I only saw that film once, but I think I remember that line. Cool movie.

Pulsewoman Wrote:Which level is your favourite, by the way? I really hope you can progress further on into the series so I can talk about the later ones. I know _much_ more I can say about the second, third, and fourth games, bwahaha.

Well, I've been stuck on Marble Madness (think that's the name) for a couple weeks now. The novelty of having Sonic in my phone has worn off and now it's down to game play and I am having a difficult time with it because of the controls. More because of my phone's controls and limitations there of - the game itself seems to have been programmed pretty well.

I'm having a far more difficult time on level 2 than I was on level 1. At this point, whenever I die, I loose interest in the game for a day or two before I'll touch it again. That is because I keep dying because of the hard to master controls on my phone and it is a big turn off. I want to play the game, not fight with my phone's limited control response.

I still dig it though. I'll keep playing. Not sure if I'll make it all the way on my phone though.

As far as favorite level - I never made it beyond the water lever (forget the name) - I think it is level 3 or 4. I was hoping to go past that point on my phone, but that seems unlikely unless I get a better grip on the controls.

Halloween comes to Mobius!

That's the music (jazzed up a bit) of the level I'm on right now. It is embedded in my mind as I can't seem to get past it!

Yeah, that's the Marble Zone music (more _slowed down_ than "jazzed up", but I know what you mean)...a level that does drive me a bit nuts, too, and that's on the original GENESIS version with a much larger screen and normal controller. (Although that doesn't have spin-dash, so it's a smidge harder than what you're playing in a different way. I'm not sure if that balances out the bad-control problem, but definitely does not help if you've played the later games first and keep expecting to be able to spin-dash.) I kinda like the atmosphere on that level...it's kinda funny that Sonic went "gothic" that early in all of a sudden, but yeah, it is WAY too easy to die there.

The one you're thinking of is the Labyrinth Zone (that's the water one)...also the ending of the last normal zone (before the final one), Robotnik suddenly throws in some water on top of you there, too. OY. Sonic does _not_ get along well with water. In fact, I and many others have made comments about how that's his _real_ nemesis, or at least his second one after the evil Doctor.

And get ready for the last boss battle if you get there--they force you to fight with NO RINGS. Absolutely no...freaking...rings. And NO chance of getting any ahead of time.

Enjoy!

Man, the later games ease up on you a bit, compared to that one...(shakes head) Well, up until Sonic Adventure 2, anyway, and especially Tails' ARK level and the!@#$ing Cannon's Core one at the end. Those are evil. EVIL, I TELLS YA!

You'll like Sonic 2 a _lot_ better if it's available for the cell phone, control issues and all. Seriously. It's more towards the "let's have fun" side and less towards the "kill them all quickly so we can take more of their quarters!" side. :P

Ahh - so it's a difficult level, period, huh? Although I seem to remember making it through it ok back in the early 90's. Hmm.

I'll get through it one of these days and see how far I get in the game.

I seriously wish I could plug in a controller and play like that, but they don't make them for my phone. order abortion pill http://unclejohnsprojects.com/template/default.aspx?morning-after-pill-price where to buy abortion pill

I wonder how long it will be until they do make controllers for cellphones? It's no stranger than making keyboards for them, which I think they already do (or maybe I am thinking o0f PDA's?)

They might, but I wouldn't buy one. The allure for me about games on the cell phone is the fact that it's small and portable.

Add a big bulky controller and it becomes all fumbly and cumersome

I think I would be a little weirded out playing something where the controller was BIGGER THAN THE ACTUAL GAME UNIT, yes. :P

Of course, I could never play a game on a cell phone in the first place. For one thing, I'd have to own one first (heh) and for another...I just know I'd keep fumbling the whole thing. The extreme smallness would just bother me so much. I'd keep just plain DROPPING the whole "game console" every time I tried to do anything. I mean, I'm not even used to ordinary hand-held units, and this is even smaller.

...anyway.

