My Scratch-Built TRON: Legacy Baton

on Thursday, October, 11, 2012 10:13 PM
Since I've been able to get a great Legacy costume and already Soulinertia modded a toy disc, the last thing I needed was a Baton to stick to the side of my leg!

The Spin Master version, while decent looking is WAY oversized.

So I went to Lowe's Home Improvement to look around for material to build one. Well, I never would have figured what I came across as I stumbled on a Flashlight that was designed almost the same as the Baton!

http://www.flarealertlighting.com/plastic-handheld-825The only color at Lowe's was the Blue casing but I got it anyway for a little over $10.

The flashlight is great. It's super bright if you use Lithium batteries in it. Plus it already has a built in magnet to the back of the casing so it is pretty much ready to stick to a metal plate on the leg. haha.
I then came up with a way to just make a sleeve for the flashlight that would mimic the look of the Baton.
Last night I started on it.
Materials I used were stuff I just had laying around the house, really. Some scrap illustration board, glue and hot glue.
After a lot of measuring and re-measuring, on the third iteration, I got a sizing that would work and then began all the cutting and gluing.
So far I have all the components pieced together and ready for primer, sanding and paint which will happen Friday and Saturday. I hope to have it finished by Saturday.

Here are some progress pics:

Using some construction paper I got a rough idea of the size and shape I needed for the sleeve

Test fit the first sleeve size...it was okay but I changed the measurements 2 more times to fit in the hand better.

Measuring out the panels on the illustration board to fold into the sleeve. (Note: not the final measurement sizes)

I couldn't get a good flat image of the center display panel so I free-handed my own based off of the panel on the Spin Master version

Made up some molds to make the endcaps using hotglue for the translucent lighting material, which took about 3 tries getting it right but they came out decent enough after I figured out how to make it work.
Here are all the components except for the display panel. I left it at work because I printed onto a transparency and just ended up leaving it there..doh! ahha

and 2/3 of the assembly to test the lighting

Tomorrow, I begin painting!

More progress!

The pieces all painted and ready for trial fitting

The display panel that I printed onto a transparency was still to transparent so I had to reinforce the black area with some opaque tape and cut out the hex holes so the light would shine through. So it now consists of Transparency (top), White Diffuser(middle) and Light blocker (bottom) stacked on each other. It worked well.

Closer look at the molded hotglue endcap that shall serve its purpose. Its not pretty on close inspection but I'm good with that.

Still have a little bit of painting to do on the center accents on each end since they are a contrasting flat color. So I'm thinking of painting them flat black to more match the screen used one.

Thanks again.
It really wasnt that bad making it. If you can fold paper and use a ruler pretty good that was the main skills I used.

Just about anything can be made out of paper these days it seems. I had a lot of fun with it and it came out better than I thought it would. So the appreciation of it is...well, appreciated! Haha

Yeah, I have had that disc for over a year now. I got the Soulinertia disc mod kit which makes it super easy to complete. The batteries were kinda wore out in that shot. When new one are in it's REALLY bright.

That's awesome!! I knew I couldn't be the only one who used hot glue to mold parts. X-) so you got that flashlight at Lowe's? That's genius! I don't even have the Spinmaster baton so I am going to try making this. Thanks for sharing! :-)abortion pills online abortion pill online purchase cytotec abortion

yes, the flashlight came from Lowe's but it wasn't in the same spot as the rest of the flashlights. It was down a random aisle in a cardboard dump bin. If you have trouble finding it let me know and I'll go to my Lowes and get the item number so that might help.

I'm trying to resist making one. It looks awesome.

Truth be told, I'm trying to resist just getting one of those flashlights. In part because I would definitely carry it attached to my thigh, and I don't want to A. have to explain it, heh, or B. figure out how to attach it (magnets in all my pants? lol. A tactical holster wouldn't do).where to buy abortion pill ordering abortion pills to be shipped to house buy abortion pill onlineabortion pills online http://www.kvicksundscupen.se/template/default.aspx?abortion-questions cytotec abortion
