The Last Starfighter was an awesome film!
It's been brought up several times in various threads and always gets a lot of good chat going on about it. Like the arcade games featured in TRON (and just the digital world itself), the really cool 3D arcade game in the film had me believing that we'd soon be playing full 3D video games ourselves. Unfortunately, it took the gaming industry several years to catch up to the film industries visual FX magic in a real time game. Mostly because of cost, I'm sure.
Anyway, such an awesome film. It was also groundbreaking, as was TRON, in that it employed computer animation in place of the use of the (then standard) models. They went for a realistic look, rather than TRON's (on purpose) perfect computer look. I can't say it looked truly real to me, but I remember being highly impressed with it at the time, as I still am today - probably because I can still watch the film through the eyes of my younger self... if that makes any sense.

That scene really gave me the creeps as a kid when I saw it in the theater. It was gross, creepy, cool, and even scary at the same time, and I loved it!
I think that you'll find your perceptions of what scared you in your earlier years as opposed to what does now and in the future mellowing out a lot. It's part of getting older. These days, I have a hard time really getting spooked by anything. It's sad, really. I miss that kind of fun - yeah, I'm weird like that.

Because of that movie, I have stopped thinking human, I know I have a good thing going and I don't want to blow it so I keep smiling, and I always trust Centauri!
Stone-cold the coolest line of the movie: What do we do? |
Yeah - it ROCKED, didn't it?
Wasn't it great to be relatively young back then and truly enjoy it for it's time (when made) in addition to the greatness that it was?
Alpha Centauri was awesome! I always wanted to be approached by him after seeing the movie. The reality in films like that were always so much cooler and more interesting than real life. I knew I had what it takes to be a starfighter, too. That was what was so cool about films like this - you left the theater wanting, and even knowing that you can be a starfighter and defend the universe, just like Alex. I want Grig to be MY navigator too!
I loved your audio sample. I didn't need to hear it to know what the response was, but it was cool to hear it again. This is one of those films that really embeds itself in memory. So much coolness to it, and I've seen it several times over the years. The Klingons would have been proud of the way the bad guys (forget their name) in the film went out like that - tough to the last moment.
Wasn't it creepy the way those bad-guy computer operators would get fried when their consoles blew up? I loved their death sound and their creepy antenna-like eyes showing like that.
Yep - totally classic and awesome movie!
