Hi Carl!
Very nice animation with the arrows!
Yeah, thats what i meant with the roundings.
Hmmmm, that plane.....
I couldnt figure out what they did on the real model,
or how it looks real on theirs.
Its a plane, but in lightwave its called non-planar,
all points should share one axis, if not, its non-planar.
I could simply make triangles, but then the shading
wouldnt be right.
Maybe you got an idea?
EDIT:Found some shots where you can see the shading better.
Its 2 triangles
Look at the shadow:

I've seen some screen captures that show how I think they made this part which I need to dig up. In short I don't think they were consistent with this part throughout the film.

Would it be fair to say its a twisted plane on your model?
I see how that could be made to work but I don't think a twisted plane can easily be made with CSG and that tends to make me think something else was used in the film.

Well I see you've edited your post while I was replying.
You've certainly found a few of the pictures I was refering to above.
Notice how these two images are NOT consistent with each other. Lets call the first plane in the first image the plane defined by points 1,2,3. The second plane (or triangle) in this image is then formed by points 2,3,4. This doesn't agree with the second image where the 2 planes are formed with these sets 1,3,4 and 1,2,4.
Visually I like your solution better. What I did with this in my first attemt was to vary the radii of the spheres in such a way as to keep all 4 points in one plane but that has it's problems too.

Hi Carl!
Yea, editing the posts is evil
I noticed the shadow is running in different directions after sending the post.....
But i guess there are different models used in the movie
anyways, and both ways would work.
I think i found like 6 or 7 different versions in the film....
Maybe i should make a list with pictures.

Hi!
Ok, here is the list, please let me know if there is something wrong!
Version 1:
CLU Tank, normal version
Version 2:
CLU Tank, disc at turret cut off, different line-shading at counter weight
Version 3:
CLU Tank, disc at turret is back, different line-shading at counter weight like V2
Version 4:
MCP-tank, modelling error on the back side of the glowing part between body and tread
Version 5:
MCP-tank, turret shifted forward on the body, different line-shading at counter weight
Version 6:
MCP-tank, looks all different, i.e. treads looking round on the sides
Version 7:
Complete different version, maybe done by Triple-I?
Here is another picture, where you can see the triangles on the back:

Deadly Disks Wrote:I always felt the tanks rolling under the carrier in that scene were kept to minimal pollys due to the hardware limitations at the time.
I bet that one shot was VERY graphics intensive! |
On the other hand, there are some shots with the carrier
and much more around it, like together with the solar sailer,
which need quite a lot polygons.
And the carrier was done by Triple-I too. so for that shot
they had to make their own version of it.

I tend to think those low poly tanks were made by Triple-I too. However those aren't the only low poly tanks in the film. You forgot the low poly tanks the light cycles drive past after leaving the game grid. In that scene the low poly version I think is used to indicate inactive tanks and while the light cycles drive past them 2 of the low poly tanks "activate" and become the much more detailed model. In that scene I tend to think that was MAGI's work and without having a fame in front of me I think those low poly tanks looked much different then these low poly tanks.

Hmmm... it's not as different as I thought it was.

Just a theory to fit the facts (I don't think this was intentional on the part of the animators, it was just a matter of saving on the polygon budget to cut rendering times) . . .
I would guess that the simple versions of the tanks are when they're in power conservation mode, like wwwmwww stated. Then when they go into combat or pursuit, they "rezz-up" to full power and become more detailed. Just like Sark's Carrier, when he said to rezz-up the Carrier for pursuit mode.
Hmm, so Tron and Knight Rider have something else in common. Pursuit modes.
Yes, I know . . . I deserve the Todd pun prod for that.

Ah, i forgot about the other tanks which got activated.
They really look the same as the ones rolling under the carrier.

Agreed... The color is different and the ones under the carrier seem to be missing the big red dot but other then that the shape seems to be the same. In addition to that I've also noticed both have a nice round dome on the top. I'm not sure Triple-I could do that easily with their software as I believe everything had to be a mesh. I don't think they could manipulate normals the way people do with meshs today so either that's a very high poly sphereoid on top of a very low poly model or that is a CSG made by MAGI. I believe MAGI made a CSG carrier for atleast one shot and I'm now wondering which carrier is in that shot.
Interesting stuff... looks like I'll be pulling out my DVD again tonight.

Hi Carl!
Ive been watching the scene with the tanks and the carrier again, and the carrier there looks different too.
If you look at the front-section, it looks really smooth curved
and not faceted as the other ones.
If MAGI did a carrier too, it would make sense if these models
have been done by them.
There is a shot earlier, when Tron passes by very fast with
his Lightcycle, where this carrier appears too.
Its somewhere when Flynn flies the reco.
