Cell Phone game reviews

All...

Post some reviews of Cell Phone games you have. I have a HUGE listing to choose from, but have only downloaded a couple. I am interested to see what other people have.

My reviews:

Galaga: by Namco. Translates "ok" to the cell phone. Graphics are a bit blocky, but that's ok on a small screen. All the functionality of the original game is intact. Sound is emulated very well. Only problem is the controls. You have to hold the phone with two hands, with your thumbs on each side of the D-Pad, alternating thumbs for fire. You can’t play this one-handed. B-

Tetris: by EA (Electronic Arts). Excellent. Perfect cell phone game. Sound is great. Options for three different modes of play. Easy to control and playable for a long time. A+

I've only had a handful of games on my communicator.

Ms. Pac Man - had it on my old Samsung phone (2004 model phone). It was just slightly slower than the arcade version and the dots had no sounds when you ate them, but most of the other sounds were there. The game looked and played very much like the arcade game itself and I played it a lot. The power pills lasted a slight longer than they should have making it a little too easy to eat all 4 ghosts in the early boards, but still very good translation.

I got Ms. Pac Man for my current LG phone - looks a little better, exact same sound scheme and plays a little closer to arcade speed. BUT the power pills only last about half as long as they should - opposite of the previous version. I'm lucky to get 3 ghosts in the early boards (sometimes 4 if they're all in just the right spot). Still a fun game and I hit it when ever I have a few minutes to kill between this or that.

Galaga - had that on my old Samsung phone. Nice translation of the arcade game, even if it only played at about 15 fps. The sounds were good for a phone-game and the game play was pretty good too (considering the size and resolution). The graphics were very close (again, considering resolution). This game I would only play when I had time to properly get as far as I could. It ALWAYS got my heart pumping as I loved the game back in the 80's and still do today! I got pretty good with the double-ship thing too.

Dig Dug - got it for my old Samsung. It played in very, very slow motion and I requested a refund (which they gave me upon taking my phone to the nearest Verizon location and allowing them to erase it in-store). Really, really, REALLY slow. Perhaps it was the phone though.

Tetris - had it on my Samsung. I didn't care for the fact that the ouline of the shape on the bottom of the screen made it too easy and could not be disabled, but I played it from time to time - not as much as Ms. Pac Man, but fun game.

Space Invaders - got it for my Samsung. Only played it about 4 or 5 times in the two years I had it. TOTALLY SUCKED! It played in slow motion, there were no sounds, and the invaders only sped up 1 increment after about 2/3 of them were destroyed. I even wrote to Taito complaining about it but just got a slight apology back and blah, blah, blah. The original is awesome, but this phone-version sucked.

Centipede - downloaded a 3-minute trial version for my LG just this past weekend. It looked very close to the arcade version, aside from the fact that the screen was too small (the mushrooms were proportionately too large as a result). It had an auto-fire feature that was very helpful. The sounds were choppy at best, but close to the arcade game. The movement of the centipede was very fliud and dead-on to the arcade game. I'm considering purchasing this game, but not made up my mind yet. I love phone games (good ones) but don't have time for much more than 2 minutes here and three minutes there and that's it for a span of 2 or 3 days.

Wow - I wrote more than I expected I would.

My Tetris does allow you to disable the "ghost" so we must have different versions. Thanks for the review. I have been wanting to try some other classic games, but need to wait until next billing cycle. I'm like a kid in a candy store.

You know - ever since I downloaded that 3-minute trial of Centipede for my phone, I've had the urge to buy it.

I hate that.

If I buy it, I'll only play it a few times a week, and for only a minute or two each time.

I don't need it.

These games are quite expensive considering how hard they are to play using the phone's directional pad. I can't get through a single game of Mr. Pac Man without dying almost every time because of an incorrect move - as in the controller didn't register my turn or my finger meant to hit a direction and missed it slightly because it's too little and not very good for gaming on.

Still, I love my little Ms. Pac Man breaks.

Damn. I bet I pay for the full Centipede game before this week is over. I'm so weak when it comes to the classics. I just feel better having them available - my own little mini-arcade.

Yep.

I broke down on break yesterday at work.

I just HAD to get my Centipede fix!

I could have played it online or waited until I got home... but the ability to pull it out of my pocket and play it any time I want was too tempting.

Another $8.00 finds the classic gaming hole in my pocket.

You know - just TWO years ago, these classic games were only $6.00. What happened? Perhaps they rise with the price of crude oil?

That's cool about Centipede.

I succumbed to temptation and bought Duke Nukem 3D Mobile

Gamespot gave it an 8.2, but I am not all that impressed. The levels are too small, Duke moves about too slowly, the controls are somewhat difficult, and the challenge lies in blasting everything that moves, and not in solving any puzzles.

All in all, I would give this a C-... not worth the $9.99 I plunked down for it.