I haven't played Sonic much lately. I can't get passed level 2 because the controls are a bit tricky for me in this part of the game. It's been weeks since I played it. Like I said before - they did a fine job porting it to the mobile phone, but I really can't play it very good with the phone's controls.

Today I broke down and purchased Ridge Racer 3D for my phone. I'm not a big racing game fan (as in I would not likely buy one for a console), but I do enjoy a good racing game from time to time. The game looked pretty good for a phone game and I read some decent reviews about it.

The graphics are very good (considering it's a phone game) and it runs as smooth as silk... whatever "running as smooth as silk" might mean. Seriously, the frame rate is excellent - don't let that crappy animated GIF on the linked page fool you.

The game has an auto-accelerate feature and allows you to choose manual acceleration if you want. There's also an automatic transmission and manual. I leave it on auto-everything so all I have to do is steer and break (to slow down at times).

The simple controls allow for good game play, in terms of I can easily control the game without my fingers loosing their position on the directional pad (like in Sonic and Ms. Pacman).

The game is a very straight forward racing game - no weapons, upgrades - nothing fancy. It's just a racing game with a few cars to choose from, a few tracks and a few unlockable extra tracks. In that respect, the game is a lot of fun and hits the mark perfectly. It's awesome for killing 5 minutes or so in a race or two. That's usually about how much time I have for mobile gaming too - just a few minutes here or there, so what a perfect fit.

If you're in to racing games and don't need to be able to blow up stuff and upgrade and customize everything under the sun - this is a very satisfying game.

Oh - I kind of had a moment when playing the game the first time. This game has better graphics and looks prettier than anything I saw on my SNES just a few years back.. ok, 15 or so years, but it seems like yesterday. I'd say it's actually of PSX or N64 graphics quality (considering the size of it). All that, in my little phone. It just kind of made me think of where we were (technology-wise) just a few years ago. This is nothing compared to what a PSP game can do, but again - this is just a simple phone, or as I like to call it - my communicator.

I got Asteroids yesterday through my Verizon service. This version is by a company called "Glu". I bought it primarily for the "classic" arcade version and am very disappointed.

The sounds are in NO way connected to the 1980 version. Missing is the shooting sound, the UFO sound, and the best one of all, the rumbling asteroid exploding sound (replaced by a horrid *HSSSSSSSSSSSSST* noise ). The ship moves clunky-like and not very fast so it's hard to escape incoming asteroids.

They have new versions of the game including updated themes, as well as "power-up" levels which let you play based on multiplying your score.

All in all though, I just wanted classic asteroids and they completely f***ed that up. So if you'd like a new twist on an old game, then you might possibly like it. If, like me, you just wanted to play good *OL'* asteroids every now and again, it ain't happenin' with this version.

Luckily I bought the cheaper "subscription" version this time. I am getting smarter when it comes to this.

EDT: As an interesting side note I went to Glu's website and they actually have an emulated version of this game:

http://www.glu.com/noram/pages/product.aspx?pr=Asteroids#Emulator
Funny thing is the sound doesn't seem to work (imagine that, since that is the major FUBAR of the game) and it definately does not move that smooth and fast on my phone!

Kyocera did one a year or two back for their phones. Didn't catch on.

Thank you very much for that review. I have been considering getting Asteroids for my phone. After what I read, I'm pretty sure I'd be anything but happy with it. I can't believe they can mess up such a simple, classic formula such as that. Especially after they did such a good job (Glu) on Centipede, which I got some time back and STILL play frequently.

In fact, if you're looking for something that's classic 80's arcade and close enough to the original to be enjoyable, I'd say go back and read my Centipede review. It ain't 100% dead on, but it's close enough to be enjoyable and very easy to play on a phone (auto-fire helps a lot).

The subscription thing is a smart move - if the game sucks, you're only out a few dollars - about the cost of a gallon of gas.

