Future Computer?

on Friday, June, 23, 2006 11:58 AM
Description
pen1 projects keyboard on table, pen2 projects monitor, pen3 has inside the CPU, pen4 is a cordless phone, pen5 is a webcam. The parallelepiped with holes is the recharging unit.

Check it out here and some other freaky tech:

I just wanted to share this since it's kind of neat. I remember seeing a vid of it a few years ago and was struck by awe.... I guess the James Bond gizmos are just around the corrner....

Wow... a computer made out of pens?

That looks really cool! I'm sure it will be many years before this technology is even possible, but I can still stare at it in awe for a while now.

Cool find, Qix!

Keep in mind these are all artistic future technology conepts. The end product when finished can look completely different.

Two of those concepts are not new infact one of them has been around since the early 60's. I wouldn't hold my breathe.order abortion pill http://unclejohnsprojects.com/template/default.aspx?morning-after-pill-price where to buy abortion pill

Very true... Such concepts rarely make it past the prototype phase, however NEC does have a way of pushing the tech without thinking of the risks.... but that was a very long time ago....

NEC has been around for a very very long time. I remember working on some pinball PCBs from the 80's and some pre 80's and noticed a lot of chips (memory and EEPROMS) made by NEC, AMD, and of course Motorola. Just a little fun fact... I haven't read up the history of NEC but I know I will soon... They were also mostly responceable for the Turbo Gfx-16 (a.k.a. PC engine game system)

Ok.... Back to the Pens....

Although this is really an amazing concept, and looks really convent... I can't really see where this could be a replacement or even a comparason to my Lab Top... But it's still cool....

And yes... don't anyone hold their breath... NEC may have already shelved the project... sadly enough...

Sony had a very similiar almost identical concept for a phone with flexible circuitry.

The project was scrapped.

I would use my laptop anyday over that pen concept. I don't like using something that has the ability to fall out of my hands very easily and smash on the cement floor below.

It's why I get concerned that cellphones are getting to small cause without the leather case on my cellphone I would have a hard time holding it.

I believe that tech can get too small... I was amazed at how small the DS carts are... I have two neises that are soon to lose most of theirs.

I wonder how many people lose their cell phones per year. I mean, it's like how I am with guitar picks... I have em for a few mins and then they just magicaly disappear...

.... ok... so I really haven't lost my phone... but it's only a matter of time....

The nerd that had all 5 of those pens would sure need a big pocket protector!

Really, though, that tech isn't that hard now; I see it coming soon. In the 60s, it'd be harder to implement.

Nowadays, with wireless tech the way it is, there's no real issue with wirelessly transmitting the data from one pen to another. CPUs and Hard Drives (USB drives, etc.) are small. Digital cameras are small. The only hard part is the keyboard, but I read a 'future tech' report a couple years ago that said the technology works, but not so well in bright light (e.g., sunlight) situations -- but they were trying to make it work better.

So... this could be soon. I don't see this (or something similar) going another 5 years without being introduced into the market.

I've seen concepts like that, several times before.

When is the concept going to become reality? I don't know how practical those designs are going to prove, but I'd certainly enjoy the chance to try a prototype.

Good points made...

Reguardless, it would be fun to play with...

What gets me is that VR was sort of the talk-of-the-town back in the 90's and today, we hardly ever hear of them... We know that VR will someday be the future, but when? It's not dead, but I've been to some sites that sell them and your looking to pay $2k for a cheap one that may not work right....

Anyways... I like the pens...

Edit: Correction... by VR I mean the VR glasses..

I want one of those computers...even if typing on that keyboard would be a little wierd.

I'm sure I'd get used to not feeling the keys when I typed...*Tries to imagine it*

ah, well, I'm sure those either won't come out very soon, or won't be cheap to buy any time soon.

Nice concept. But not practical for me. Even with my current cell phone that I have. I am almost afraid to touch it because they look too fragile. One wrong sneeze and like where did it go?? And looking at the wall in a gazillion pieces against the wall underneath snot you know. That computer concept doesn't look bad. It looks easy too loose though. Too small. And what if you thought that they were pens instead of a computer there eh qixx?

VROOOOOOOOOMMMM!!!

To compute or not to compute that is the question at hand. Tis nobler to compile in C++ or in TASM.

I've been looking forward to this type of technology for a long time. I'm not worried about how fragile it might be, that's what protective cases are for.

Lighting conditions will be key. I hope they can make these usable in bright conditions.

Yeah, lighting will be an issue. Me personally an idealized futuristic computer would be a touchscreen computer drawing desk the size, like Dillingers desk, that I could draw and work on endlessly. That's just me though.

This is still a really cool concept.

For cell phones, I'd much rather type emails and text messages using a full-size 'keyboard of light' like this than using the small keypad on a cell phone where you have to hit the "7" key four times to make an "s", or a RIM Blackberry that gives people sore thumbs. When using a cell phone (or Blackberry) keypad, you normally have to look a the keys anyways. So for cell phone purposes, I see nothing wrong with having no tactile response; we're used to looking at the keyboard anyways. I'm getting a Blackberry at work soon, so I really really want one of these keyboards to save my thumbs.

Yeah... if anything, I'd love to have the lazer keyboard as well. Even if I don't really have a real need for it. Plus I'm the type that just loves to freak out my friends...

Qix>> I give you the JJ Award of Excellence for Using "Parallelepiped" in a Non-Mathematical Utterence.

Well done, Jaeupnu Qix.

Anyway, I think the real problem in VR for the Masses is the difficulty in getting the displays in the headsets synchronized. A little off, and you get headaches and nausea.

It's kinda hard to make them en masse: I recall that the headsets used in the VR lab at my university are extremely expensive (and no, I don't recall the exact price.) The head of the lab was quite careful about them, let me tell you. ;-)