I'm surprised, Todd, that you and I are the only cell phone gamers on the Sector. I figured there would be a ton of people. *Shrugs*

todays gamer is too demanding of eye-candy and people just dont play games on a phone that much anyway. they're diffenetaly the reasons why i dont play mobile phone games anyway.....

Some games are definitely more suited for the cell phone than others.

Tetris, for example, plays VERY well on the phone.

Bejeweled probably won't because of the need for a mouse, or touch screen, etc.

Having games on my cell phone is handy when I have to sit and wait for something (like a haircut).

Too bad Dave left.. he could have given us insider information into the world of cell phone games.

I'm a little surprised as well. Then again, so many people have small gaming devices like the PSP, GBA, etc., that perhaps not many others see the need for games on their phones as well - especially since they'll play better on an actual gaming device.

Sorry about Duke Nukem being a let down, btw. That must really suck!

The ONLY reason I downloaded Centipede on my phone is because a free 3-minute trial was offered. I had nothing to loose - if the game sucked, I would know quickly and not have to pay a dime. All it took was three minutes to infect my head with the fact that this was indeed a worthy phone port of the classic game. It's even got a power-up mode to play that is actually a fun twist on the game.

It's so hard for me to play games on my phone because of the control limitations alone that I probably won't be getting many more UNLESS I am able to try it for free FIRST. Damn shame not more games offer that feature.

Ms. Pac Man is very difficult because I constantly loose my finger places on the pad, thus dying when I was trying to turn. This game is borderline between annoying because I can't always move correctly (dying often because of that), and fun because I can move ok much of the time. Somehow this game played a lot better on my previous phone, or more accurately put, my previous phone's controls were easier on my fingers. My old phone had a wide oval directional pad while my current phone has a larger circular one.

Centipede is more enjoyable because I can get away with just moving back and forth a lot, and the game has an auto-fire option so I don't have to keep trying to fire while moving. Very different strategies used in the phone port than in the real game, but the fun factor is high on both.

For now, I've only got the two games on my phone. I'm sure I'll buy another glassic game or two in the months to come.

I'd love to play 3D games on it, but I don't think they'll do well with the teeny controls that are a bit hard for me. Then again, perhaps I'll find one with a free demo period so I can try. I'm good with what I have for now though.

ok u guys converted me heres my recent buys and reviews:

age of empires 2: like the blast of a cannon and a thud of a connection, age of empires is coming to your small screens! it has a campaign, tutorial and random map, enough to kill train journey the port from pc to phone is flawless. MIDI music is just as tuneful as their pc bros, and the graphics are clear and crisp. 89%!

Hrm... I don't seem to be able to download that game (AOE2) for my particular phone. That's too bad. From the GameSpot screen shots it looks like a pretty cool game.

When I had Nextel service almost two years ago I bought Pitfall! for my Motorola i760. It was a near-perfect port as far as I could tell, except for two things: No Tarzan yell when you swing on the vine, and no "dum de dum dum duuuuum" - famously from Dragnet but originally from the The Killers - when you die. Those two omissions kinda took most of the fun out of the game for me. I ended up playing Pitfall! only once in a blue moon, and when I did play it the tiny cell phone keypad always cramped my fingers.

At this point, I haven't purchased any games for my Cingular Motorola RAZR, and as you might imagine, I don't plan on purchasing any.

I think I'd enjoy Pitfall even without those noises... but to be honest, they're so much a part of the game, it just wouldn't feel the same! I doubt I'd be able to play it on my phone though - I have such trouble with the controls - mostly up and down. I seem to mis-hit the pad when those directions for some reason.

I'm guessing because they are a bit difficult to play with the phone's keys, right?

If the games were a bit easier to play with my phone's keypad, I'm sure I'd get more. My phone has excellent battery life and a pretty good display. But games aren't as fun when you can't control them properly and/or half the sounds are missing.

Slightly OT, but I had to say it somehwere...

I love your new sig animation, Boingo_Buzzard! Very cool!

Not sure if you gif utility allows, but you might consider making the background transparent so that it blends in with both background colors in the forums.

Either way - it's really cool and had me grinning ear-to-ear watching it!

Somewhere there is a solar sailor (perhaps the one in my sig) that had better watch out - Boingo_Buzzard's grid bug is on the loose!

Thanks, Todd, I'm glad you like it . I'll see about making that background transparent. I did this today at work, trying to avoid doing work. One of the pitfalls (to keep on topic ) of being in a "self-starting" job, is I sometimes just feel like animating a grid bug instead of doing work

3D Tilt A World

It uses your camera on the phone to create the illusion that by moving the phone you’re moving the ball on the screen. Quite neat, but only works well if your camera is focused on a highly textured surface.

The technology has a ways to go, but this is still kinda fun and unusual.

Haaaaa!

I just watched the video trailer for that - it looks really cool! Oddly enough it is available for my phone's predecessor, BUT not my phone. Hmm. Oh well.

I haven't gotten anything since Centipede. I don't even get to play it often - don't have much time. Although I got to play it for a brief stint on the throne at work today.
