I do agree that alot of the designs do look very organic in nature. And there is a little hint of "Hey look how cool I am" in there too. But a Transforming robot would be highly complex in design, well at least these ones would be. In this version of Transformers the robots can mimic anything they look at, unlike the original generations where they have set Transformations and there isnt anything they can do about it.
In this movie they simply scan a object which is roughly there size in mass and they shift their bodies to match that configuration. So yeah they would look complex with alot fo seperate moving parts. Some of the Decepticon features however look rather pointless, like sharp teeth. I can only assume that they modified themselves to look more agressive and maybe add a little intimidation factor.
I think the main goal was to make them look alien, and they have done that well. All we can do is watch the movie and then review it on here

No... No I just can't see that.
In fact, you're like some kind of robot drawing machine.
Which would also make you a robot.

Just got back from seeing the film.
LOVED every moment of it!
I walked in expecting not much of a plot and was very supprised. The robot designs are wonderful and the complex details are very workable and in animated form look fantastic and go with each Transformer personality. The story and direction the film was taken was very well suited for Transformers. Caught alot of the little tributes toward the original Transformers. I would really recommend this film to go and see. https://www.flickr.com/photos/blue_bezel/ |

I thought I was the only one who loved this.
I walked out of it all pumped up full of excitement and joy because...YAY ROBOTS!
Sure, there was SOME lamenessosity. The whole slow-motion random scene where one of them was shooting was kinda stupid. I laughed a little.
BUT STILL!
Oh, god. I'm surprised at the number of bad reviews I hear from people. I mean, it was just a bunch of pure fun.
oh, yeah. Megatron also made me giggle. Running through the building and because he thinks the kid didn't remember his name he screams "MEGATROOON!"
I laughed at that too.
But still, I mean...that was just outstanding greatness. This was totally what I expected in a Transformers Film.
Oh, and I cried in a part. Felt like a lame nerd, but hey...I am! ^^
They really should've had less human stuff though. Just stick to the robots.
ROBOTS!! ALL HAIL MEGATRON!

I think the bad reviews are coming from film critics who are looking for more in a film than constant over-the-top action sequences, more and bigger explosions last year's big explosion-filled extravaganza, cliche one-liners, and a high schooler who's portrayed as being smarter than the military. I read one review that started out with "Complaining that Michael Bay's movies are big and dumb is like complaining that the ocean is wet." That really cracked me up. He also went on to say that for what it was, the film hit its mark.
I hate to admit, but I've been falling in to that category more and more myself in recent years. I'm either just getting old or I've just seen too many films that rely on explosion after explosion after explosion and all the other cliches that go along with this kind of big-budget summer action movie genre. I don't plan on seeing this film, just like I didn't plan on seeing last summer's big-budget action film... hell, don't even remember what it was. I won't see next summer's either. I'm not against this kind of film, but this formula just doesn't do much for me anymore. I wish they could make something a bit more intelligent AND full of action that was just a little less crazy unbelievable (like a high school kid saving the day or something like that). But there are a zillion arguments as to why that won't happen.
Anyway, I think that is why there are so many negative reviews. For the most part, the "summer blockbuster" is designed for and targeted toward younger crowds who just want a fun ride. Film critics generally do not fall within this category.
Film reviews (and game reviews, etc.) should really be done in a way that people can compare themselves to. For instance, someone who's really in to sci-fi, and has several other specific interests should be able to find reviews by someone who shares the same/similar interests. That would be more meaningful than today's critic system. Like a personality chart or something of the critic who's review one might be interested in, does that make any sense?
I found this review of Transformers. There's a little bit of everything in there and I think it is pretty fair, not to mention quite entertaining at the same time. See what you think:
The Hollywood machine hasn't been making many films that interest me these days, but I do enjoy the film reviews these guys put out. I love their ranking system shown at the end too. Clever and useful to the general movie goers.

I saw Transformers, and it ruled! It is the Movie it is hyped to be. The only thing I didn't like, is the Decepticons. Sure, you could tell Megatron didn't like Starscream, but they didn't tell why! And All of the rest of the Decepticons seemed bland. I have one thing to say to the Haters out there who hate the "New Generation" look. So what? Quit your b*tchin'. They are still the characters they were in 84'!
