp LC, but he was definitely superior to everyone else out there and did use several amazingly precise moves that he always did pull off well. That makes a lot of sense anyway, because when you don't play all the time, you loose your edge. But I believe it was him and I had a blast trying to take him down!
Well, dIrK, if that was you out there today, I sure enjoyed taking you down good a few times! Of course, you took me down even better several more times, but it was a blast trying! You really should drop in more often.
Let's see... who else did I meet up with out there today...
I had the pleasure of meeting up with Mercury.exe, ReCycler (who's really very good), Meekie, Crimsonseyes, QuickSilver(LN), {[X-Plosion]} (aka {[ JL ]}), {{{^-_-^}}}, and of course, dRiK, who was playing under his other name.
I play a mix of highly skilled games and not so skilled games. It was funny because I seemed to win every other circuit, but on the circuits I did not win, I'd end up with like -1 as a score!   I slammed in to a few damn walls, but didn't do too bad with them.
Maybe I'll jump on the game grid later today, using a name people may be a bit more familiar with. Anyone got time for a few circuits?

Well, I did hit the game grid again, but I didn't play under a name anyone would identify as me. I'm kind of lame sometimes. 
While out there, I had the pleasure of meeting up with DangerMouse, Brina, ErosioN, ReCycler, and §ARG£NT.
Well, most of them were a pleasure anyway. §ARG£NT had quite a mouth on him and shouted out profanities every time he went down and spent most of the time complaining that he wasn't having any fun because he wasn't winning. And then he threatened to "crash the server" but the only thing he was crashing was his own light cycle! .
He was annoying, but amusing at the same time. I kind of feel bad for people like that. We all tried to calm him down, but he just kept swearing and ranting... and crashing!
Hey §ARG£NT, if you're reading this - lighten up dude! It's JUST a game! We all win some and we all loose some. It's not about winning or loosing, it's about enjoying your time out there with everyone. I can loose every game I play and STILL have a blast because the game is fun and so are the good people I get to hook up with out there. Perhaps you'd notice that if you stopped shouting profanities long enough to enjoy everyone's company.
Well, we all still had a great time... those of us who weren't miserable because we kept crashing and trash talking. There were some great duels out there tonight too. I tell ya - ReCycler really gives you a run for the money! I had a couple of really intense duels with him tonight. And Brina made me work hard too a couple of times. Of course, they BOTH got the best of me many times as well. Win or loose, there's just NOTHING like a good take down!

hehe, I think I know who that guy is.. as you said, that's pretty annoying to see someone ranting about skills, ect. The thing is... he can kick everyone off the server, he did it last night. There were 5 people in DA 5, and he said by bye everyone, and about 15 seconds later, everyone got a error on thier computer, and lithtech shut down. That is a shame. I guess they ought to fix that..

I think he's done that to us before. Someone (can't remember exactly who) kept saying he was going to "crash the server". After several threats and very annoying trash talk, we ALL got an error and it looked like we got booted.
Well, he didn't exactly crash the server, but he did something that booted us.
We all just re-gathered and played afterward. He was gone and we had a blast!

Yes..I was in there during the "bye bye everyone incident" so heres the scoop on the situation on Dayentech's servers.
I have been set up as moderator for all of dayentech's tron servers (i have access to more...but thats besides the point).
I can kick/ban players AND restart the server...so if that crap happens again..I can at least restart the server. (if I'm there)
And as for the mystery guest...I believe I know WHO it is....but I cannot ban him as he uses an IP Spoofing program. I'm always on the lookout though.

I could give a crap about this guy personally. He played crappy, swore a lot, annoyed everyone, booted everyone from the server (including himself) and then we all gathered back without his annoying-damn presence and had a blast!
I used to get really pissed about idiots like that, but I really don't care now. They come, the annoy, they get bored, they leave. Sometimes, they're so pathetic, I actually enjoy it to some extent. What I really love is that they get so pissed and frustrated, they become very easy targets on the game grid - easy derezzes! And it only pissed them off more!
If they're going to exist (and they will) you may as well make the best of it. There is entertainment to be had watching them make fools of themselves.

You REALLY need to hit the light cycle game grid more often! You used to do really well out there. If you just hit it a few times a week, I bet your skills come back fast!
I'd love to meet up with you again and play another game of clean up the game grid and then go head to head. Do you remember when we played that a few times back in the day? I think it was with you... oh man - there goes my memory circuits! There were some really annoying, trash-talking kids out there once or twice and we used to pick them off before going head to head ourselves. Was a lot of fun!