Unfortunately, I subscribed to Ridge Racer 3D last month - a game which I really enjoyed and played great on my phone (for what it was). I canceled the subscription because I dislike repeatedly paying for what I already have. I wanted to simply upgrade to buying it, but there is no option for that - it's keep it and pay for another month, or cancel it and it's gone. What sucks is my racing status and unlocked tracks are also gone. Instead of just buying it and starting out all over again, I figure I'll give another game a try in the meantime.

I poke around from time to time, looking for games that would be easy to play on my phone, which means it can't rely on split-second timing and frequent need for moving in all 4 directions because my phone d-pad isn't very good for that. That's why I hardly ever play Ms. Pac Man anymore - I die more often from mispressed directions than I do from simply making the wrong choice of where to go.

Not sure what I'll get next, though I do have my eye on another 3D game that's gotten decent reviews and should be easy to enjoy given the constraints of my phone d-pad.

As for a game controller for my phone - I'd get one in a heartbeat if it seemed quality. I'd LOVE to be able to control my games better. I can see why the controller thing hasn't caught on though. Not many people are willing to carry around an extra item just to enjoy a quick game here and there. Oh well.

Hey Todd, glad my review helped you, although I really wish it were more positive. How cool would it have been to have that "bahmp baah, bahmp baah" and smashing asteroid sound coming from your phone?!

As for Centipede... I never actually liked that game in the arcade. It was a bigger quarter eater for me than Defender, so I shied away from it. I liked Millipede better when that came out. But I'm glad you like it.

I have the same problem on my PSP with the Namco Museum. The analog stick and D-Pad do not react quick enough... so ol' Pac Man or Dig Dug keeps on going when you meant to go right or left or whatever. It's very frustrating.

I've been eyeballing Burgertime, like Nikster suggested. I should have gotten that instead of Asteroids. But hindsight is 20/20

You know what I wish for?! Homebrew apps on our cell phones so we can run emulators... like MAME. I hear the i-Phone can do it. But oi! what a cost!

I got Dig Dug for my last phone, but it could barely play it. He moved about 2 pixels a second - very , very slow motion. It sucked and I demanded a refund, which they gave me. I've considered getting it for my current phone, but I'm worried that the 4-way directional thing and need for quick moves wouldn't work well, like Ms. Pac Man.

I've thought of that one too, but haven't taken the plunge for the 4-direction, fast moves needed reason again. If you get it, please do give the skinny on game play. I think we have the same phone model - I've got the LG 8300. Pretty good phone, although it falls well short of its potential (thanks to Verizon's evil removing of all features cool).

I'd LOVE that. But you know how Verizon is - they don't want people doing ANYTHING on their phone that they can't profit left and right from. Even though our phones are really just really small computers in a clam-shell, Verizon like to treat them like mini Verizon vending machines. Can you imagine how much it would cost if operation of PC's cost as much for every little thing we did with them? I wish they'd lighten up!

I had Galaga on my last phone - it played well, considering that phone was weak when it came to processing power. The problem with the game was that I always wanted to keep playing and often did very good. I couldn't sit and play for 2 or 3 minutes without wanting to keep going. The game itself was a very good recreation of the arcade classic, if you're in to that one. The only reason I haven't gotten it on my current phone is because I know I get hooked and don't want to put it down after a wave or two.

That's another thing I enjoy a lot in a game - the ability to keep me well entertained (without frustration of controls) for 2 to 3 minutes at a time, and at the same time offer longer appeal when time allows.

Yeah, we have the same one. Mine was free, so I'm relatively happy with it. I was told initially that you had to use THEIR software to convert music files, but that isn't true. The phone will play MP3's just fine. I got a 1GB card for it and can store lots of music and photos. One thing I don't like is the smaller size jack for the headphones. The headphones it came with are the "earbud" type.. which I hate... but they actually are pretty good earphones. The movies taken from the phone suck. But the photos taken on the highest resolution are actually not that bad. I'd rate the phone probably a C+ or B-

I have it now. It's actually not bad, if you play it with two hands. I'd actually recommend getting it.
