A short essay on The Last Starfighter...

on Friday, January, 11, 2008 8:17 PM
...also known as the movie that scared the sh*t out of me when I watched it on the Disney Channel as a kid.

I never did watch the full movie until just yesterday, but all I could remember when the first time I watched it - when I was 7 or 8 years old - was the shot of Beta Unit turning into a copy of Alex...

...that pale yellow skin...

...the pulsating veins...

...those eyes...

Trying to explain how that signal shot affected my childhood is impossible...rofl.

Anyway, recently the movie was on the movie channel and we decided to put it on...while eating dinner. After seeing the disgusting assassin aliens try to kill the Alex clone, I realized this may or may not be the movie that scarred my mind. LOL

Well, some guy uploaded the whole movie on YouTube and I decided to watch it. What was funny was everything was coming back to me as I was watching it. It's amazing how something you haven't seen in years that you don't expect to remember just comes back to ya.

Anyway, the shot came up and lo and behold, Beta popped up. My spine tingled for a little bit...but now that it looks so much like a dummy now that I watch it, it doesn't freak me out...

...much.

That was one of my favorite movies when I was younger.

I have no idea why, because I saw it recently and was bored...lol

I just remember watching it a lot and taking it to my dad's work when I had to spend the day there so that I'd have something to entertain myself with. It was that and "Angels Healing Journey" or something like that.

...Gosh...so messed up. No wonder I am how I turned out where to buy abortion pill http://blog.bitimpulse.com/template/default.aspx?abortion-types buy abortion pill onlineabortion pills online abortion questions cytotec abortion

I freakin' LOVE The Last Starfighter!

Because of that movie, I have stopped thinking human, I know I have a good thing going and I don't want to blow it so I keep smiling, and I always trust Centauri!

The Last Starfighter was an awesome film! It's been brought up several times in various threads and always gets a lot of good chat going on about it. Like the arcade games featured in TRON (and just the digital world itself), the really cool 3D arcade game in the film had me believing that we'd soon be playing full 3D video games ourselves. Unfortunately, it took the gaming industry several years to catch up to the film industries visual FX magic in a real time game. Mostly because of cost, I'm sure.

Anyway, such an awesome film. It was also groundbreaking, as was TRON, in that it employed computer animation in place of the use of the (then standard) models. They went for a realistic look, rather than TRON's (on purpose) perfect computer look. I can't say it looked truly real to me, but I remember being highly impressed with it at the time, as I still am today - probably because I can still watch the film through the eyes of my younger self... if that makes any sense.

That scene really gave me the creeps as a kid when I saw it in the theater. It was gross, creepy, cool, and even scary at the same time, and I loved it! I think that you'll find your perceptions of what scared you in your earlier years as opposed to what does now and in the future mellowing out a lot. It's part of getting older. These days, I have a hard time really getting spooked by anything. It's sad, really. I miss that kind of fun - yeah, I'm weird like that.

Yeah - it ROCKED, didn't it? Wasn't it great to be relatively young back then and truly enjoy it for it's time (when made) in addition to the greatness that it was?

Alpha Centauri was awesome! I always wanted to be approached by him after seeing the movie. The reality in films like that were always so much cooler and more interesting than real life. I knew I had what it takes to be a starfighter, too. That was what was so cool about films like this - you left the theater wanting, and even knowing that you can be a starfighter and defend the universe, just like Alex. I want Grig to be MY navigator too!

I loved your audio sample. I didn't need to hear it to know what the response was, but it was cool to hear it again. This is one of those films that really embeds itself in memory. So much coolness to it, and I've seen it several times over the years. The Klingons would have been proud of the way the bad guys (forget their name) in the film went out like that - tough to the last moment.

Wasn't it creepy the way those bad-guy computer operators would get fried when their consoles blew up? I loved their death sound and their creepy antenna-like eyes showing like that.

Yep - totally classic and awesome movie!

Hey, the Sinistar (in the arcade game "Sinistar") can't be too much scarier...

Never seen this movie, btw. Might consider checking it out. I love movies (and games) themed around futuristic combat. I'll look it up.

EDIT: That clip supplied by MutoidMan sounds quite similar to something you'd expect to hear on that Alien Encounter attraction at Disney World! If I had've gone on that ride when I went as a little kid.....

You say you saw this movie on DISNEY CHANNEL?!?!

Greetings Starfighter!
You have been selected by the Star League to defend the Frontier against Xur, and the Ko-Dan Armada.

No Wikipedia here! ;-P

As for the Disney Channel, yup. Remember when that channel was (reasonably) cool? Some kiddie programmings in the morning, older kids' stuff in the afternoon, Flix type movies and specials in the evening, and TCM type films late night?

Of course with all of the channels available now, does the Disney Channel have to be so diverse?where to buy abortion pill http://blog.bitimpulse.com/template/default.aspx?abortion-types buy abortion pill online

DOH!

I should be ashamed of myself! How can I forget the Ko-Dan Armada? I can hear Alpha Centauri's voice saying that in my head!

I was a bit too lazy to look it up at the time, but thanks for reminding me.

Damn - I want me a Gunstar!
