On the plus side, Star Wars is finally coming to DVD in Sept. (Which I hope will have tons of little goodies on them.)
On the other hand, they're just releasing the "Special Editions" versions with no intentions to release the original format.
Dammit - Han shoots first!
Ol' Georgie has really damaged the SW franchise with this IMHO.

While I agree that it is George's right to do this, I agree it would be great to be able to see hem in their original form. Unfinished works or not, that is what I saw in 79 a the Mann's Chinese in Hollywood, and I want to experieince tha moment again. George Lucas is taking that from me.order abortion pill abortion pill buy online where to buy abortion pill

Wow! SW on dvd. I hadn't heard. I also hope there will be a ton of good behind the scenes stuff and features.
And to agree with the other posts, yes, I also wish there was going to be a version of the original films. Not that I dislike the enhanced versions, but it's not the same. Oh, well. At least I still have the (ever fading ) vhs copies of them.

I guess it's going to be packaged exactly like the Indiana Jones Trilogy is. There will be the 3 DVDs, 1 for each movie and a 4th DVD of all extras. Sounds pretty juicy to me. I'm also in the same ballpark as people who would like to view the original movies as they once were. I don't entirely mind too much though. I'll just be happy enough to finally have them in my collection.

You know, I was so excited when I first heard that Mr. Lucas and co. were going back and "finishing" his unfinished films. He was even going to add the deleted Jabba scene. I thought it was GREAT!
But...
He mixed up stuff... and Jabba looked... uh... well, he didn't quite look right... or move right.
Yeah - what was up with the Greedo, Han thing? It looked funny even - plus I KNEW Han shot first! It was way more real for him to shoot first! Blah.
And the altered "getting shot" scenes - why did those need to get re-cut to NOT show the bad guy getting hit with the blaster bolt? I first saw this film in the summer of 77, I was 6. These "violent" scenes had no negative impact on me... in fact, they were part of the reason this film was so real to me back then - it had grit. "Softening" the film was a stupid thing to do. Oh well.
I'd kind of like to see the original (pre-SE) Trilogy myself... though I've heard them say several times that it will NOT be released like that.
I'm sure the DVD's will end up in my collection. I've been a big SW fan since the age of 6... when my parents took me to that fantastic movie back in the summer of 1977.

Political correctness? I recall Han having shot first too. The Jabba thing looked awkard because well, there was a problem with the scene. Han walked around the guy (stand in for Jabba... which was supposed to be a human, not slug)... so it does look very weird. They made him have to step on the tail. @_@

I signed that petition a long time ago under another ID as I recall.
I think the ultimate would be a DVD version that allows you to see the originals, the SE versions and the new versions Lucas is rumored to be making. That would be cool.

There's always a few purists around, isn't there? I mean, what if the same thing went for Tron? Would you rather have a grainy film or a shiny, hi-res version? I know which one I'd rather have. Let go Star Wars fans. But no, seriously...
I think George Lucas will milk the DVDs for all their worth, then, release the original Star Wars in all its grainy glory the following year. More money in the coffers. Think about it. The trend has gone on for years. First he releases the original trilogy on VHS, then a few years later comes along the THX verison, then the Widescreen version, then the Laserdisc, then the Special Edition...it's obvious. Lucas knows he's on to a winner. So rest assure Star Wars purist's - the original version will come out on DVD...only in about two years time. Another new version? I haven't heard that rumor yet... I guess its time to do a little searching.
And I sort of agree with Red5 on this one. I think that the odds that the original won't come out on DVD at some point is about zero. I'm not sure when but there's too much money to be made there for it not to happen. It makes me think of New Coke and Cola Cola Classic. The longer they hold off on giving us back the original the more we'll want it. Its marketing...

wwwmwww,
He's been shooting scenes during the prequels that are meant to snap into the original movies is what I have read in various stories. Am I alone in seeing this?
Red5,
To answer your question, I own the original releases of TRON, and I own the cleaned up version on DVD in each of it's forms. I will sit in an old theatre and watch a faded, color imbalanced version of TRON and love it as much as I do when I see the beautiful DVD version.
It's not about being a purist, it's about being a fan and wanting to see the things that made you love it. It's why I spend as much time as I do with TRON and why guys like Auric build sites like this. We are fans. We care about preserving and promoting TRON or Star Wars or whatever we love to future generations of people.
Can you understand that?

Well, the versions being released on DVD will be the 1997 Special Editions, no additional changes made.
As for the "purists"...thing is, I am an aspiring filmmaker. For people who make movies, there are a few films that are absolutely sacred, and the Star Wars Trilogy is one of them.
The problem with the Special Editions is that so much work went into the original versions...work by guys like John Dykstra and David Fincher. A lot of that work disappeared when Georgie decided to replace their model and practical work with CGI.not to mention the conversation with Jabba (which would have been cool had it not pretty much repeated the content of the Greedo conversation) and, of course, Han not shooting first.
And what's even more disturbing is that Spielberg got on the bandwagon when he screwed around with ET, erasing all the rifles and adding that horrid CG alien...but then again the DVD release of that film INCLUDED the original version as well.
hey Darth Flannel...ever heard of "seamless branching"?

I doubt it. I just haven't been keeping up on the Star Wars news. I just did a quick search on "Star Wars Rumors" and found far more information then I can wade through now. I'll take your word for it. It does sound like something Lucas would do.
To Red5 comment... I think he was asking which version of TRON would you like to see. The one as it stands now or a version where all the CGI was redone with the best computers could put out today. It is true that alot more can be done now then 20 years ago. But to the question which would I rather have? I want the one I have. Its a piece of history just as it is. I think that's how many feel about Star Wars. The Star Wars that they first saw and were so impressed with fixed for itself a place in history. Its the original version that earned that place in history not the second version... or the third. If you want to show off what computers can do now make the next TRON movie. Don't retell the first. I feel the same way about Star Wars. If Lucas wants to tell a Star Wars story and use state of the art effects then I wish he'd start on episodes 7, 8, and 9. He's already done a great job on 4, 5, and 6. This 'updating' of the first 3 films every couple of years just hits me as an attempt to make the most money off of the fans with the least amount of effort. Then again I guess that's the nature of business. Why spend $5 to make $10 when you can do it spending $1. That seems to be the way everything is going these days. Keep in mind this is just the opinion of someone that hasn't been able to find work for 5 months because he was let go in the name of cost cutting. Someone over in India is now probably doing what I was doing and getting paid 1/5th as much to do it.

Just as a side note, talking about original versions, I was digging through some old boxes in the closet (looking for Event Horizon of all things) And I found a VHS TRON I didn't even remember I had! That means I also have the movie three times; the vhs (newer, has the darker color art on the box), the first widescreen dvd release and the 20th ann. 2 disc set. This brings my whole TRON collection to 3 movies, two copies of the soundtrack, TRON 2.0 and an old Atari game (somewhere...).
Back on Star Wars, I don't think anything can replace the original movies. Every once in a while I still like to get out my old version (no special edition, no THX) and give them a watch. Why not the THX? Well, that's just not how I remember them. Those old faded copies with screen flickers and sound clips are the movies I grew up watching, and they hold all the Star Wars magic for me.
Not that I won't buy whatever Mr. Lucas decides to put out. I own more copies of these same three movies than I care to think about. I don't really dislike the changes he makes (well, maybe a little), it's just not what I call "Star Wars".
Now, if you'll excuse me, I gotta go watch this Tron vhs...where to buy abortion pill ordering abortion pills to be shipped to house buy abortion pill online

I nice special edition DVD would be David Lynch's DUNE w/ the deleted scenes. Also, Clash of the Titans would look good w/ CGI.
