Micro Tron arcade machine

on Thursday, November, 22, 2012 6:57 AM
I'd like to share a little project i've been working on for the past couple of weeks. It's a micro sized version of the Tron arcade machine that we've grown up playing. Ever since I was a kid I've been obsessed with miniaturization. Now that technology has advanced, my dreams of owning a Tron arcade machine have come true...at least in miniature form. I'll be posting regular updates as the project progresses.

Here are a couple of pics to get us started

Thank you it's very exciting creating this replica. I'm a Tron freak and wish this existed elsewhere but since a working scaled replica hasn't been made yet, I've opt'd to build one. If I'm successful the next will be Discs of Tron.

VERY cool indeed! Curios to see how it'll work. Will you produce and sell these, or is it just a one-off type thing??

I'm sure not a few (meaning many) people would want to own one

Thank you for the comments! I intended to make this a one-off project. However, I have been mindful to design it as a kit in case people took interest.

I'd love to help out my fellow programs with this fun machine. I have to figure how to make parts more efficiently, so it's not so expensive. Thoughts on these packages/prices?

Basic -$60 (cabinet unassembled bare plywood, decal sheets, precut vinyl, mounting hardware, and components list)

COBOL -$150 (same as basic w/ assembly and vinyl wrapping and decals applied)

Pascal -$250 (same as COBOL w/ lighting, opening coin door with dummy "coins" you can put into the chutes, joystick and base, basic shroud, wiring, electronics minus iPod touch gen 2)

User -$400 (same as COBOL as a full Turnkey model incl. premium shroud, opening coin door with dummy "coins" you can put into the chutes, iPod touch gen 2)

Prices would fluctuate based on how efficient I can make them but do these seem out of the question?

I think for something that is hand made and unique, those prices are quite fair.

I agree with Bandit. With the amount of time, skill and customization you would put into these, your prices are very reasonable.

Yes, reasonable. I'd be very interested in "Pascal", but what would be the difference between "Pascal" and "User" besides the Ipod Touch? In other words, what's the "same as COBOL as a full Turnkey model incl. premium shroud" option?

Or, more to the point. What would be the difference between "turnkey" and not, besides the Ipod?

(Yes, obviously I am interested as well!)

Very cool! Cant wait to see it completed!
I really like any arcade machines, I'm even building a full size arcade!

So how did you get the game on an iPod touch? I would think you had to jailbreak it?

Thanks for asking, Renderinfo. The difference is not only the iPod but the more detailed 3d printed shroud. The 3d prints will be arriving in about a week. I'll post pics once they arrive. So the price difference between pascal and user is added ipod and detailed shroud plus install. I'll likely offer each of the parts, individually, so everyone can add detail as they see fit. Hope that answers your questions

No jail breaking needed. I just got lucky and was able to get imame4all before it was pulled from apple's store. So if you have an iPod with imame4all, jail broken or not then let me know and I'll come up with a 5th price point

Nope, did not have an iPod back then. Can you still get that app by jail-breaking? I mean I wouldn't do that to my new iTouch 5g, but I would do it to an old 2, 3 or even a 4g. order abortion pill abortion pill buy online where to buy abortion pill

Thanks for the earlier reply, Falty...
The individual parts would be fine, but if that "5th price point" is everything "premium" including the turnkey assembly, only missing the iPod, that's the price point I'd be looking for. I'm reasonably sure I can get ahold of some Android media players that would be a similar form-factor, and have the same Tron emulation for cheaper than an old Ipod (maybe not), so that's what I was thinking when I asked the diff price point questions...

Can't wait to see the finished product, but from the posted pics, it looks great!

These pics are killing me!

Very high quality work. Go ahead and put me on the list of "want it", and I can paypal a deposit anytime... I'm still debating on with/without the iPod touch. I think I am going to research other possible media player options for the enclosure, and I'll share anything I find.

Update:
This site should have the imame4all software for all Android and iOS devices:
http://code.google.com/p/imame4all/
Will probably need some help locating the Tron Arcade proms/roms, but it should be very doable.

Quick search yielded these 3 Android based media players with varying display sizes:

Philips Go Gear 3.2" Around $60
Sony NWZ-Z1040 4" Around $100
Creative Zen Touch 2 3.2" around $100

Since these are all more or less the same going price for a 3.5" Ipod Touch Gen 2, your price of $150 extra for the kit including the Ipod Touch Gen 2 (fully loaded with IMame and Tron I am assuming) happens to be SUPER REASONABLE.

Even so, I hope you make a "fully assembled premium kit" with and without the IPod 2 as an option. Then I'll have a challenge
